best teacher at hunter. we learn a ton and he's a really nice guy. hard essays, but work at it and pay attention and you will succeed.
I like mr zegers, but he assigns so much work :// we have to read five times as many books as every other eighth grade class, but his classes are interesting and he pushes you to work hard. i expect that his intense work load will b helpful for the upcoming years! he's also super funny :)
z-man's is da best
he throw the chalk on top of the closet like Lebron
he got brand new glasses that make him look stylish
He isn't a good teacher, he gives exorbitant amounts of homework and not afraid to fail half the class because apparently, his detailed instructions come after the assignment. He is currently giving me an all-nighter and posting this rant is the only way to get my emotions out. If you have him, get ready for stress, all-nighters, and crying. Not a good teacher overall.
Honestly my favorite English teacher. Not an easy class but challenging in a good way. Frequent joking around and some teasing but don't take it to heart, (some people do). Also he's reasonable and easy to talk to.
This kid in my class did the reading but couldn't answer one of his q's, so he assumed she hadn't done it. The next class, he said loudly enough for everyone to hear (bc I sit across the room and I heard!) "did you do the reading? Unlike yesterday?" And the funny thing is that she's a good student and that she had explained the reading to me before class because I hadn't done it so she clearly did it :)
He's way too passive aggressive and jumps to wrong conclusions
I really enjoyed being in Mr.Zegers class. He's a teacher that makes the class very interesting and fun while also teaching us something. At times, it may be difficult, but Mr.Zegers does the best he can to explain to us. Loved his humor. I can't stop laughing and smiling in his class, but I can still manage seriousness. How does one do that?! I don't know how he does it but he's a great teacher.
I like Mr. Zegers hes got the moves like jagger.
Really liked him. Provided an actually challenging and intellectual course and didn't let the slackers slack off, unlike a lot of the other English teachers.
Mean-spirited and self-centered. Vindictive and made up stories during parent teacher conferences accusing me of throwing profane tirades. Thinks he's god's gift to poetry. If not for tenure, he would have been fired years ago.
He was a nice guy and a good writer. Great for creative writing, which is what he really cared about. But in terms of writing essays about books (FLEs), his grading methods were.... terrible.
Dear Mr. Zegers,
If I had to give you a grade based on your teaching of 8th grade English, I'd give you a "Zero-Missed the Point".
One of your pissed off Eigth Graders
Maybe if he actually explained what to do and didn't just fail you for having a different opinion in your essay...
He's terrible. Instead of helping me become a better writer, he's made me a far worse one. His requirements for FLEs are so confusing, people are considered "lucky" if they get above an 80. He's not afraid to fail an entire class because he doesn't agree with their opinions. He doesn't give any feedback. I asked him about rough drafts, which are mandatory (and helpful!) in any other english class, and he told me that "he has a life and doesnt want to spend time on that". Self-centric and mean.
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. Gives huge assignments with extremely little notice and no help. Despite the fact that he gives us literally zero feedback along the way, he grades incredibly harshly and is not afraid to fail someone no matter how hard they have tried on an assignment. He thinks that his ideas are right and no one else's can even be heard in his class. English used to be my favorite subject, now it is by far my least favorite.
Sucking all the fun out of english, which for me is the freedom we have to write about whatever we want. Essentially said that if we didn't write about what we talked about in class we'd get Cs. He wants the assignments done a certain way but doesn't explain how. His lesson plans for books don't have the same cohesiveness that I got from all of my previous teachers. Generally unhelpful and unclear. Not funny enough to compensate for all of these flaws.
You really do love him or hate him. I happen to love him, though I don't blame others for hating him. He's one of the smartest people I've ever met, and he has one of the most beautiful souls. I'm very glad to have known him. I am a thinker because of him, though maybe I'm giving myself too much credit. At least, because of him, I know what a thinker IS. He's not easy and he's not always clear, but he cares more and knows more than so many of my other teachers. Got an A, so!
He's a terrible English teacher, partially because it's not really his calling. He doesn't appreciate new ideas and pretty much wants regurgitated class notes for f.l.e.s. HOWEVER his Creative Writing class is completely different. He is an amazing teacher and he really cares about his students when it comes to this elective. I'd recommend taking CW and switching out of his English courses.
I'm not at all surprised by the bad reviews for Mr. Zegers. You either love him or hate him. I've had him twice throughout my Hunter career and I have grown to appreciate his style of teaching. Yes, he may be slightly judgmental but he has great intentions. He wants to turn jocks into poets and BC Calc students into masters of prose. His creative writing class was one of the most rewarding classes i have ever taken. If you perform, he will deliver beyond your expectations.
class with this guy is pretty amusing, but his assignments explanations are kind of unclear. also, his handwriting. can't understand anything he writes on the board. he's a little intimidating, too.
he is the best! always willing to help outside class if you actually approach him, and he always wants to hear about the lives of his students
work he gives is super unclear. no one knows how to do it. annoying to deal with and when you meet with him he sits there and plays 20 questions with you. if you get him switch out hes driving me NUTS
obviously picks favorites. when you say something he doesn't like, he'll just narrow his eyes at you, which is kind of intimidating. and never really explains anything.
an abominal teacher - way too pretentious, unwilling to consider ideas outside his comfort zone
He's a hard teacher, and easily irritated. He is a bit adamant about being right, but all in all, he’s an amazing teacher. I love him, and I think if you work hard in his class, you’ll do fine.
ehhhh id rather have him for creative writing just not for english- hes terrible at explaining FLEs and its always abotu what he expects- always has to be his way. and hes very strange...
He's hard, okay, and he's easily angered. But his we-must-do-twice-as-many-books-as-everyone-else regime was really effective - I went from a B- in 7th grade to an A in 9th, and had everything in between in 8th. He's smart; he just asks too much of us.
Zeger's class is too intense. You have to do five times more work than everyone else. He is unclear and if you disagree with him in class or in an essay, WATCH OUT.
I usually try not to say that I hate people, but there are absolutely no redeeming qualitites in Mr. Zegers. He is so incredibly biased that it's amazing that he's still at Hunter. He doesn't teach anything, then when you ask him questions he goes "weren't you paying attention??", rolls his eyes, groans at you and pretty much makes you feel incredibly stupid. Then he wonders why you do badly. There is only one thing he could do to give his students an educational, interesting remainder of the year: RETIRE!!
He's really not that bad. The material he's teaching is extremely confusing. My dream used to be to become a writer. Now, that dream is dead because of him and another unamed english teacher. He's more understanding of students than other teachers, because of his children, so he's an ok guy.
As a student who has some trouble with Zegers I would not say that he is completely unfair or even biased against me, but I would say that his grading criterium are uniquely his own and extremely difficult to adjust to for some students.
This guy is biased. Before your essay, go ask him for "help" and basically rewrite everything he tells you. This is the only way to get above a B.
Whatever he tells you to notice in a book, or what he talks about is something you would never find on your own. Basically you are in trouble if you don't take notes because you can't write the essays
terrible teacher, super unclear, assigns so many essays. won't except any ideas or papers that don't support his own opinion. if he doesn't like you, good luck.
he picks favorites, is extreamly unclear about what he wants in essays, and never calls on the people at the sides of the room. and then he thinks we all love him! ha. he couldn't be more wrong.
He's nice but you can tell he's always looking for what he thinks because when someone happens to say it, it's the only thing that goes on the board
He's a complete egotist, and refuses to talk about any points he doesn't agree with. He chooses his favorites, but treats them terribly, too. He draws conclusions from no real evidence. Have fun.
Has very bad posture. He really knows how to draw absolutely preposterous conclusions from the littlest of hints in literature, so I'm not sure about how right he is.. but he seems to think otherwise.
He would be an all-around good teacher if he weren't so conceited and judgemental. If you don't agree with his point, you are automatically wrong, arguing for your point even with evidence doesn't help.
unless you completely agreed with him, you wouldn't get an A. Would grade harshly and then not say what you did wrong. very conceited, made us compare his poetry to Emily Dickenson
gave me pretty mediocre grades for papers that i worked for like a week.suspect he only reads intros and conclusions. for my final, he prolly read everything, finally gave me an A
obnoxious and judgemental. he tells students that he thinks seem like they wud be outgoing outside of class to participate but leaves the others who he stereotypes as quiet alone.
Very cool-- he's really nice, makes class fun, and he's a pretty lenient grader.
He's a good grader and goes over everything to help you do better. Reading classics with him will be the funniest times of your life.
very arrogant and self-centered teacher. If you don't write in a way that appeals to him personally, don't expect good grades.
kewl guy. doesnt like the fact that i dont participate, but he doesnt pick on me too much-- likes my FLES n writing peices
Mr. Zegers is such a cool person and a great teacher! Everyone else, you need to ease up, he's just doing his job. Chill. Anyway, Zegers rocks!
For FLEs, all you have to do us come up with a thesis based on what he says in class and some quotes. He takes his acting seriously, so use costumes and reherse
Mr. Zegers was great. He always told me how good a writer I was. I had him 8th, I'm in 10th now, and I hope I get him next year for Creative Writing.
He's a real mixed bag, sometimes he likes me, sometimes not. His goal it seems, is to get you to ask him for help, which is smart, but a bit too cocky.
Love him! He assigns way cool projects and books! he grades pretty easy on stuff 2 if he knows u tried. I don't know why everyone thinks he's so mean
He is fun in class, but horrible when writing Essays. He gives no help, and then grades hard. He is okay, but kind of annoys me
Good guy, great creative writing teacher, really tough and kinda close-minded on FLEs. He assigns long readings so it's sometimes tough to keep up.
He's funny, but he grades kind of harshly. The discussions are OK, and he's enthusiastic too.
One of the few teachers I had in 8th grade that I can actually remember ... good writing assignments that I pulled back out in college to re-work...
i hated him when i had him, but now that i don't, i think he's one of the best. he doesn't let you get big-headed, and i like that about him. great teacher.
Mr. Zeger is an awesome guy, and a very good teacher. He is, however, very dogmatic...but other than that he's very clear and fair.
very good english teacher, can really appreciate him especially after ms. cook!
He's a nice guy, even if he is more revealing about himself in class than he is helpful to his students.
Great teacher who did what he needed to do and a lot of the kids had fun
