During our orientation, the students made him out to be horrible. I did not think so when I first met the man. I truly enjoyed his class, the first three of them at least. Soon, after many misunderstandings and poorly graded essays (which had not been taught to us) as well as some strange behavior, I came to my conclusion. I do not like this class. You can only consider asking a question if it is a medical emergency, other than that it's "on google classroom."

His personality is enjoyable. He tries to implement humour in his teachings and encourages students to teach themselves. He is quite knowledgeable and tries to correct students by showing their errors, leaving it up to the students to figure out what went wrong. Everything he does is intentional.

Mr. Woods is a literature "teacher" at International Academy. At the beginning of most classes he says we have a lot do, but not much actually gets done. He's on his laptop 95% of the time, gives 10 minute breaks and unintentionally provides students with a great opportunity to do other hw. The result of his lack of teaching is low essay scores, since we are expected to use things we never learned. Common phrases include "refer to your notes" (which were never taken) and "ha ha ha"

I believe I speak on behalf of a large majority of my peers when I say Darrin Woods is one of the most frustrating teachers I have encountered. When I write my essays he expects me to achieve things he has never taught. When I do satisfy those needs, he always finds something else wrong with my paper.

Mr. Woods is not a good teacher. Though he is funny (at least, he tries to be) his method of teaching is nonexistent. When he tells students to peer edit each other, but nobody knows what's going on, nothing gets done. He does a great job of not explaining and then expecting students to learn from others that have been left in the dark. He also takes a few months to grade a paper, which is much too long. One thing his class is good for is doing other homework in. He just Facebooks during class.

he did not answer questions and was snarky. Was often unclear with directions and lacked proper spelling skills. He also included a "ask three before me" policy which in later turned into "ask the whole class before me and I might answer your question"

Everybody knows at this point that Mr. Woods is very sarcastic and humorous pretty much all of the time, but not everybody benefits from it. Personally, I find his lessons entertaining and interesting. There are not many ways to make English something that I look forward to, but he has found a way! Mr. Woods tries to have his students answer their own questions to show them that they do understand if they put in the effort.

He is honestly the worst teacher at IA Central. He does not how to teach. When you ask him a question, he answers with a joke or does not answer at all. He is unhelpful and has weird grading policies. He chooses favorites and has no idea how to teach

Umm lol? Darrin can be somewhat confusing when he talks about things and makes all his jokes, but if you try to work with him and the material it's all good!
Really, seriously?

His class is not super hard. However, he lacks proper explanation about everything. Unlike most teacher's you can't even ask him a question about any work; on the rare occasions that he answers, he talks in circles which is more confusing then helpful. I will give him that he can be witty about his jokes and relate everything to them. I just wish he would be more helpful and clear though; I can't understand any of the mumbo jumbo he is supposed to be teaching.

He taught me nothing about lit. He's funny (if you can follow his humor, which requires understanding of the references and wordplay), but he simply does not teach.

Cool dude. He's funny and highly intelligent. His humor doesn't appeal to most kids because it takes a little getting used to. I have "low humor" but his form of humor is extremely witty, and he just references things that us kids don't always understand. He's a great teacher too and once you get used to his style you learn to develop critical thinking and independence.

Lit has always been my favorite subject, but this year with Woods I HATE the class. Woods is pompous and long-winded, and he thinks he’s hilarious but only rarely manages to amuse. He is so confusing—I learned long ago not to ask him questions because he talks in circles. “The way you do it is the way you do it.” OK, what?? His expectations are unclear and his ‘grading’ consists of underlining things and taking points off without much of an explanation! Haven’t learned a single thing from him.

I used to dislike him. But now that I have him as a senior, he's not so bad. It's still really frustrating when I ask a question and he doesn't give me an answer though... and just makes a joke about it. But he tries a lot more to help the seniors (which i guess isn't really a good thing after all) but he's a nice guy.

He's sometimes funny, but he tries too hard. Assigns too much work, never grades it, and is often unclear. Far too strict with food, drinks, tardiness, talking, gum, etc. Classroom run like a police state.

Great teacher, you'll get a good grade if you work hard...or if you talk a lot in his class and you become one of his favorites. However he's sometimes lazy and sometimes confusing but after a few months you'll get the hang of what he's actually trying to tell you (aka not all in words...). I quote, "The way you do it is the way you do it."

As a person he is... sometimes amusing, forgiving, yet impersonal, arrogant, vague...
As a teacher he... has weird grading policies, can be nice out of nowhere, can be ridiculously demanding out of nowhere, prepares you well for IB, moves quickly, etc
When it comes down to it, you probably won't be happy with the grade you receive in his class. But you will master IB English.

Taking his class at the time seemed like torture. I thought it was so hard! And then I went to college... Believe me when I say that his class will not only help you, but is a fundamental necessity if you want to have an edge on others in advanced college writing. Heed his advice, read, THINK, and do your best. The skills you develop in Mr. Wood's IB classes are invaluable.

I agree with the other people that Mr. Woods knows what he's doing, but I really don't like his sarcastic attitude towards many subjects and many students. I'm not an expert or anything, but as a student, I think he needs to try to make his class a little more interesting--he often speaks in a really flat and low monotone that just makes someone zone out in seconds. I just wish that we could do more fun stuff in his class that will actually make us want to learn.

Mr. Woods is just one of those teachers who make you work for it. You may not like him while you have him but you're really gonna appreciate him the next year or when you know how to use TED and no one else in your grade does. I'm so prepared for all my essays now because of him. He knows his stuff. He's also pretty funny and keeps class entertaining.

I don't think that all of these negative reviews of Mr. Woods are fair. Just because he actually makes his students work and learn English all of a sudden makes him a bad teacher?! He is a brilliant man and really knows the subject that he's teaching. With him as my English teacher, I'd learned a very great deal about writing and structuring essays. True, his class may seem difficult (and it is, at times), but it's all for the better and really helps in preparing us. And his humor is very subtle and witty.

YES he is a HARD teacher, but if you meet with him and ask him for help he is soo nice and helpful. When I first met Mr. Woods i was soo scared of him, but once you get to know him he is great. I learnt sooo much in his class and he is soo funny. He gives a lot of work, but it has a purpose!!! If you work hard and pay attention you will be fine and ask questions. book discussions are fun and helpful
