No idea why he chose to teach math. He spends a good half of the class on the music or how many days are left. He also spends a good majority of the class going over homework, which means that giving you homework is his way of teaching, which I find confounding. Scales his tests so you don't totally fail, though, that's pretty neat.
Not a great "teacher" but that's just the way his class is designed. It relies alot on you and how much work you put in. Super fun class, super knowledgeable not just in math. Also if you do the homework and give adequate time to study for tests there should be no reason why you don't be above the median.
Mr. Stark is the most fun math teacher you will ever have. Some think the music and random facts are pointless, but they really help make the class more engaging. The more engaged you are, the better you will do. Talk to him a lot and ask him lots of random questions. Having fun in his class is worth it.
I agree that we spend a large amount of class time talking about random things like the background music and the days left of school, but that made me want to go to class every day because you will never know what he will talk about in class. I learned not only math in his class, but I learned things about planes and music as well. The tests are hard, but it is curved to the median so it is not that hard to get an A. Ask Mr. Stark questions about physics and astronomy, he can answer those too.
I had Mr. Stark for Calc AB last year. He's definitely a hard teacher.Main issue is that he spends on average 25 min of class time, if not longer, talking about planes/cars/his life, which was hella fun. However when he starts teaching something it always makes sense. He would be a great teacher, if he taught longer. The curve guarantees 25% A's, 25-35% B's and rest C's. If you ask for help in office hours he will explain thoroughly until you get it.Tests are doable if you study a ton, else screwed
If you ask him questions about math, he doesn't like explaining. If you ask him questions about bikes and cars, he'll explain in great detail. Rude teacher.
Mr. Stark is a smart guy but he is not a good teacher. He is not helpful and spends half the class time talking about himself like his airplanes/mountain climbing/past as a lawyer etc.
He was by far one of the worst teachers at Monta Vista. Don't get me wrong... He gives half the class As but he is extremely rude. He doesn't like explaining things to students and expects you to understand the minute after he explained it. He even harrassed a short student once by playing the "short people" song by Randy Newman. He likes to digress A LOT. self study!! Don't take his class. I took his class 4 yrs ago. Got an A but this is what I genuinely felt. Maybe things have changed.
I had Mr. Stark for my Calc BC class. I am a senior now and I have to say, Mr. Stark is the best math teacher I have ever had at MV. He is extremely knowledgeable and cares that his students learn. He doesn't teach by the book or make his students memorize formulas. Although his tests are hard content wise, the curve guarantees 50% of the class to have A's (which is a REALLY high percentage compared to pre-calc). Overall a very fun class but prepare to do some self studying.
Hello, I am currently 15 years old and I want to become a helicobacter. I know theres a million people out there just like me, but I promise you Im different. On December 14th, Im moving to Stark Airport; home of the greatest helicobacter. Ive already grew tentacles, and now aim to enter everyone's stomach everywhere I go as training. I may not be a helicobacter yet, but I promise you if you give me a chance and the support I need, I will become the great helicobacter pylori.==*rmt*==
his class is really fun and isn't boring unlike other math teachers. he is super helpful too
Hes too smart 4 me just because you teach some brightest kids in mv doesn't mean every single student in your class is a genius whenever i dont get anything he has this strain in his voice and hes like thats what i just said! and imlike lol well i dont get what you just said also like omg he wastes half the class time fanatasizing about helicopters and planes and how many days r left till the next summer which i dont give about -_- so if u r dumb like me drop out of his class
At first, Mr. Stark might seem to go a little off topic, which may be frustrating especially since it is AP Calc, but as time goes on, you realize how helpful and knowledgeable he really is. He is a great help if you see him during office hours or something, but to do well on his exams, he himself advises that you get as much practice as you can, and look through DeRuiter's material. Get ready for the year you learn to love math!
mr. stark is a really interesting guy but you REALLY have to self study, he doesnt teach much in class (most of class is spent on the daily countdown) tips: study from the AP book, PAY ATTENTION TO HW, study deruiters stuff, dont ask peers for help - they probably wont also, go to stark after school and he'l be happy to help but really - self study i went from kim to stark - they are crazy diff dont be worried if you fail at first it gets easier as u go on
He teaches, but if you don't learn fast/aren't a math genius learn how to self-study. A little scary to approach with questions, and your grade is based on if you're smarter than others. Not fun.
Such a chill class. Mr. Stark can help you learn to appreciate and love math among other things; his lectures are awesome and funny and he goes into great depth so that everyone can fully understand the concepts... Don't miss out :D
Hard tests but good curve. Only teaches what he's interested in (Calc C and D)... but is AMAZING when he teaches. Will inspire you, but prepare to self-study. Plenty of interesting stories in class
SUPER EASY CLASS MAN. ITS A JOKE. HE NEEDS TO GRADE HARDER.
He's difficult but a great teacher. Also a really cool guy.
It is definitely a difficult class. But with the curve, it's okay. If you can self-study, then you will be fine. If not, then switch out or drop immediately (unless you're a genius of course).
The curve is scary, but works out for lots of people. Class is interesting, but be prepared to study lots for tests.
Very smart and we spend class learning about other more interesting things aside from calculus. Getting an A is not impossible at all and despite his hard 'learning opportunities', there's the curve.
Really intelligent guy, and provides lots of time in class for HW questions. His reputation as the hardest math teacher is exaggerated; getting an A is do-able! glad I got Mr Stark as a math teacher.
don't let his tests and quizzes intimidate you; if you understand the concept, you really should have no problem getting above the median.
smartest person on earth. lenient, and stress-free class. we spend 15 minutes talking about how many days are left. then 15 mins on random topic, 20 mins going over the hw, and 5 for new stuff.awesome
VERY SMART and approaches math in a unique way that most other teaches don't. BUT is barely around when you ask for help :( but that would be the only thing wrong with him.
He is the smartest person I've ever met. He literally knows everything you ask for. He encourages you to learn math. I luv him sooo take him!!!
GET HIM FOR PRECALC! He teaches really well and curves. He makes you understand, which is CRUCIAL for Calculus. Switch in but not out. Mr. Stark is one of the best teachers I have had (he's AWESOME!).
Mr. Stark is a very smart teacher but he fails to actually "teach" the class. He expects you to know concepts without him fully explaining them, and he goes off on random tangents. DO NOT EXPECT AN A
Lots of people mistake his tests for being ridiculously hard, they are just problems that make you think outside of the box. You can't memorize equations to get by; he teaches you to apply the math.
Does he go off topic? Yes. But it's good going off topic. As for the math, he's very good at showing how problems are solved. The tests will always be hard but if you keep up you can beat the curve.
He is the greatest teacher on campus. His style of teaching compells you to expand the breadth of your knowledge and your intelligence. Rather than just drill concepts, he promotes real understanding; he makes all concepts lucid and math, for some reason, just comes together and just makes sense.
Mr. Stark is the most interesting person on campus. He is such a great teacher and I'm glad he's doing this instead of law.
Very cool teacher. He is funny, and makes you think outside of the box. His tests are decent if you can keep up with the material.
one of the most BRILLIANT people i've met. teaches so that you will not forget right after a test, but if u have even a little bit of trouble - ask him for extra help or plan your own time. its true, he does go off topic. :)
he is one of the smartest teachers at school but his teaching isn't that good. he has a hard time staying on track and sometimes teaches us stuff we need 5 minutes before the quiz.
Very knowledgeable, funny and helpful. He doesn't play favorites at all, and he's very clear. His tests and quizzes are hard but he curves and ultimately you get SMART
Very funny, EXTREMELY BRIGHT teacher. He currently is the smartest man I know. NEVER FAVORS! VERY fair! doesn't yell at his students.
i am scared for next year when i wont have mr stark as my teacher for math. he's amazing
Mr. Stark makes sure to explain WHY each of the theorems and ideas work, rather than just expecting that you memorize them. His course makes sense and is self-explanatory, but if you don't study and don't listen, you definitely will not score well. And he curves generously!
Mr. Stark is the best math teacher I have ever had. He makes complicated math concepts easy and has lots of funny, interesting stories.
I WAS BAD AT MATH, BUT NOW IM GOOD AT IT THANKS TO HIM
best math teacher i've ever had. prepared us so well for the aps. impossible tests tho.
Mr. Stark made precalc make sense and drove many in my class to new understanding. Lots of great examples and stories.
