Doug has solidified himself among the ranks of legends. Students will talk of Smes in the same vain as I imagine Luke Skywalker would talk of Yoda. A sage, compassionate mentor, and friend to countless students. I had the honor of knowing Doug as a student before his diagnosis, a mentor to help me get back on my feet in the months before his diagnosis, and a friend while the "knights" group came to be. It's a pity future generations won't know what I mean.
He was the man who made me see my life as something worth living. Rest easy smes, I'll see you on the other side.
I was supposed to have Mr. Smestad this year... But I got a letter saying he was in a battle with cancer. My brother had him and said the best things about him. He looked very healthy last year and I hoped that he would've stayed with us. When I heard about his passing, I broke down. I never met you fully but it has been a dream to. You are the Knight I want to be. Rest Easy to the new Angel God has made.
Anyone who had Smes was lucky. Not only was he an amazing teacher, but a great person as well. He came to school every day and was unbelievably positive in a horrible situation. I think the best lesson he gave us was to push through the worst situations, and to keep a positive outlook. Rest easy, Smes, you're loved and will be missed. Hopefully we'll build a future you're proud of. After all, we are the future.
Today Mr Smestad has passed away. I was one of his students last year and I can't even convey how amazing of a teacher he was. RIP Smes. You will be missed so much.
Smes is by far one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's passionate about the subject and truly cares about his job. in short, he's an awesome human being and everyone deserves to have at least one teacher like him during their life.
Mr. Smestad is by far one of the greatest human beings on the face of this earth. He is good person, inside and out. While his explanations of certain topics may be long winded, he is very passionate about everything he says. Cherish every moment with him and always Remember that "The Test does not define you" and that "You are the future."
LOVE him. Teaches amazingly and interestingly.
He's also a good human being.
I had him last year, and have mr.clark this year. mr.clark is cold and sarcastic, and junior year is so hard. it makes it easier when you remember Mr.Smestad's catchphrase "the test does not define you"
By far, the best history teacher I've ever had in secondary school and post. Going back about 20 years now. He used to bring in these crazy instruments. Great teacher, great man.

Best teacher in houn. Makes the subjects interesting, funny jokes, and the most chill guy ever. He plays guitar, rides a motorcycle, sorta a hippy, goes to medieval fairs philosopher, God among men
very good teacher also very laid back, nice, and intelligent. his teaching style is more of lecture and you take notes so i guess its a taste of college
