Ms. Vollaro gets too much crap thrown at her. Yes, I do find she is a harsh grader. But there is no real reason to outright dislike her. She teaches fantastically, and if one follows her direction in class, the material being taught is surprisingly easy. Plus, the tests are no different from classwork/homework problems. If one is doing poorly, they are not studying enough or correctly. They're that straight-forward.
It's immature to make our teachers' lives miserable when we don't get our way.
Ms. Vollaro has almost no personality when teaching; she is very stoic. Her exams are not particularly difficult and very similar to classwork and homework but she penalizes students very heavily for very small mistakes. Where another teacher would take off 2 points, Ms. Vollaro takes off 10. This causes class averages on exams to be low.
I think her point allocation on her tests are ridiculous...sometimes two questions are worth like over 50 points! That means if you happen to not study those two specific questions, you'll fail (and the rest of the 20 questions are worth less than 50 pts)! She barely gives ANY partial credit. I think she's simply too hard on her students. I've gotten mid 80s to mid 90s consistently in Wong, Avigdor, & Jumash here at Stuy and in her class my test average is like a low 70.
Vollaro ruined math for me 11 years ago. I always find myself wondering how I developed a fear of math (which I excelled in previously) and my analysis leads me back to Vollaro. She is strict and unaccommodating to the learning styles of different children. As a near-sighted student, she wouldn't let me change my seat to take notes. I fell behind and she wouldn't explain the Qs I got wrong. I hope this feedback helps her and others reconsider their teaching styles to meet the needs of students.
Ms. Vollaro definitely has a reputation for being strict and intimidating towards her students, but it certainly garners her a lot of respect, in a way. She is a no-nonsense teacher, but that prevents her students from getting distracted in her class, and promotes focus. She is extremely neat and organized, and if you take rigorous notes and practice, you should have no problem doing well on her tests, since they really are just an application of what you learn in class.
Most people are afraid of Vollaro or thinks she's extremely strict and unfair, but I enjoyed her class. The tests aren't hard, especially if you studied days before and pay attention in class. I had her for PreCalculus and it really wasn't very hard to get a good grade. If you improve throughout the term, your grade will be a bit higher than your test average. She's very fair and a good teacher.
She's probably the most inspirational math teacher I've ever had. She's completely logical in her approach to teaching as well as her approach to making tests. I find math class with her to be pack filled with information, color coded on the board, as well as in my notes, to be 100% understandable. I have never walked away from her class without understanding the lesson that day. The only "down-side" to having her is that she expects you to work hard, which isn't much of a down side at all.
She may be quite mean and strict, but she is an excellent and extremely clear teacher. Just make sure to study hard and you'll do fine, especially with the great notes that she gives.
i have to say, i wasn't sure about great books at first, since i knew the papers and readings were at a very high level. but she made all the difference, and is the reason i'm a famous author now.
She teaches but very quickly. Will tell you a lot of it is review from trig and then refuse to elaborate on the topic further. If you ask questions she tends to get annoyed and if you show a lack of u
pretty good teacher but overly mean and too hard. That being said, you will have to study very hard in order to do well in the class.
She's quite awesome unless you're a sucky student. If you work hard, she's extremely nice to you and even laughs instead of insults your mistakes.
You probably want to transfer out when you see her on your program card, you should transfer out if you don't care for math. But if you really want to excel, she's the teacher to have. She's a hard as
rushes through stuff, gives hw problems that none of the kids in BC could even do. Horribly mean, a horrible ****. everyone wants her to ****
terrible. should get fired she is the worst teacher in all of stuyvesant hs and I doubt that anybody who had her likes her
Not very nice. I don't despise her; it's more dislike. Not too helpful and can be nasty; she doesn't really want to review materials that she feels should have been covered before her class. Comes
Amazing teacher. Very nice, if not the nicest teacher in the whole school. Very easy tests which I was able to get easy 90 's without having to study much. Honestly, I really don't understand why peo
she wasn't too bad. mad scary and will fail you but if she's that you're improving shell give you a good grade. For example my grade were like 50's then 70's then 90's. and she gave me a 92 in the end
She's not bad at teaching or anything, but I hated her class even though I did well. She made a mistake on the final, but I don't think she give us back the pts we deserved. Plus, she hates calculus
transfer. if youre not SUPER good at math, you won't do as well as you think you will. honestly, she's not bad, but scary and her tests are freaking hard, esp if youre a bad test taker (like me)
she isn't nice. her tests are hard. average hw. organized. prepared u for final. want to learn? she's good. looking for good grades and easy class? not her.
I've had her for about 2 weeks thus far, and shes really not all that bad, she doesn't pick on you if your struggling, and certainly challenges you, she's very organized and disciplined, and never lat
She is a really tough teacher but the way she teaches forces you to learn. I did learn a lot but she is extremely hard. Study for her tests and know how to do everything you went over. Always put work
In the beginning I thought she was really hard. But if you study your NOTES and do your homework, you should do fine. Her notes are very clear, and you learn a lot from this class.
Best math teacher thus far. Clear handwriting, knowledge of material, and fair tests (you should do well if you study. if you don't...well...don't expect a good grade) AND she gives us pencils for chr
She's a good teacher. Her notes are super-neat but her exams are very hard. My tests ruined my average but I learned a lot in her class.
She's really scary. This whole term, I've only spoken ONCE to her when she called on me. Her tests are really long and doesn't care if you don't finish. She will answer your questions with the answer
Her tests are HARD, but she refuses to curve them. She has no soul and will yell at you for talking, asking questions or crying.
ok so she does teach but when u on't understand, you are too scared to ask a question and if u do, she'll say your wasting time, etc...also, her tests are long and hard
not good - she gives the hardest tests, goes much faster than other classes, and is waay strict. she yells at you for asking questions or basically for anything. but u learn some math i guess =\
In the beginning of the semester she always hands out a sheet that tells you to ask questions whenever you have any. Don't. She will make you feel ashamed for having any questions in the first place.
good teacher, but she is by far the hardest math teacher I have ever had.
Extremely clear, very efficient, every class is precise and formulaic. She is extremely cold and lacks compassion; harsh and has very hard tests. Her class is dead silent and icy. Clear, but TOUGH.
She needs to learn that it's not fair to grade students much more strictly than other teachers. She's smart, but lacks compassion which scares students into doing badly. It's not how you teach kids.
I have her and its a pity that I met her as a teacher and not as an adult who is probably one of the most interesting and creative people I have met. She is efficient but terrifyingly strict
her tests are crazy hard. she might seem evil for a while, but it turns out she has a heart. Her toughness kind of inspired me to learn more in math then ever.
I think that as you get used to her teaching style, you'll learn to make less mistakes, but I think it's also important to be an approachable teacher.
Straightforward teacher. Her notes are neat and tell you all you need to know. Despite her cold personality, you'll learn a lot and her tests aren't hard. Pay attention and you'll get a 88
She will not take pity on anyone and acts coldly toward students in class. At the very least she teaches well. -shrug- Go over your homework and class problems before a test and you'll do fine.
Vollaro, if you a reading this, I have a few suggestions for you. Try to be more concernced about student's progress, be more approachable, and actually (pretend) that you like being a teacher. It re
shes rude and she just hates all students and when other teachers come in she so fake and nice to them. tests are hard, hard grader, but good notes. not really approchable when u need help
She is a good teacher. However, she is just plain mean and will take off points for the dumbest reasons. Perfectionist and will call ppl rude for the slightest things. Always irritated. -_-
rude. heartless. really hard, esp. if you're not SUPER good at math. her tests are hard, and the key is to not freak out. teaches everything you need, but doesn't explain ANYTHING.
Has a bad rep, but was one of the best math teachers I had. Her lessons are extremely clear and makes sure you KNOW and not simply regurgitate the material she teaches. Just don't get on her bad side.
her tests are really hard and they are a major part of your grade. however, I have to admit that I learned more math in her class than I did in any of my other math classes combined.
i learned nothing from this woman. she made me hate math for one whole semester. her class was boring and her lessons were disconnected and unappealing. math haters will hate math more.
I liked her but had to get a tutor for her class because the material was difficult. However i felt i learned a good amt. from her as well
she is a good teacher but you really have to study so hard for her tests and if you're just bad at math...it doesn't really help
seems unfriendly but she gave us candy on valentines day and little pi buttons on pi day... also her class is basically her writing on the board and reading it back to us, no spontaneity whatsoever
I learned a lot. She is a good /teacher/, but a bad person. If you're mediocre in math, expect mediocre grades. She won't curve or pity you.
Very difficult - Hard tests, and refuses to go over problems when you don't understand. Tough grader. Expect pink gel pen smileys on your sixty grades. If you're not a genius, don't take her class. Organized, though.
SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER!! she made mq3 easy for me because of her organized notes. as long as you do well on the tests, youre fine
i think we've heard enough about her rather reserved personality and stuff... BUT her handwriting is perfect, her class is always organized, and she kinda runs things like...a machine. it's good, cause math needs organization
She's pretty boring. She went to laguardia high school , and can draw extremley perfect circles. A girl was crying and she screamed at her. Her tests aren't that hard. She is a good teacher though.
I remember on the day before Christmas break, smiled and chuckled (it was that strange chuckle) at people's jokes, and acted human. If she acted like that everyday her class wouldn't be as bad.
She seems souless but an amazing thing happened SHE SMILED. she's a good teacher you learn a lot from her, but keep up with her fast pace and learn to write really fast, only then can u finish her hard tests!
Although she's basically souless, Vollaro will teach you a lot. She's a great teacher academically, but she's a hard grader. Gives great notes to study from, but she goes too fast.
She once said during class, "You really don't want to prolong the agony of a geometric proof." Can you believe that a geomotry teacher would say something like that?
I think she's a good teacher, I understand everything in her class and her tests are fair and everything. But she has the personality of a tree. She never laughs or smiles.
Mrs. Vollaro doesn't have a soul. She walks around the classrom like she is a vulture. I have never seen her smile.
you know...i never thought she was evil, but just extremely strict and tense about everything. she has the potential of becoming a cool teacher; but she's just too harsh right now.
Vollaro is pretty cool if you follow directions, participate, and study study study... I managed to survive by doing her extra credit assignments, which weren't impossible.
seems mean to most people, but shes really a great teacher, just do all hwk n STUDY for tests cuz theyre hard
Very kind/generous teacher. teachers a lot and makes us want to go to her class. b sure to do all HW + study for tests to get a great final average teaching makes final exam easy.
a bit monotonous, but good teacher all the same. very clear and organized. doesn't force you to participate, tests are reasonable.
the class is total silence, she is a very great teacher but can appear to be intimidating and unaccesable for help, but is not...very easy tests
Her reputation is worse than she really is. Comes off mean, rumor has it because she went to Bronx Science. Academically a very good teacher but can be a mean person. Read the text
Shes the hardst teacher you will find. IF YOU HAVE HER, TRANSFER NOW!!!!! B4 you fail a class that might have at one point been your favorite!!!
Very good teacher, learned a lot from her. Tests are easy.
a good teacher who has mood swings and can be intimidating. formerly fishman. the class was a bit too quiet.
her tests are super-hard.. but shes also one of the best math teachers ive ever had. shes also not a bad grader
Just a mean person who shouldn't be allowed near children. She is evil and she hates us. I think she knows the stuff, but she just hates us so much.............
really, really, really, really, really, really hard tests... juz scary, hard, and mean teacher
Very good teacher, though a bit cold. Never be late to class. Hard tests. Grades reflect tests results.
her are VERY helpful when u are taking the final exams... also if u participate a lot, she will grow to favor u even tho u have low test grades...
taught REALLY well and controlled the class well...although i had to work super hard, it was worth it
Yes, she's one of the harder teachers, but I have to admit: I learned a lot from her last term! I didn't realize this until this term.
Just a horrible person. Shouldn't be allowed near kids. Refuses to answer questions, or tolerate anything. Walk in 2 seconds late, she'll demand a pass.
