[Experience reflective of AP English Language] Mr. Lee genuinely wants his students to do well, and makes his point when trying to push students in a certain direction. However, his methods are quite blunt his class does no "book-reading" and is entirely test oriented. He gives a lot of extra credit, so getting an A is within reach. His in-class personality can be overbearing, so just remind yourself that he just wants the best from you and try not to speak up (against him) and you will survive.
scary as HECK but prepares u well for the ap exam... spent 10-20 minutes every day for the first 4 months stressing how slow we were, i felt he was p frustrated with my class but after he accepted that we weren't as bright as previous years he was a lot more tolerable and the class was p enjoyable.. nearly gave me anxiety attacks when i thought he was gonna explode... spent the first 3 months of class in perpetual fear... class was incredibly stressful but also v helpful
He yelled at me for five minutes when I did nothing wrong. I'm not even in his class, he just hurt my feelings.
His clarity is so high because it is clear that Johnny Lee does not know much about anything.
Now to start off, Mr. Lee is extremely bipolar. If you're not in pow wow, don't take this class because he will automatically dislike you. He talks to himself constantly and forces kids to shower him with compliments. Everyone in the class is afraid of him and he makes the students feel like they're inferior. This class has very little to do with english since he made us do art projects all the time
He's a phenomenal teacher with a great collection of stories. He's helped me secure great scores on the APENG and AP Lit exams, and has been a great mentor in my life. Definitely take Pow Wow with him, especially if you're an incoming senior.
Fun tidbit - Every year for the past six to nine years, the class valedictorian is someone who has had Mr. Lee, be it for APENG, AP Lit., or Pow Wow.
Lee spends an abnormally long time in class convincing that he will help you without actually doing so. He also loves to tell us how slow we are, but he never realizes how much time he wastes trying to explain. Seriously, do we absolutely need that first 2 minutes in class when we turn in our homework. Also, he will try his very best to make your question/answer sound stupid so he can feel more intelligent. He will try his best to convince we are terrible at English. Horrible teacher.
Mr. Lee is absolutely useless, with completely unfair assignments and an unwilling attitude to help his students, he is bound to make my senior year miserable. He only communicates with students he "favors" and tends to avoid other students that are not of redeeming quality to him.
He does not do a good job at helping you, but he does do a good job at convincing you that he helps. :/
He is very bitter about graduating from an inferior university such as Occidental College, so he chooses to deflect the wrath onto his students. He claims that he got accepted into Harvard University - what a joke. He really needs to re-evaluate his Napolean complex as his class can be progressively depressing. Honestly, he does not want his students to attend a university better than Occidental, and he thus chooses to ruin our futures by trying to fail us miserably in JUNIOR YEAR. Game over
At first, Mr. Lee seems really scary but it doesn't really have anything to do with how he talks or acts towards students. It is mostly because students go in with the mindset that since he is a hard teacher, he must be mean, but he's really a great person and teacher. I have had many conversations with him, and not only does he tell funny stories, but he helps you to see things in a different perspective whether it be about school or family or anything else. I have a lot of respect for him.
Lee thinks whatever he does is godly and judges students personally. He is the worst "teacher" I have ever had.
Really knowledgeable man. But as a person, I can't find much reason to respect him. He is arrogant, he plays favorites, and would go at great lengths to tell you personally how stupid your answer, or even question, is.
He's scary at first (or most of the time) but after you have his class for a while, you realize he really knows what he's talking about and that he's really knowledgeable about the class. Be ready to volunteer, speak out, and work hard.
Unfortunately, I have nothing nice to say. Lee is a condescending
Mr. Lee is not helpful and is condescending. There are never any instances of advice or help that is truly helpful. All he ever says is to "do it yourself" or "figure it out." In literature, he scolds students for saying "stupid" answers. Hello, it's literature. We have obviously not been as educated as you have as we have not been on this Earth as long as you have. Give students an opportunity to express their minds, and maybe they will respect you more.
If you work hard and are dedicated, he will respect you and help you. Don't slack off
I am not rating him based on how nice he is or not. He knows English quite well. However he sucks at teaching. He is unable to talk to students in an objective and encouraging manner, which alienates some students. Part of the reason that he sucks at teaching is because he lets his ego take over, even when he may be right. A good instructor should be able to keep his tempers within most of the time and not let vulgar words escape his mouth when he is angry.
inspirational but moody...learned a lot about life, less about books
i can barely tolerate him , much less his class . -______--
Contrary to what those nasty rumors say, Mr. Lee has got to be one of the best, if not THE best, teachers I've ever had in my life. He talks tough, but the truth hurts. When I decided to stay in his c
He is a diva. Period. Full of absolute statements. Full of himself. Narcissistic. Overly opinionated. Cruel. Cold-hearted. Subjective even though he claims to be objective. Full of BS.
Great teacher AND human being. He might be difficult, but he knows what he's doing (and his pass rate would agree). After a year of APENG, being able to look back at the start and see the progress you
He taught me a lot. I managed to get a 5 from what I learned during the class with minimal self studying. Sometimes he's hard to approach or bitter but he means well (I think) and can be really helpfu
No offense to my fellow reviewers, but Mr. Lee = awesome. To do well in class, you just have to be willing to work hard. I don't understand the "kiss up" part -- be a good person and he'll like you.
The quantifiable system this site has makes Mr. Lee look terrible. These measurables ****. He teaches APENG and he teaches it darn well. He's even better outside of the classroom as a person.
yeah hes an alright teacher, but says the same generic stuff over and over. the guy has a really huge ego which is kind annoying, and always has mood swings, plus gives terrible, unclear directions.
he demands alot from his students. ALOT! If ur not willing to put in 3 hours for his class everyday then drop immediately. Mr. Woodin is a nicer and better teacher. Woodin prepared me for the world.
Mr. Lee is seriously the best teacher I have ever met. He's funny and always open-minded, and he REALLY wants to help us. Unlike other teachers, he puts in more time and effort into helping us prepare for the AP tests; his intentions are sincere and caring. If you haven't met Mr. Lee yet, I feel bad for you... he's already impacted so many of his students' lives, and we just met junior year too. You're the greatest, Mr. Lee :)
He made me cry, but through my tears I have learned proper engish gremer. Thank you Mr. Lee
lee is an awesome teacher who really knows what he's doing.he's really intimidating in the beginning, but once you get to know him he's a really cool person.
lets just put it this way, without lee i wouldnt be the person i am now. hands down the greatest teacher i have met
I am a senior in college now but I will never forget having Mr. Lee when I was a freshman. He challenged his students and was very easy to talk to. It's been almost 8 years since I had him... he will laugh when he reads this.
get on his good side cause he has alot of favoritism.. he hates it when you ask
He's the most fair teacher I've come across. The class parties are fantastic and I'm actually really sad that I'm not in his Apeng class anymore since it was basically like a family in his Apeng class. Don't Stop BeLEEvin!
one of the greatest english teachers ive ever encountered. He is at a college proffessor level and knows exactly what hes talking about. He is very hard to some extent but everything is worth it if yorue lucky enough to get him.
first semester: mr lee. second semester: mr woodin. mehhh i have to say mr lee's class is so competitive. i hated it. i love mr woodins class because he tends to not put too much pressure on us. i think woodin's class is screwed for MC questions (but mr lee made up for it in my case) but not essays. theyre abuot the same, except mrwoodins more laidback. about same amount of work thoh. just the atmosphere in lees class is tooooo intense and stressful!
I think the LEE lovers has spammed this but he was okay
Mr. Lee does a great job at teaching his subject to the highest degree. Not only that, but he also teaches students the value of always learning from everything and everyone. As his student I have learned the value of being open to new ideas and constantly improving my knowledge of the world outside Arcadia. I have learned to not take any experience for granted. This is a class I will never forget. Although the workload is tough at times, it improves our skills in English and our mentalities as students.
For those who believe Mr. Lee neglects helping his students mature as people, they are gravely mistaken. I am currently in his class and can say, along with many others who have (had) him, that he teaches us not only English but character as well. Those who are lucky enough to have him are guaranteed great ap scores and life lessons on respect, teamwork, and self-improvement. The class is engaging, effective, fun, eye-opening, and truly a nurturing atmosphere; its more than anything I could have asked for.
i have to disagree. i think mr woodin is a better ap junior english teacher. though mr lee is very tough and his class demanding, people fail to realize mr. woodin's class happens to be the same (except mr woodin is a tadbit more lenient) what makes mr woodin a better teacher than mr lee? throughout our time in mr woodin's class, he consistently stresses the importance of learning and being knowledgable students in the real world, rather than just getting a 5 on the AP test. lol. mrlee is really cool though
Mr. Lee is probably the hardest and most intimidating teacher I've ever had. He's also the one who has taught me the most about English and life. He cares more than any other teacher around, but his scary exterior is hard to get past. Work hard, participate in class, and don’t hesitate to ask questions when you have them. Take the time to get to know him—while his lessons on writing are extremely helpful, his wisdom and support beyond the academic sphere are what make students return year after year.
He's the best teacher I have had so far in my 3 years in high school. He's always there in his room, after schoo, waiting for kids to come in to either talk or ask for help, and he's always willing to give it. He may seem frightening at first, but you get used to it and realize that he's just chill :D
He has a way of moving me, a force of nature, his energy! It comes naturally! It comes naturally! When we collide, sparks fly. When you look in my eyes, it takes my breath away!!! He is the lightling and I am the thunder!
He's very challenging, which pushes people to work hard, but he does seem to have favorites :/
ok you've probably heard a lot of scary things about mr. lee, and yes, he is a terrifying man, but once you get beneath the surface he's a softie. he's awesome to talk to and gives great advice . his humor is extremely sarcastic and cynical, but don't take what he says personally. Whatever you do, do not get on his badside. Some days are really hard and all he does is bash on you, but other days are awesome where you'll have some of the funniest and awesomest memories of you high school career
Mr. Lee always tries to reinvent himself (both positive and negative). He is a down-to-earth person, but sometimes feels the need to hold the class on reigns. He isn't too keen on people he doesn't like.
he can really teach and you can tell that he puts effort into helping us write better. really big on favoritism. if youre only in it for the grade, drop the class. if you want to learn and develop your writing skills, stay. if youre a favorite, it's hard not to do well in his class. the best way to earn his favor is to participate -- regardless of whether or not your input is wrong.
My biggest regret in junior AP was that I was too scared of him to get to know him better. He's intimidating, but fantastic if you get to know him. Taught me how to actually finish my essays.
got along with him fine, was probably a favorite. however, he always angered me when he acts so condescending towards students who arent his favorites. i recommend dropping the class if u know u will not get along with him.
He has TA's who don't know how to grade according to MLA format. One TA docked me points and suggested I use APA format. What the heck?!!
Superb teacher. If you're willing to learn and work hard for it, you will gain experiences and knowledge that will be a part of who you are for the rest of your life.
He has is favorites FOR SURE. Dont get on his bad side. His work load and criteria is challenging but very useful for AP TEST as well as the practicing. Good at what he does, unfair and fair at times.
Even though he does play favorites, you learn A LOT in his class. You don't just learn about English, either; you learn about how to survive in the real world. Participate constructively in his class and he will favor you.
dude mr. lee is awesome, he is challenging, but forced me to learn a lot. I never had a better teacher
i love mr. lee! i actually learned something in his class, even though it was pretty hard and i had to do a lot of work.
I have no idea why everyone is hating on Mr. Lee. He is probably the best english teacher in Arcadia High. I actually learned something when I had him.
we turned in essays months ago and still havn't gotten them back. has favorites. good personality though
I would scratch my head when I do his assignments as I think they are irrelevant to the topic. At the end of period, everything opens up as he does his magic and connects his point to the assignments. Best English teacher!
I love LEE's class! he's strict but that only forces you to set higher standards for yourself and forces you to accomplish more.
great, great teacher. makes you work hard, and you pick up so many other skills alongside english. people complain about group projects and such taking too much time, but it's usually they're own fault =) !!!!
he is the best teacher.the people that talk smack are seriously LAZY PPL WHO DONT WORK HARD. How can they expect him to respect you if you don't respect him. The world does not revolve around you. Mature a bit and u'l lovehim
lee's class is very demanding and hurts the procrastinators but the skills you pick up (work ethic, group communication, WRITING, etc) DEFINITELY outweigh the negatives. its hard at first but will be worth it in the long run.
I currently attend Dana but I had him one summer for English, he seemed pretty okay to me...he made me compete in this spelling bee with this guy way older than I...
Seems like a cool teacher so far however, i don't like that he is impatient and has favorites. Everyone knows you have to kiss up to him so... Overall he's funny and stuff i just wish he'd have more tolerance with others.
mr lee is a decent teacher but quite intimidating, he makes you write a lot but it helps you prepare for future classes
I love Mr. Lee. One way or another, he'll play a very large role in every one of his students' lives. Personally, I've had him for two years and they've been amazing. I have learned so much from him!
My kid ended working way too hard for honors in Lee's class. Found out later that honors in his class is known to be just as hard as AP. Same sweat, lower label, why do it?
Fantastic teacher =D cares alot for "his kids". personalizes with his students. he is VERY realistic. (i personally like it cuz it doesn't make me fantasize about what could possibly happen.)
Great teacher but flawed. Plays favorites even though he says he doesn't, and his motivational rallies(ha) are either stirring or annoying. cares for most of his students though. And he's not as hard as people say he is.
very cool teacher. He helped me a LOT and he is just very wise. You can expect to learn a lot of life. He is my yoda
Probably the hardest teacher on campus, but most likely the most helpful as well. Prepare to be overwhelmed with work.
I LOVE him. He gives a lot of work, and he is one of the hardest teachers at AHS, but no one can prepare you better for the AP exam, and he cares so much about his stduents.
This class is not hard. And, if you think it's hard, it's only because you cannot write. Rude at times, to the point when his sarcasm is unbearable.
MR Lee is good, does have mood swings, if you get on his bad side your screwed. hes a wonderful teacher
AWEESSOOMME TEACHER, but his class is kinda hard, u have to work hard, and hes EXTREMELY fair, fair till the point u hate fair
hard class to pull thru if he hates u, but i had an alrite time, slept thru the class and got a hard time towards the end.
Mr. Lee is sooo Freakin Cool!!! I love that guy!!! Go AP!!! "Students in the Hands of an Angry Lee!!"
