Could not communicate with him. Constantly giving out many homework and quizzes. Child is stressed out.
Mr. Nieves is simply amazing. His class isn't necessarily hard but it is a lot of work. That said, it's manageable along with other demanding APs. HE WILL IMPROVE YOUR WRITING SO MUCH! Even if you don't get perfect scores on the essays, which he does grade harshly but very fairly, he will recognize if you put effort into his class and reward you greatly for it. Journals&annotations really aren't that bad. You'll leave the class feeling like you really gained something. So much love for this dude.
A different "vibe" than other English teachers at Stuy, for better or worse.
I had him for both fr comp and AP English and his class is far from an easy one. He grades essays pretty harshly but he makes it very clear what he wants to see in them. The assigned readings are fairly long and journal entries are a hassle. In any case, however, you will never find yourself bored in this class. You will almost always come out feeling enlightened.
The literal definition of a bae. So philosophical and fun. Tough grader but nothing makes me happier than coming to his class everyday.
Nieves is not the sweetest teacher, nor is he very humorous. But you won't find yourself sleeping in his class! He grades harshly, he uses a very meticulous system. However, he explains to you EXACTLY how he wants things done. He's not a philosophical guy, like a lot of other teachers at stuy; he isn't fun. But he wants things done his way and you don't have to do much creative thinking. Difficult in the beginning, you will get used to it though.
Mr. Nieves is one of the chillest teachers; yet, one of the hardest. I thought he was hard at the beginning of the year but as the year went on I got used to it and realized how great of a teacher he is. He gives killer quizzes but they don't really count. Most of your grade depends on your essays. Keeping up on writing journals may be tough but make sure to do them :)
Nieves is one of the harder english teachers but he is still a good teacher, his pop quizzes kill me though
He's a cool teacher, in a sense that he jokes around. But, he grades so harshly. His quizzes are so detailed and its ridiculous for him to expect us to know all of it. Watched a video and gives us a quiz about the SMALLEST and most INSIGNIFICANT details! The notebook journals are so annoying to keep up with;he makes us read so much a night, and expects us to do journals for all of it... The other Freshmen comp teachers are doing things entirely different, whilst we are repeating the same lesson
Soo, today classssssssss...
We're going to be talking about the greatest teacher in American Literary History.
But first, surprise! quiz!
I'll give you your aim later.
<3 you Mr. Nieves
He's a great teacher, and he knows what he's talking about. However, journal entries can be a bit of a hassle sometimes. Some assignments can get a bit repetitive, but he's a great guy and a great teacher. He has plenty of experience and he creates a very interactive learning environment. Quizzes can be a bit challenging, but I had him first and I'd always do well because I'd be reading on the train.
Mr.Nieves is a really chill and fun teacher. Though he does give more work than most other teachers, his class is enjoyable and not boring. You learn to write better and interact with your classmates much more better.
Class isn't hard, but he just gives a lot of work. Gives extremely hard quizes but they don't count for much anyway. He grades essays pretty leniently if you follow his directions, which is most of your grade anyway. Not hard to get high 80 low 90.
He's an extremely difficult teacher but he's a good teacher. He's funny and he acts more closer to the age group of his students. He has a lot of experience and I think that after taking his class, I will improve as a writer. To get good grades on his quizzes are extremely difficult because they are so detailed. Reading does take some time and he expects a lot from us. Getting a 80 on his quizzes is magnificent. However quizzes are only 15% of our grade anyways,
Why Mr. Nieves teaches his class wrong: While most English teachers would like to give some material to their students and go over it in intense detail, Mr. Nieves buries his students in lackluster readings and repetitive assignments, namely his journal entries. To simply complete a night's homework, on average is an hour and a half (50 minute reading, 20 minute journal entries, but 1:10 minute reading if you want to actually get above a 50 on a quiz). Basically, this guy's an incompetent teach
Take his class if you want the real Stuyvesant Junior Year Experience. Be prepared to stay up many nights and work hard to please his fickle personality
Journal entries are a real hassle, gives too much work in general
I love this guy, he is the most fun teacher I have ever had and I feel inspired to work hard and put effort into my work. I also like how he supports my writing style and lets me use my personality to fuel my writing
Not. A good teacher. Paranoid about journal entry , but never gives a clear requirements of how many should be done. Hardly teaching anything
Nieves is a good teacher. But he's probably one of the harder ones. He gives killer pop quizzes (but they don't count for much and he drops the lowest one), so don't sweat about those. He bases grades purely on number. Essays are worth 50% of your grade but he grades them pretty leniently. Getting a high grade is pretty difficult in his class, but getting around a low 90 or high 80 isn't that hard. Just do what you're supposed to do and you'll get a satisfactory grade. He's very fair.
One of the more challenging teachers, yet you can't help but love his class and respect him as an awesome teacher.
Nah, I don't really feel like writing about things so I'll just type this.
Such a strict teacher. Full of himself and cocky.
Very poor teacher. He is not up to the challenge of keeping up with Stuy students.
Anyone who's ever had him will describe him as "chill," which describes class time quite well (very controlled, quiet). His quizzes are RIDICULOUS, but they don't count for much so don't stress over t
I don't think that he's human. He is THE most non understanding teacher I've ever had the misfortune to meet. Post on his blog at 12:10 instead of 11:59? No credit. Handwrite a draft instead of type?
Mr Nieves!!!!! I love this guy so much, words cannot even begin to describe it. Had him freshman and junior year. My favorite teacher of all time at Stuy and definitely one of the reasons I love engli
Like someone said below, Nieves is the "straightest and fairest teacher." He doesn't consider his opinion of you and only gives you a grade based on numbers. He has really high expectations of kids an
Smug, obnoxious, and ignorant. Gives abnormally high midterm grades, than drops bombs on the unsuspecting at the end of the semester.
Be prepared for the class and do all your work (that includes journal entries), and he'll give you the grade you deserve. Make sure you do the reading; his pop quizzes can be difficult.
Doesn't check homework most of the time, such as reading. Very cool teacher and doesn't push a lot of homework on you. Very lenient on essays, too.
mad nice voice... js LOL i liked him. killer quizzes and his journal entries are ... yeah. he's the easiest teacher, but grades essays fairly in my opinion
actually the coolest teacher ever. he has a certain structure and style of writing that is super specific and you should adhere to it if you want high grades. otherwise he grades extremely harshly. i
he's extremely. funny. but hard class. very hard. pay attention. participate a lot. he's very fair and seems to understand his students. the grade you get, is the grade you deserve.
Really funny and cool, but requires more from students than most English teachers. But he gives straightfoward, unbiased grades, so just do the work and you'll be fine. Keep on your toes for quizzes.
He's definitely not an EASY grader-but because of that, I learned how to truly write essays in the most efficient way possible. He's really fair and funny, and I really feel more prepared for college.
mad chill, nice, and you can joke around. he's professional, but can also be your friend. gives way too many quizzes, but drops the bad scores. fair grader, and his class is pretty fun. ideal teacher
i had his AP. its a lot of work but if you do all your work all the time u should get a good grade. also make sure you participate. i got a 96. You actually learn in his class! Nieves is awesome
Write/talk about sports and/or music in your essays because apparently those are the kids who got 99 on the essays. Lots of work but worth it. He knows his stuff. You'll learn a lot. Easy essay grader
hes awesome and he teaches a LOT that other teachers dont. his ap classes get 5 while others get 3 or 4. hes so nice! i didnt participate because im shy and i still got a 95 cuz he saw tgat u cared
I had him for AP. Yes, it was a lot of work, but it was supposed to be!! It's an AP class for goodness sake! As long as you manage your time well, you should succeed. Most of all, you will learn!
He's a great teacher and a very easy grader when it comes to essays. It's those pop quizzes that are killer, and notebook checks. Just come prepared any you've got nothing to worry about it.
Mr. Nieves knows his stuff, and will grade you fairly, but watch out for participation and lateness, which are graded as one score. He has a drill sergeant-like attitude when it comes to being late.
A G Thang! He's is a terrific teacher!!!Hard but greatly improves your "skillz." He is hilarious, For example: "Don't play me, pay me!" HIGHLY recommended!
nieves has the most structured lessons of any english teacher i had. because of that, you actually learn a lot in his class. take my word when i say that you will rock at english when finishing this course.
i thought he was pretty awesome. he's really lenient actually, and i never learned more from any other english teacher. your writing will improve greatly, but you do have to work hard for it.
He is a good English teacher in the sense that you will learn different techniques and have a better understanding of the English language. However, I find the class dynamics and the topics too formulaic and boring.
Overall this guy is a good teacher. I feel like I'm learning a lot from doing the journals and reading the stuff. I like the class.
Arrogrant, works you to the bone, makes you forget sleep exists, and constantly thinks up ways to torment you with difficult projects/papers, tests, and notebook checks.
i am him now and i find his hws and tests very unclear and unreasonable. hes arrogant and always mentions how he has a master and i find it very hard to focus in his class
I don't know how good he was as a teacher cause he didn't teach much, but his classes were fun and we learned a lot from each other
Assignments are varied, and the instructions very clear.Grading: the most objective I've ever had in English class. Discussions, thankfully, almost never go into "I agree" land.
"He teaches english as if it were a science." That's a GOOD thing.
i have him now, and he seems like a nice guy. I agree, he does give alot, and i mean alot of work, For Ap anyways, but class is generally fun, and i enjoy it very much...Go 5th per
One of the worst teachers I've had at Stuy. He teaches English like it is a science. Switch out of this class if you can - it is NOT, in any way, enjoyable.
definitely not fun =( takes forever to grade papers and assigns more work than he can handle.
Mr. Nieves didn't teach much, he makes you do all the work. I didn't mind it so much because I particpated, make sure you take good notes.
well, he did give a good curve on the final. however, his duedates are not very well thought out or realiastic and can change without notice.
he's an insanely strict grader and doesn't even use good grammar...knows (and cares) way more about sports than english
ugh man im one of the quiet ones.. and participation is worth a LOT... got sucky grades even tho i did well on tests and projects.. :/
o man... make sure u participate... otherwise... *whistles* kiss ur good grade goodbye
one of the guys, but knows more baseball than English.
