He knows a lot and explains stuff if you ask him. He's also really lenient and nice. The class was basically run by the textbook, so in class lectures don't really help you for the tests (they aren't as specific as the content in the textbook). I had him for human anatomy, and getting an A isn't too difficult.
I had Ivie in his last year of teaching. He's one of the most passionate teachers in the school, with a plethora of knowledge about any type of biology, and a whole lot of teaching experience. Though his teaching style is relatively passive and his tests can be insane, his classes have been enjoyable and extremely informative, and he's always willing to help you out despite his cranky persona. He's also one of the funniest teachers I've ever had, and I've loved his class throughout the year.
Mr. Ivie is a fantastic teacher who will be missed once he officially retires after this year. His teaching style is very sarcastic and unforgiving, but he combines that with extremely high subject knowledge and is a genuinely great teacher. I know his jokes, "roasts," and often overwhelming tests will be missed. I've never met a teacher more thoroughly dedicated to the subject they teach, and Ivie's passion for biology is clear. He will be sorely missed, and I really enjoyed having him.
I had him for both AP Bio and Human Anatomy. Some of the best classes ever! Unfortunately, he is retiring after this year. His AP Bio class was pretty hard with every detailed and difficult tests but if you have had him for AP Bio, Anatomy will be a piece of cake.
Mr. Ivie has probably created more physicians, dentists, and various healthcare-bound people in all of the Beaverton school district. My class alone created 9 physicians, and countless other Allied Health professionals. The one thing we have in common is we all had Mr. Ivie as our AP Biology teacher. Obviously association isn't causation, but he definitely played a role in our decision to pursue our careers. He deserves all the respect in the world, even if he plays cranky old man.
AP Bio is ridiculously hard. But Mr Ivie makes it so much better ! He is very funny, and has a passion for teaching..And he really helps when you go up to him. Overall, I would be very happy if I got him again, but I am definitely not taking AP Bio again..
really cranky guy but super funny when he makes fun of kids that slack off. I have him for anatomy and its a very difficult class but he's super clear on what we need to know for the test. ALSO he may seem strict at first but he will always help you get your grade up and make things easier on you if you just ask for help. If you sit back and complain, he'll make fun of you but if you advocate for yourself then he will really help you out.
Nice teacher, pretty helpful, rounds up your grade. Not the most hardworking. Pretty much gives crazy hard multiple choice questions and doesn't prepare you, but your grade will be fine because of the reading guides (free credit) and the labs. Do your work and read the chapters and you'll be fine. If I were you I would try to learn some basic bio concepts before school starts- watch some Khan Academy videos or check out the textbook or something- the class is pretty fast paced.
If he's retiring soon, it shows. It sounds like he did have a teaching passion before though.
Funny and knowledgeable, makes his class enjoyable despite its ridiculous difficulty.
Awesome guy, extremely patient, and loves to do what he can for you. However, he does lack on teaching skills, as you have to rely heavily on the textbook to get through his AP Bio class.
Mr. Ivie is a great guy however his tests are ridiculously hard and dosen't reflect the AP TEST at ALL! The AP Test has easy MC HARD FRQ! Mr. Ivie has HARD MC NO FRQ!!! Doesn't really help
Born during the ice age, Mr. Ivie is a teacher who needs to retire.
Aside from ridiculously hard tests he's an excellent teacher. He's self-described as "blunt," which makes him really humorous. A really nice guy. I don't think you'll get another AP Bio teacher as good as he is.
He is a kind-hearted teacher and grandpa.
He's a grouchy old man. And he's a great teacher and fcking hilarious. All the humor helps you remember stuff.
Fun guy. He is very knowledgeable, but doesn't exactly teach. His skill in keeping bio successful is keeping the class on track and making thorough reading of the chapters (which suck) necessary due to test difficulty. This makes his class a challenging struggle, and as a result an immensely valuable investment. You will learn so much by the end of the year and feel so accomplished for almost completely reading such a big book! Plus he's such a fun (kinda grouchy in a good way) guy to be around.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!
I have him for both human anatomy and AP biology and he is the best teacher ever. He is hilarious and very helpful. He obviously knows the material probably to the extent that he could explain the entire book without looking at it. All in all he is the best teacher.
Performance in his class is absolutely dependent on keeping up with assigned reading, natural given the large amounts of material he needs to cover. In-class lectures mostly amount to an overview of the reading, useless on his exams due to the level of detail necessary. Pretty sure he enjoys just acting like a grouchy old man, but it's an open secret that he's just a teddy bear underneath. That said, he has a very low tolerance for cheating, and if you're lazy in his class count on being mocked.
To be honest, he really sucks at teaching. He just give us worksheets for 90% of the course. He is funny because he completely looks down upon stupid kids haha.
Ridiculously good teacher
Not the best of teachers, but an extremely funny guy. Makes AP Bio fun.
I have this year and man he's great! He makes AP Bio so much funnn :) He pretends to be all intimidating but he's a total softy underneath it all. By far the best teacher guys!
He's a great teacher, but his class if hard as @#$@#
Mr. Ivie's anatomy and physiology class was very difficult, but nonetheless very helpful. I learned a lot, and though it took a lot of hard work from myself, I would not have done without him. He is a good teacher and you will gain a lot from the class if you choose to apply yourself.
He's a nice teacher, he's usually pretty laid back, and he knows a lot about natural sciences. Some people have a hard time in his bio classes, but they're really pretty easy if you do the assigned work.
I really appreciated how helpful, understanding and lenient Mr.Ivie is with students who struggle in his classes. Speaking from personal experience, he worked with me until it was assured that I was not going to fail (as much as I was struggling) and ended passing with a 'B'. (:
Mr. Ivie is by far my favorite teacher at Westview. His material is challenging, but he understands that its high school as well. If you're willing to go up and talk to him, he WILL always listen. And don't be intimitaded! He's really a big softy underneath it. He'll respect you and reward you for working hard, even if you're not the smartest in your class. And he's a teacher you want to respect you. He's just that cool folks.
Ivie is truth be told one of the best teachers at Westview, period. His tests are insanely hard but his 5-A rule makes up for it. His tests prepare you super well for the AP test so once you get a 5 your in class grade will be bumped up to an A. He may be old but he's knowledgeable and likes to help you learn. Don't slack off and always pay attention, he could care less if you don't care but he'll respect you more if you do care.
He is so epicly awesome that I would truck his bass any day of the week. even though his class is a litch, it's funnyz0rz, and I hear he prepares you for the ap exam really well.
Ivie is a nice, funny and a great teacher. His lectures are cojent, and make the subject much easier to understand. People like to the exaggerate about the difficulty of the exams; they really aren't all that difficult. He also likes to club seals
Mr.Ivie is an awesome teacher. He's really helpful and hillarious, if you get to know him.
awesome teacher does sometimes scare people. like to laugh and have fun just class is hella hard :(
Good guy, hard class, good teacher. Not much else to say.
Easily the best science teacher at Westview. Even though the AP material is not anything like college Biology, he does prepare students well for the exam (but not college). Excellent teacher.
Best teacher easily. It's a hard class but that's because the subject is hard itself. Very helpful and clear.
great science teacher. although his class is really hard it's not really his fault and not something i would hold against him. he's just teaching from a very hard subject to learn and it's hard so that you can pass the AP exam. he basically runs his class so that everyone can have the potential to get a 5 of the AP exam. he appreciates hard work. even if you aren't doing well, he knows you are trying and doesn't let that go unnoticed. very helpful.
BEST. TEACHER. EVER. His AP Bio tests are challenging but make you extremely prepared for the AP exam (which seems like chocolate cake after his tests). Hilarious, knowledgeable, and gives good lectures. I had so much fun in his class and learned tons.
Ivie is tight. He tries to show no sympathy but we all know he cares, and thats hard to do. Almost knows too much, but I like smart teachers.
If you go to Westview and don't have Ivie, your time there was wasted.
i have Ivie for anatomy next year! i just had him for ap bio. i cant wait!
I was in his AP Bio class. His tests were extremely difficult but it prepared me well for the AP exam -- I got a 5 with minimal studying (even though I failed most of Ivie's tests). If you get a 5, you automatically get an A in that class, so don't stress out if you're failing the tests right now. Overall he is difficult but a good and fair teacher with a good sense of humor.
IV i gotta hand it to you, you are great. you can tell that he cares about you. i have him for AP Bio and he knows that ive never failed a test. ive failed every single one of his though but like only 5% off of a C. but it really is a shock. he really tries to help you and he really isnt intimidating. i really appreciate the lengths that he goes for not just me but all his students.
Ivie is awesome, he's so great at teaching and helping his students understand. yeah, AP Bio tests are a real pain in the neck, but he preps you so well for the AP exam it's impossible to not pass.
He was the coolest EVER for AT.....he already likes me alot. So I am sooooo looking forward to having him for AP Bio. He also let me leave school early more than a few times.....awesome
Probably one of Westview's greatest teachers. He give you a hard time if you slack off, but he's pulling for your grade. Especially in Anatomy, he'll give like 30-40 points extra credit right before the final. Ivie's a funny man. He's definitely not easy though.
One of the coolest, most sarcastic teachers in WHS. He's a really great guy, but his AP Bio tests are impossibly evil. Even after the curve I consistently got C's, and I studied for his tests for hours. I'm used to getting high A's without any studying, so it was a blow to my GPA and ego. He doesn't prepare you for the tests (goes too fast), but he's such an awesome guy that it makes up for it. He'd be ideal for Advisory or AT. No grades. Must've done something right though because I got a 5 on the AP exam.
Mr. Ivie > All. He's seriously one of the best teachers at Westview, and he's a great guy.
Mr. Ivie rox man, hes the best ever. His tests are killer, but I know it'll help me prepare for college in the long run.
Very har, but none the less one of my favorite teachers. He is more then willing to meet the students half way on many things. His tests are really hard. don't fall behind
Good teacher. teaches things that are needed for the test. His tests are harder than the state test in preperation. Just don't be late and know what you need to and have a goodtime
Ivie is the coolest teacher at Westview. He is funny and really knows what he's talking about, and he cares about all his students, not just the jocks.
Mr. Ivie is the best teacher I've had so far at Westview- he's hilarious, incredibly friendly, helpful, approachable, and his AP Bio class was so rewarding.
He's cool and funny, but AP Biology is really hard and fast and dense if you're a sophmore coming right out of Chemistry... He's good about answering questions.
Ivie is so rad! I love this guy! Take all his classes!
Mr ivie is an AWESOME teacher who knows what he is doing!
mr. ivie is awesome. If you are at the end of his jokes, its for a reason! hes awesome.
Great teacher!! Makes the subjects very understandable..definatly one of the greatest teachers i've had and one of the best at WHS
he's pretty cool but i'm taking ap bio in his class and it's hard!
Haha....Ivey's great, Nick Sparr really wants an A in anatomy this year...
Ivie rocks! Anatomy is hard but at least he makes it interesting.
Mr. Ivie is the coolest teacher ever. I can talk to him about anything!!
Good teacher, really funny. Can be hard, but is also easy-going. Anatomy is a great class to take - if you can memorize!
Mr. Ivie is an awesome teacher, really funny... whoever said he's rude obviously has a lame sense of humor
I loved him! I looked forward to coming to Anatomy! Now that I am in college with my science teacher, I really miss Mr. Ivie!
Funny, Awesome, Cool. Loved his anatomy class, learned a lot.
Great guy, funny in a hey your in high school you can take it sort of way. But best of all he KNOWS what he's talking about!
He knows what he's teaching and makes it as interesting as he possibly can! If you aren't interested in the human body, and are in Anatomy, don't blame Ivee!:)
Doesn't really teach anatomy. If you are at the end of his jokes, be aware- he's rude.
The only reason not to like Mr Ivie is if you shouldn't be in his class. If you can't handle the class, don't take it out on him
