His new flipped classroom style is not very helpful. If videos are just replacing lectures and in-class concepts, then I don't understand the point of having him there. Yes, we do a lot of problems in class and the videos do cover conceptual topics, but not to the full extent I wish he had covered. His multiple choice is all about conceptual, not calcuations which is the problems section part on the back of the test. I wish he could go more over these fundamental concepts that he tests in MC.
I am grateful I got Mr. Birdsong for AP Physics 1 this year. He is one of the best and most funny teachers at Monta Vista. He is very clear and helpful, he always tries to make sure we actually understand physics. Not super hard as everyone says it is, the test are curved so not too hard to get an A. It is pretty hard to tell if he thinks you are a good student or not, so I'm asking a teacher rec blindly lol.
This guy is one of the most knowledgable and smartest people I've met in my life. However, his AP Physics C class is definitely the hardest class in the school and you have to give countless hours of effort to be successful. But his teaching style results in him always being able to answer your questions and he's extremely helpful. His tests are insane but his great teaching and personality make up for it. His class is definitely my favorite this year.
Mr. Birdsong is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. I've had him for Physics Honors and AP Physics C, and both times I learned an incredible amount from him. He is the teacher you want. If you have a question (even if you don't have him), ask him. He will answer it entirely until you understand it. He wants to make sure his students, that want to learn, will learn. If you want to learn, you need him. Yes, the class is hard, but studying and asking questions is key. He is the best.
THE BIRD THE BIRD THE BIRD IS THE WORD
Birdsong is love, Birdsong is life. He is an amazing teacher, but be prepared to put in time and effort to get the grade you want and to understand the material. He is quite aproachable and will help you out no matter what, so do NOT be afraid to ask for help. Study efficiently and properly, and the material should come naturally.
Honestly, he's the best teacher you could get for Physics. But he's HELLA hard. He gives a ton of homework some nights and tests are hella hard, but even then, I'd say that his classes are my favorite!
Also, he's super approachable. I had a free sixth, and he let me come to him every lunch and 6th to get clarification and help. If you try hard, you get an A, if you don't, then no A. He gives you the grade he wants, regardless of the final grade(he admitted it himself)
It's hard to know whether or not you're good for this class. I thought I'd be really bad but ended up super good at physics. His physics class is not easy but it doesn't have to be painfully hard. Just learn HOW things work ; he gives a lot of lecture videos watch them all, and learn from them. Don't BS them ever. Read the textbook as well. Just keep learning the concepts, you have to think a certain way. Maybe take a physics class over the summer - thats what I did. I love Birdsong!
Really good class! It's both interesting and useful. Birdsong is really smart. As long as you do your work, you'll do fine.
Amazing......much more, and nothing less
This is going to help Mr birdsong get his head out of his butux because he usually only gets reviews from high school students or lower div undergrad "pets". This man is upset about his job as a phd physicist working underpaid at a high school where all his former peers earn way more than him. He isn't hard he just makes the class unnecessarily difficult. Akin to a bully stomping on ants, this is him. I'm sorry to say you gain nothing from his class but an idea of how to work excessive hours.
If you take Birdsong's physics classes, don't think it will be easy. However, he WILL prepare you incredibly well for college physics. If your only goal is to get an A in the class, do NOT take it unless you're a genius or you've done Calc already.
He has two of the hardest classes at MV, Physics Honors and AP. He makes them really fun and cracks jokes every few minutes. He is a fantastic teacher. His answers to your questions are sometimes roundabout and weird, though. overall, he's amazing!
You must have good time managing skills. Spend time in understanding the concept rather than just memorizing. Prioritizing is a crucial part of this course. it's better to do half of the practice problems multiple times than to solve all of them once
My advice to incoming students who plan to take this course: Unless you have a solid GPA beforehand and feel super confident in encountering any challenge, do not plan to take physics h/ap. You will probably be better of taking physics at de anza.
He is a really intelligent and knowledgeable teacher. He knows what he is teaching and that is one thing I appreciate about him. He might be arduous in teaching, but he knows the material inside out.
Great teacher, as long as you understand the material, you'll do fine. Just make sure you're ready for the tests.
He is such a great teacher. His class is not the easiest (if you're shooting for an A that is), but all the work you do for the class is 100% useful. His lectures are funny and I love his sense of humor. You will definitely learn LOADS. I LOOVEE YOU MISTER BIRDSONNGG <3
His class is pretty hard, but he is hella funny and REALLY smart.
had him for chem H thank god he doesnt teach it anymore even for physics, your much better off taking it in de anza this guy cant teach he hates chem and his chem kids too one of my worst experiences ever he doesnt teach in class so there isnt much classwork juss insanely hard quizzes and tests
He seems intimidating, what with his sardonic wit, but he's extremely helpful :) Don't underestimate his class: it's definitely challenging. I cut it close both semesters, ending with an 89.5%. Don't study a lot, study smart. Gain a conceptual understanding, and then practice as much as you need to. And don't fall asleep during lectures. They're quite interesting and provide invaluable tips and information. Birdsong's quite endearing; I adored his class and have no regrets about taking it.
The most badass teacher on campus. Tests are worth 50% and final 40%, but Birdsong seriously knows his stuff and keeps the class interesting. He uses a lot of "bad metaphors" (actually quite good) and is the best I've ever seen at relating the curriculum to real life. Just do all the practice problems and old test and an A in the class is manageable.
Hardcore teacher but chill in person and very lenient, especially if you're a senior. Has a unique sense of humor. Pay attention in lectures or you're screwed. Pay attention in lectures and easy B.
He is knowledgeable teacher. However, he doesn't give student enough time to complete test, which doesn't make any sense. Hard grade makes even good student losing confidence choosing career in engineering/phyics.
One of the most knowledgeable, dedicated, and responsible teachers I've ever had. Class is almost never boring, as he constantly makes jokes and "bad analogies." Birdsong is notorious for giving difficult tests, but a 16.7% (sometimes more) curve on every test makes an A quite easy. Always knows what he's talking about and returns tests the following Monday consistently. He's willing to answer any question you ask, although he can be a little intimidating when you approach his desk.
Great teacher. Had him 2 years. Notebooks are easy. He sucks with names. Ask for help if you need it.
Make no mistake: the class (AP and Honors) is hard. But he is one of the most accessible teachers - always available for students who are willing to ask questions. Prepares you well for everything.
He prepares you for college because you have to self study. He is a failure overall, poor planner, mostly a clown to fill-in time. Be prepared to work on your own. A great example of bad teachers.
I'm in college now, and for the most part, Birdsong really does prepare you well for first semester college physics. His honors class has the pace and the difficulty to compare to college classes
Many people express their worries over the difficulty of Physics Honors. Yes, some tests are challenging, but the generous curves make getting an A in the class a joke. You're going to experience the
He repeatedly curves his unfairly long tests because students are unable to finish them. Students are told to learn from their mistakes. Aren't teachers supposed to have common sense and learn from th
He is popular because he makes his test hard. A very poor planner. Being funny doesn't help academics. Students self-study for labs and 90% of them have tutors. He teaches a few problems on the board.
I honestly have no idea how I could sit through a block period of physics if he wasn't as funny as he is. He's a good teacher, and he knows what he's doing. Ask questions to get through his tough shel
Hands down the best teacher I've had at MV. If you're actually interested in physics and put in some work you will be fine. He's got a sense of humor and teaches way beyond the required curriculum.
I really learned a lot about physics from this guy. The class was not too hard, but it did involve a lot of work.
Umm im probably only saying this cause I have a B otherwise I would love this guy, but I find that sometimes he ignores kids that have a hard time following along in his lectures. Otherwise hes ok.
PhysH is one of the hardest classes here, so treat the low easiness factor seriously. You will inevitably work very hard for this class, but Birdsong makes it so that you will definitely learn a lot.
You will learn more in this class than any other class... the phys honors level is app. undergraduate level material, so you have to work pretty damn hard, but if you want to learn physics, thisisforu
Hilarious guy. His tests are definitely hard though.
his tests are difficult if you don't study REALLY hard or at least study everyday
Phys H. involved a lot of work, but do them and you will find the exams rather easy.
Took him for phys honors '02, phys AP '03. Hilarious guy, great teacher, like the last guy said you'll breeze through first year college physics
took his AP in senior year. and then took 5 physics classes in college. got As in all 5 classes without attending a single lecture. go to him if you want to learn.
The course is very difficult - because he's teaching you physics AP material in an honors course. But he's incredibly clear in lectures and will help you if you ask for additional assistance.
Basically most people who dislike him are bitter about grades. Best teacher class ever. Not everyone can make physics interesting
funny, intimidating, but not that bad. ask a lot of questions
funny in a sarcastic way sometimes but suks otherwise. makes frequent errors on test and uses "curve" as excuse. Only a few ppl have a A in his class. teaches concepts well but not the detail stuff. .
NICEST TEACHER EVER. Seems intimidating at first, but if you actually ask him for help he always does more than you initially ask for. you learn so much. I LOVE BIRDSONG!
AWESOME teacher. really hard class. ask him questions, he's really nice although at first, quite intimidating. lol. STUDY FOR FINALS!! (30% of grade)
Very cool, very helpful. I recommend a strong math background if you want to take his classes. If you don't have one, make sure you know trigonometry at least.
quite possibly one of the best teachers at monta vista. if you pay attention to the lectures and ask him questions about the material, you'll do fine. your grade is extremely dependent on the final.
Best teacher I've ever had - the class isn't hard if you really make an effort and finish all the work. To freshmen: take physics honors in your sophmore year, since you dont have that many AP's.
If you work pretty hard, you'll get a B quite easily. But if you want an A, work like you've never worked before!
Dude, if you want to really challenge yourself, go for it. But if you really treasure ur grades, man....good luck. He's an awesome teacher though. If you really understand the stuff, it gets simpler.
He's an awesome teacher. Physics isn't something easily taught and he does an commendable job doing it. However this class is HARD. The first few tests will gauge you can give you plenty of time to drop/transfer. Highly recommended!
Birdsong pwns n00bs. Anyone who says otherwise is just bitter about getting a bad grade in his super hard classes. Trust me, even if your GPA goes down, it's worth it.
incredibly hard and put likes to put kids down. really insecure.
Super hard class, but if you're willing to put some effort into it, definitely worth taking. Birdsong's always willing to answer your questions, and he'll keep you entertained.
he's hilarious. but the class is VERY hard. don't look for an easy A or an easy B
Very funny, keeps the class entertained; tests are frickin hard. 4.0 students get C's in his class -- don't take this class along with too many other APs and expect a 4.0. Good class tho - made you like the subject.
World's best teacher, hecka funny and makes an otherwise boring subject the highlight of the day
hard teacher, buy hey thats the way to actually learn something, something hard, something like physics. am i the first one to think he looks like the guy from king of queens?
people only like birdsong cause they think hes funny (which he is) but thats just about all hes got going for him. the man cant teach, and he couldnt care less about helping students. his no partial credit grading system is incredibly unfair.
Understands what he teaches, does a good job of stressing why stuff we learn is "cosmic". I don't think it's good to affect students' grades with extra credit opportunities that don't relate to physics. Still an excellent teacher overall.
extremely smart, really witty, and a really good teacher
Mr. Birdsong is the funniest; it's just that physics is hard as heck, so u gotta put all ur effort 2 it...
class was definitely hard but Birdsong's an awesome teacher--class is fun, physics is not so much
