Had Mrs. Shales for both Honors and AP Chem a few years ago. Was really sad that she retired, but she was the best teacher I've ever had! We love you, Mrs. Shales :)
Enjoyed this class. Its not easy, and Mrs. Shales doesn't explain much to AP class. Overall a good experience, though.
Extremely knowledgeable and caring about her students so much! She is my favorite teacher at Costa. Her class is not hard, especially given that she gives 50 extra credit points (bonus points) to everyone!
One of the best teachers at Costa. She REALLY cares. We love you Ms. Shales!! Chemistry is hard but she does a great job of teaching it.
She makes you care so much about chemistry! She is the best teacher I have ever had and somehow makes all of her students want to work hard just to make her happy. I absolutely LOVE it when she gets distracted and goes off on all her tangents. If you ever have her, ask her to read you something from her "Humor Me" file when you have extra time.
She was a hard teacher but I learned a lot. She wasn't necessarily the best teacher and i felt like she rushed many things, so she could keep up with the accelerated curriculum, so therefore some people fell behind.
LOVED her class. She cares so much about her students. Anyone who did not do well and blames her is lazy. You have to listen in class and try on all her assignments to do well. Loved her tangents
Knows her stuff, and will do everything in her power to make sure you know it too. She's a "no B.S" kind of teacher.
I finished my honors chem final today and all I can say is that shes a great teacher. She knows the subject well and is very helpful. But tests are very hard and require a lot of critical thinking.
A great teacher, but a stubborn person. Caters well to most high school students' needs.
Hard teacher, but prepares extremely well for the AP test.
What a passionate woman. She's very intelligent, knows what she's talking about. You better like Chemistry if you want to keep up. You'll enjoy the class if you work hard and pay attention!
A very opinionated person, but still a good sense of humor. She makes sure the subject is extremely clear to you before she moves on. If you pay attention and study, there's no reason to do badly.
HAHA! Everyone saying her class is impossible to do well in, I wouldn't consider myself THAT smart, I got a C in AP Euro, but I got an A in Shales-Clark. GREAT teacher, I learned so much.
Her classes are extremely difficult, but she is a fantastic teacher. If you work hard enough, you can get an A or a B easily, especially considering an A on the final = an A in the class.
if you try, and are present...you will do fine. she produces amazing ap and sat scores
VERY difficult class. My first B. Does a good job of weeding out the weak for AP Chem ;]. Sometimes she's really unclear because her mind works in a weird way. Use study groups to save your grade.
really good teacher and explains comprehensively. i like the accelerated pace and enthusiasm in the class
She's crazy in a really awesome way. Her tangents are usually really funny. In terms of the class, it's tough but you really learn your stuff, and if you know your stuff you'll get an A, she's really honest and really cool.
hard teacher, but really nice person. really cares about her students but is absent alot.
She has very poor attendance and tests on material she has not covered. If students do well on AP tests, it's from their expensive private tutoring, not because of her.
She is a very intelligent teacher who has an unusual passion for having her students excel in learning. I jumped into her AP class as a B student from CP Chem without meeting the math prerequisite. Needless to say the odds sounded strongly against me. Nonetheless, she prepared me exceedingly well, and I came out of that class with a love for chemistry and a 5 on the AP exam. And her BBQ is delish.
She is tough and demanding and that is exactly what a student in AP Chem needs. She is also dedicated and loves her students. She only wants them to excell!
A lot of people's complaints are legitimate; however, last year she had a 97% pass rate on one of the hardest AP tests there is (I got a 4, I wasn't in the 3%). I don't think many other teachers have that kind of AP success. Not sure her honors class adequately prepares you for her AP class; AP just seemed so much harder. Still, in the end its well worth it. Really nice lady too for the most part.
Her class gave me nightmares. She's really scary and goes really class. Has random rants where she usually gives too much information.
An agonizing class. The tests are only *sometimes* about what she teaches you, the notes are generally unhelpful. Impossible to do well, but you will learn a lot. Sort of.
Hates me bc i ask too many questions. If ur on her good side then Yay, if not (like me)...Good Luck
Really nice and cares about her students. Excruciatingly easy. Takes a really long time on each subject which may be a good or bad thing. we'll know in may
I liked the class! Hey, she helped me get a 4 on the AP test that is all that matters. She really does care about each student and wants them to succeed.
Tough class, but she teaches it better than anyone else and her lectures are pretty cool.
Class is impossible but at least she prepares you for the AP exams.
She gives you every opportunity to do well. How many other teachers give you their home phone number? It's your fault if you don't succeed. Shales rocks.
Er....she's a good human being, but her tests are very, very unevenly weighed. Multiple choice questions are just as much as the ones you have to show work on.
She's gone most of the year, her test are impossible. she knows what shes doing but she cant teach it. Nice person though
Eventhough she missed a lot of school last year, she was extremely helpful during her AP reviews this year, and she really knows what she is talking about.
Was definitely not a great teacher. So what if I only got a 3 on AP test. Got a pair of A's on report card, never would have happened with Bhare.
Her teaching is fantastic! Her tests do not reflect what we have learned.
can you say worst class ever. she was gone half the year, we never did anything except go over stuff we had done the year before. It was like march and we were still 'dusting off those cobwebs.' the only good part was that we never really did any work.
omg, words can not begin to describe how bad of a teacher she is. I had her for AP chem last year and the only reason i passed the AP chem test was Mr. Bhare. One could only wonder how she's still teaching with all the layoffs.
Wouldn't be so bad if the tests corresponded with what she teaches.
A lot of kids hate that they do badly on the tests she has-she'll teach you lots
she's tough and hard to listen to but you'll learn...something
