I had this guy during the 88-89 academic year. Tonight I was reminded of one of his funny comments and thought to Google him. Simply put, Dana Smith saved my (academic) life. He taught me how to study, how to think...how to learn. I owe Dana Smith a debt of gratitude. I hope everyone who has a chance to learn from him does so. Thank you, Mr. Smith. -- from the one they called Gonads

Smith is both the hardest and best teacher I've ever had. I am an '01 SJP grad and Smith's teaching and passion about his subject matter could rival any professor in both my undergrad and grad. It took my years to realize that Smith wasn't just arbitrarily hard, he just expected you to be as thoughtful and as diligent in completing his assignments as he was in creating them. His teaching will stick with you for a long time. Don't worry about your grade, just take his class and be better for it.

D. Smith is a very good but very hard teacher. He gives lectures and encourages students to think about what they are learning, rly knows his stuff. However, his tests are extremely hard and confusing. If you prepare well enough, A's are possible though. He also is fair, if you have questions about tests and whatnot often times he gives extra points just for you taking the time out to talk to him. Would recommend if you're willing to put work in. By far one of the best teachers I've ever had.

In my opinion, everyone at St. John's should be forced to take his class. Every test you take after Smith's test will be a breeze. Best teacher I've ever had and a better student for it.

I love this class, and Mr. Smith makes history fun. You have to study for tests, and work hard at essays, but if you put in the work the class can be a lot of fun.

He is NOT a horrible teacher, he is one of the best at St John's. Just because he's hard does not mean he's a bad teacher

His class is harder than an AP class, but he will teach you how to write, memorize terms exactly, and will make the rest of your school years much easier. More beneficial than AP history, and is also a pretty funny guy once you get to know him.

Best teacher ever. Intelligent. Interesting. Taught us more about the world in one semester than all other teachers combined. He should go on tour as a speaker. The country could use his insight.

I had him two years in a row and i have to say, depite the feelings of some people, he brings an intensity and ferocity to both World History for sophomores and Holocaust for juniors and seniors that is really unmatched at st. johns.

Its amazing how people tend to like those who are cruel and unruly. I saw Smith really chew into a kid and the others in the class seemed to enjoy it, history repeats itself-proof
