While it is clear Dr. Hightower is very intelligent and knows the material very well, her teaching methods are far too blunt and forceful for her class to be enjoyable. She assigns lots of homework but rarely checks it, is always behind schedule, and often seems to forget that we have other classes that give us homework too. As people have said, you will learn English, but it won't look good on your transcript unless you're part of the top 5% of the class that actually get A's.
If you end up with Hightower, trust me, you will do well on your AP exam. However, if you manage to last that long in her class, you might lose a couple of limbs
i consider myself as someone able to handle large workloads well but seriously this class was a living hell. I couldnt focus on any other classes because my time was so consumed by her. Shes super smart but insane.
Too many projects with insane amounts of work needed. I'd pull in about 72 hours of total work for a single project and no one in the class would get better than a 92. There is no break ever? You go from one insanely time consuming project to the next, only with even less time to do it. We regularly would spend weeks working on projects half of us never presented in class. Everyone is afraid the entire 90 minute period.
Shes very knoledgable but her teaching strategies just dont work for me, or really any of the other people who were in my class. Shes not mean or a bad person, just seldom takes into consideration the pressure she put us under all the time with the numerous hours of hw and projects every night.
She was an excellent teacher, who helped me a lot with my writing. She really just needs to get over herself. Her arrogance is annoying. Also, she deflates grades. A maximum of 5 out of ~35 kids got A's. The AP grades she gives you are no reflection of your scores on the AP. She helped tremendously, and I thought the AP was ridiculously easy because of her. She assigns too much, and expects too much. She gets all of her materials from the Internet. She really cares about improving your skills.
Hightower has high expectations and doesn't care that her students have work in other classes as well. She's very disorganized (never sticks to the planner) and her projects are pointless. She also has an annoying habit of handing out rubrics the day the projects are due instead of the day they're assigned. However, I've learned a lot about writing in her class, and my skill have definitely improved. You might get a C or a D in her class, but you'll for sure pass the AP exam.
I agree with the person who said her projects were pointless because most of them definatley were. Her class was too hard, but she was able to realize when it was too tough and she gave a nice curve. She was really generous at the end of the year to make sure no one was failing, she gave a lot of easy points. It was a really helpful class.
Be prepared for lotssss of work! Even though her (tough!) grading is really frustrating, she will help you improve your writing.
some people may not like her because she is hard, but she is easily the best teacher in the english department.
She gives a lot of projects in a little time, but if she thinks you're trying, she wants to help you.
Prepares students for the AP exam really well. The class is lots of work, but your writing will improve.
I loved Dr. Hightower's class. She knows her stuff, and will explain it to you. Also, my writing became so much better. Awesome teacher...
Sure she waits till the last minute, but I learned more in my fresh. eng. class than in my soph. and senior years combined. Your writing improves dramatically.
A lot of writing, but it is helpful. Assigns a lot of pointless projects though. Very time consuming as far as the amount of work goes.
Oh, come on guys, she wasnt that bad. A little hard, but you do learn
Too hard and unclear, a lot of stuff and no time to do it in, she moves too fast
class was so hard; i didn't learn anything. too many projects; too little time
