If you get her, you're in for something definitely. She's definitely the hardest teacher I have had so far, in terms of tests and projects. (Like you feel proud if you get a low B on a test from an Asian perspective). However, because of her really strictly graded tests and projects on especially wording and work shown, you really get whipped into shape for the AP test.
Don't give up if you get bad grades though. She helps every student who is a tryhard to get an A and understand physics
Mrs. Newman definitely knows what she's talking about and although I really think she wants to help her students, she really couldn't. Her regular physics class is identical to her AP class, which is extremely disappointing to her regular kids. Her lectures were interesting and I understood them well. Her tests, for me, were on the harder side. Overall, I think she needs to make changes to her regular physics curriculum and find a way to better help her students.
Before I met her I had heard so many horror stories about her. Every one said how she is so strict and mean. HOWEVER, she is a very nice and helpful teacher. Yes, she does assign a lot of work and makes the tests very hard. Newman is probably one of my favorite teachers. Many people don't study so they do poorly and blame the teacher, which is why so many people complain about her. I highly recommend Newman. She is so passionate, and helpful, and loves to help. 10/10
One of, if not the outright best teacher I've had at TPHS. Physics is math-centric, and Mrs. Newman assumes you've had 1 going on 2 yrs. of Algebra, but her explanations are clear and she's always ready to help .. during class, or outside class as she's available. It's also clear she really takes personal interest in her students.
she is an average teacher regarding course material ( ap physics) but she assigns an outrageous amount of labs which she grades very hard and which take up class time that should be used to teach, as well as the students' time that could be used to study the material.
Mrs. Newman as a person is not terrible. She's a little hard to pay attention to and talks to her class as if we already know exactly what she's talking about. She teachers her General Chemistry class as if it were an AP Chemistry class. It took every bone in my body to help me pass this class. Way too heavy of a workload and the material is so confusing. Her tests are terrible and you have to read the chapter before she even teaches the subject or you will have no chance of understanding.
More than most teachers, I'm learning self-reliance for self-confidence. Sure, some will buy a physics grade outside of TPHS, but what's learned? I like the practical use of algebra and geometry. Sometimes the lessons are hard to grasp, but it's not hard to find Mrs. Newman for help.
loving her classes; had chem and now physics. shes always available after school and at times before for help. no - she wont "give" the answer, but helps you get there.
Mrs. Newman's lectures are very valuable if you pay attention in class. However, while the lessons appear to make sense when she is teaching them, they are much more difficult on the exams. She teaches and lectures on the simplest form, but assesses on the most complex. She is also very unapproachable and challenging to confront.
For physics, she is very confused and messes up lessons frequently. Would not recommend taking AP Physics with her if you get her. It is possible to get an A but also very likely you will get B or C. Doesn't assign textbook questions or reading but expects you to do it, as your tests are straight from the textbook
Great teacher. Seemed hard while taking course, but looking back ... was prepared for life after TPHS.
Great teacher ... period. Lectures are great and tied together with fun labs. The homework relates to the coursework, Mrs. Newman provides help without giving away the solution, so you do learn. My sister had her, and said Mrs. Newman was the one teacher who really prepared her for university.
Very clear understanding of student's skill strengths and weaknesses; provides specific examples to back assessment. Great insights on opportunities for improvement.
Best teacher during my 4 yrs at TPHS. The homework was relevant to the subject, and really prepared me for life beyond HS. I don't think that people who struggle are lazy, but they should get a grip on the need of Algebra 2 BEFORE taking a math intensive course. The one thing I'll write .... she cares more than most teachers that he students do well, and her methods do work.
Tests are not very hard but she grade her labs and homework very intensely! I had an A in Tests but got a B in the class due to low homework and labs. I have heard differently for physics students but her chemistry class is pretty insane
Awesome teacher, she is one of the most experienced teacher I have ever known. The only downside is sometimes homework takes forever to finish. But overall great class, great teacher
Mrs. Newman was an dedicated chemistry teacher. If you want an A in your class, it will not just come to you. You have to work for it. Homework takes about 3-5 hours or so per night for her class alone, but with labs it could take a little longer. Chemistry is unpredictable, but with Mrs. Newman you will feel a little more stable. It will definitely feel like you live there by the end of the year. But if you ever need help, she will be there waiting for you with answers of guidance.
Not so easy as to be boring. Most answers to labs are written in the labs, so just read and fill. Help is always avail.
She teaches like our only class is chemistry and is unclear on what we need to know for tests and quizzes
Great science teacher ... really helpful and knows her subject both forward and backward. The classwork is hard - its math - though the grading is really easy.
mrs n is tops for math based sciences. shes not that hard, but i think a lack of math skills is ruff on those without it. one takes her chem class expecting to work, and work you do. some dont like having to work but it sure beats learning to coast. and i like that i can get help whenever shes freed up - am or pm.
Horrible teachers. She's extremely boring and meticulous to every detail. I've never met a scientist who hates creativity as much as her.
She is intimidating at least in AP but she is nice and helpful, and very dedicated. Pretty much guarenteed 5 on AP test in her class so don't worry about that but the class itself is very very difficult, absolutely insane workload and expect chem to become your life, although you learn A LOT and it prepares you for any future difficult courses.
Mrs. N was dedicated, thorough, and fair. Gen. chem is really just applied math, so expect a lot in class, in homework, and on tests. Mrs. N is really available to help with the concepts ... just don't expect her to do your work. And expect that chemistry won't be the only thing you learn from her class; you will learn what it is to work for your grade.
shes really dedicated to her students and is always there to help. she loves the subject. if i had any other teacher in tp i wouldve failed. its really not as hard as it seems in the beginning
Great person and truely dedicated to teaching. She teaches the subject, but her approach isn't about memorization.. You learn to think and you work for your success. She just helps you get there.
Toughest teacher I had but the greatest teacher I've ever had. She's dedicated and that rubs off onto her students!
AMAZING!!! Had her for AP and loved her, even if the class was impossible. As for the gen chem kids, you'll like her when you realize how hard she works and when you're willing to work hard yourself.
colleges set sky high stds for AP but Mrs N brings it to earth. she's best at teaching chem for those wanting to learn. really goes all out to help. subject is difficult but shes fair
possibly the most dedicated teacher that ever existed, teaching the most difficult AP Chemistry class that ever existed-which is a good combination but the class workload is insane.. gl future chemers
ok person down there who says AP chem is easier than gen chem obviously you've been inhaling way too many fumes shoulda took that safety advice seriously after all huh?
The only class that I never missed. Mrs. N tought us to appreciate math in chemistry. She really makes sure you understand stuff and welcomes questions. Her class is so relaxing but you still learn! Always available after school for added questions and collegiate advice. She's the best teacher ever!!
only bad thing about mrs newman is that shes very vague. otherwise shes the best teacher ever!!!!!!!!!!! but she is kind of extreme about safety...dont take her safety advice toooo seriously. youll survive. btdubs i have her for AP so its pretty easy but if you have her for general chem then i heard shes kind of hard.
Nice teacher, but takes a her time to return assignments. She works us with homework and knocks points for little mistakes, but the tests have been pretty easy so I guess the practice is doing something. No complaints about availability as she's always around after school to help, when you need it. And some of the labs are really cool, and interesting.
very accessible. lots of homework but tests have been easy. my best class this year.
Tests have been fairly easy. Lectures at times hard to follow with the pace of info delivery, but Mrs. N. is always available to help before, during, and after classes.
mrs n has good lectures and the labs are interesting. shes a safety hawk but we do need it. gives quite a bit of practice homework but it helps. tests don't seem very challenging. she is great about taking questions before, during, and after class -- my prior gc teacher was gone 5 min after the last bell. dropped gc last year because it was hard. omg -- gc much easier after finishing algebra. the admin who came up with the idea that gc requires no prereq's doesn't understand education.
hard chemistry teacher, but explains things well. obviously people who don't do well are those that don't read the textbook and actually think about the concepts. Use your brain people!
Newman is a very helpful teacher who gives you very clear notes. But the assignments and tests are hard for others to keep up.
gc's easy as long as you can keep up with the math and do the homework for understanding.
Great teacher and very helpful. Very nice and always gives time when asked. She's amazingly alert to everything going on during labs. Chemistry is a hard class, but she makes it very understandable and fun.
She is super dedicated and would stay super late to help us...really good teacher even though she was hard
Whoever Says that Newman is a bad teacher is just Wrong. Her teaching style can be a bit confusing at times, but she always makes sure that you understand it, be it after class, during class, or after school. She's always willing to help, and literally spends her entire life trying to improve the lives of her students. If you don't like her as a person or the class that she teaches, at least try to have an appreciation for the amount of dedication that she has for her classes (this maybe only applies to AP)
She's definitely tough, but she's also the most dedicated teacher I've ever met. If you can stand her menacing glare enough to ask her for help, you'll realize how great she really is.
The most difficult class you will ever take, but also unbelieveably fun. Staying after school for "collaboration" with your lab partners is awesome. newman will stay behind until around 7 just to help people. one of the most dedicated and helpful teachers i have ever had. even though i loved the class, i would never take it again. its too hard! haha
hate her non AP class. i have no idea what to do for the lab due tomorrow
The ABSOLUTE best AP Chem teacher you can hope to find. I love her class, and look forward to it every day.
A class that just requires hard work. If you do not completely understand something, just ask her, it really helps. Oh, and always start the HW the day it is assigned and don't do it before the day it is due.
Like wat everyone else says, She's teaching a difficult subject, and she's teaching it at a college level. Anythings u dont understand? She stays afterschool nearly everyday, and she explains it thouroughly. If you 100% understand the homework, and do extra practice problems, there isnt really an excuse to do bad; unless the whole subject itself is too hard for you to understand. This is an AP class.
I dropped chemistry after taking the subject at another school. Mrs. Newman makes chemistry understandable, and gives lots of tips about solving the math. One tip: do the homework for understanding and not just for credit.
Mrs. Newman makes an otherwise difficult subject, chemistry, understandable. She is nearly always accessible before or after class periods to explain the subject, and often fields questions from students assigned to other teachers. The one thing I'll write is that I'm really glad I waited to take the class until after having taken algebra, though.
I was in her class last year, and got a hideously low 82. She told me at least 5 times that I have a "perpetual refusal to follow the simplest of instructions." I dropped after 1 semester. Newman begged and begged me to stay and told me a bunch of lies about regular chem. Anyways, I dropped and got Mr. Rall, who is super cool, and then took the SAT2, and got an 800 after Newman predicted I'd get a 500. Moral of the story: You don't have to take AP Chem.
I like Mrs. Newman & AP chem, but her grading is ridiculous and she doesn't explain anything unless you ask specifically for it. And then you still don't really get it. Takes her forever to give labs back, so you don't ever know how much you're failing.
She's a nice person and is pretty funny but omg her class is so stressful. She doesn't teach and expects you to know everything about chemistry. She isn't all that helpful and the way she grades is so random. She'll take off all these points for doing one little minute thing wrong. If you get her, definitely switch out. Don't get me wrong, she is a nice person but that doesn't outway the way she teaches.
I took regular physics thinking there wouldn't be that much homework...au contraire! She assigned us a ridiculous amount of homework- for example, a lab, a huge worksheet, and bookwork all in one night. She made me never want to do physics again in my entire lifetime and I am thrilled to be done with her class. I dreaded walking into her class.
This class takes over your life, even regular. You have to devote a LOT of time. Newman isn't the most friendly person but she works 24/7 and is almost always there for extra help-take advantage of it
hardest class i took in high school. made me feel sick everytime i went in there. best part of the week was thursday or friday after 2nd period. she was an alright teacher and would stay forever to give you extra help. its just too much work.
she is a difficult but very understanding teacher. She gives you extra credit all the time and she really wants to help you but she is just very intimading. When she gives advice, follow it , because it really helps. Do all your homework and try your hardest. Try to do your homework the day is assigned and then u can check the answers the next day to see if they are right and fix it...she's cool like that and she even stays after skl almost every day if u need help.
She can be very intimidating and her classes are probably among the most difficult at the school, but when you get to her really she's very nice and caring. She will go out of her way to help you before or after school if you need it, but you have to ask.
She was the most intimidating teacher I have ever had. She grades easier than coordt, but that's not really saying much. She likes funny people. unfortunately, I wans't one of them
she is a pretty nice teacher. her class is hard but she teaches well. dont mess up on lab safety and always keep your bathroom passes and do lots of extra credit it saves your grade
Best AP chem teacher you can find. Extremely helpful, clear, and hard-working. As long as you work hard, A is not unattainable.
She is always available if you need help. She is very friendly and helpfull. She is understanding of extenuating circumstances. her lectures are always very student-friendly and easy to understand.
ms newman is like one of the most available teachers there are. shes always there to help you even if you have sports or other the clarity is a bit hard only becuase to me the subject is hard but ms newman does her best to explain what she can
Mrs. Newman was such a good teacher. Even though I missed a lot of her classes last year, thanks to her, chemistry was easy. I'm so grateful to have had her.
Hard class, but she puts in a lot to help. Ppl who say she doesn't try to explain don't put in the effort to take advantage of what she teaches. Nice enough
she actually DOES want you to succeed, but if you don't put in lots of effort you won't get any kind of good grade.
omg shes horrible and she doesnt help at all she wont teach the material, shell just give it to you. if u have problems with anything in her class she wont help
She is the hardest teacher i have ever had. Dont get her. She grades extremely hard. Its impossible to get an A and even hard to get a B.The only b i got
Too many people underestimate her as a teacher. Yes, she is a very hard grader; Yes, most people get B's, but you will find her very helpful- just participate
Newman is very hard, but an excelent teacher. I got an A in the class, but it was hard earned. She explains, and I actually learned the material.
she is a very good teaher, i learn a lot in her class.
Ms. Newman is a wonderful teacher !! I've learned so much from her !! =)
Mrs. Newman is awesome. She's one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Wow Newman is scary. She hates everyone and she claims that she explains certain things when she doesn't. Thank god me and a ton of other kids dropped her class
She's sooo hard. She can't explain things well. She just...is not a great teacher.
