Reading other reviews I noticed most of them were true. He was a hard teacher and he did make you bad at times. Now I look back at it and I release all the times he has called home, told me to start play more at home, and telling me what I did wrong over and over was not for him but he was doing it to make us better. He's been through a lot and still found some fire in him to teach us about his passion. 5/5 stars!
All the people saying he was mean, teachers aren't supposed to coddle you and in the real world, it might not be Whiplash but it's not sunshines and rainbows either. Yeah, he made me cry once but he always encouraged students, is direct, and is very knowledgeable. I'm also saying this now while I'm studying trumpet at one of the best music schools in the country, so it's not impossible to look past his tough exterior and make your learning experience with him valuable.
he is very mean, however if you really look at it, he is the most loving teacher. he is amazing and helps students improve so much. he almost made me want to quit band but now, 3 years later i look back and realise that he is the best teacher ive ever had.
While I absolutely despised him in 6th grade, throughout middle school, I came to realize that he is extremely passionate about music and simply wants you to achieve your best through hard work. Also has a great sense of humor sometimes.
although many kids hate him due to his strictness, he is an incredible teacher and taught me tons. as long as you practice and arent extremely distruptive, you will be fine and enjoy him. listen to what he tells you because i
most talented, helpfull and funny teacher i have ever experienced, people needa back their asses, up cuz he the best and u dont know wht ur missing
You have to want to play to do well. Just showing up and not practicing won't cut it. He is really talented.
Mr. Downey is a tough, challenging teacher but has helped me to excel in my playing. Though he is strict, he has definitely helped me and others do well by pushing us.
Mr. Downey only cares about winning competitions, he focusses on sight reading more than anything, which is NOT what jazz is about. In addition he always puts everyone down.
his class is really easy...and you get u learn good songs
Downey is pretty cool... he got me into jazz and his studio band is awesome
he does like to talk, but all three of my children adore him and seem to be learning alot from the class
Unprofessional behavior. Shares personal issues with kids. Excessive absences. Does not respond to any form of communication. Abusive style has alienated many kids from program.
i know he talks a lot but he actually taught me more about music than any other director i ever had (but i didnt get to have dr b)
He is a very discouraging, strange and unfair teacher at times.
the hypocrite rambles the whole period and gets mad when you talk
