I had this guy during the 88-89 academic year. Tonight I was reminded of one of his funny comments and thought to Google him. Simply put, Dana Smith saved my (academic) life. He taught me how to study, how to think...how to learn. I owe Dana Smith a debt of gratitude. I hope everyone who has a chance to learn from him does so. Thank you, Mr. Smith. -- from the one they called Gonads
Smith is both the hardest and best teacher I've ever had. I am an '01 SJP grad and Smith's teaching and passion about his subject matter could rival any professor in both my undergrad and grad. It took my years to realize that Smith wasn't just arbitrarily hard, he just expected you to be as thoughtful and as diligent in completing his assignments as he was in creating them. His teaching will stick with you for a long time. Don't worry about your grade, just take his class and be better for it.
D. Smith is a very good but very hard teacher. He gives lectures and encourages students to think about what they are learning, rly knows his stuff. However, his tests are extremely hard and confusing. If you prepare well enough, A's are possible though. He also is fair, if you have questions about tests and whatnot often times he gives extra points just for you taking the time out to talk to him. Would recommend if you're willing to put work in. By far one of the best teachers I've ever had.
I prefer to learn real history than recite
NAUTICAL BUSINESS, BROTHER DOGS
In my opinion, everyone at St. John's should be forced to take his class. Every test you take after Smith's test will be a breeze. Best teacher I've ever had and a better student for it.
Smith is probably the hardest teacher I ever had, but the class is worth it. Great teacher, but not easy at all.
Class is difficult, but if you put the time and effort in, you are rewarded. Mr. Smith is one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. He values effort and hard work. One of the best ever.
I love this class, and Mr. Smith makes history fun. You have to study for tests, and work hard at essays, but if you put in the work the class can be a lot of fun.
Great teacher, very helpful if you're not on his bad side. Just do your work and you'll be fine.
He is NOT a horrible teacher, he is one of the best at St John's. Just because he's hard does not mean he's a bad teacher
His class is harder than an AP class, but he will teach you how to write, memorize terms exactly, and will make the rest of your school years much easier. More beneficial than AP history, and is also a pretty funny guy once you get to know him.
Best teacher ever. Intelligent. Interesting. Taught us more about the world in one semester than all other teachers combined. He should go on tour as a speaker. The country could use his insight.
I had him two years in a row and i have to say, depite the feelings of some people, he brings an intensity and ferocity to both World History for sophomores and Holocaust for juniors and seniors that is really unmatched at st. johns.
This guy is just awesome. His alternative teaching methods are good for actually learning some history and prepare you for other classes in later years.
this man is god himself. greatest teacher ive ever had; he has truly changed the way i look at the world. fantastic teacher.
Its amazing how people tend to like those who are cruel and unruly. I saw Smith really chew into a kid and the others in the class seemed to enjoy it, history repeats itself-proof
Fire and Ice: SO funny but its hard to know when he'll get mad. MerCANtilism! I hated history until I had D Smith. He gets you to THINK!! ANALYZE history!
One of my favorite teachers. If you are willing to put in the work, you will get so much out of his class. You will thank him by the time you graduate.
Watch out. Hardest class ever. If you can pull off all the essay work and memorization, though, he's a very cool guy.
great guy, but watch out. guy will rip your head off, trust me from experience. you will learn more form thatn most college classes.
If you work for him, he will respect you, and you will do well. Holocaust class is the BEST. DO NOT get on his bad side. Great Guy. You will thank him later.
"Screw." If school was easy, you wouldn't learn anything. Keep that in mind when you take his class. He is a great man.
Take his Holocaust class, trust me. He's real cool and funny with the Holocaust classes.
Mr. Smith inspired me to be a teacher. Your Prep experience is not complete without at least one of his classes.
A great guy outside of class, but his grading is screwed up, and work intensive, STAY AWAY FROM IT
I like the guy and is a cool guy to talk to outside of class, knows how to kid around, but don't get on his bad side
He is a great guy to ahve a discussion with and just to have a class with. His views are not the most balanced, politically speaking, but i like him anyway
