I had a horrible experience w/her. She beat down my self esteem w/harsh comments & even worse w/that red pen. If she doesn't like you, look out because she will literally make the rest of the school year hell. People who cheated were rewarded w/kind smiles & insincere chit chat & those she didn't like were rewarded w/spit in their face from her yelling & insults. People think its funny when they aren't on the receiving end. I literally dreaded going to that class & hope she's rotting somewhere.
My name is Sandra and I was a student in Ms. Arcuri's Government class circa 2003? 2004? Anyway, I promise all of you struggling in her class right now, you will benefit so much from her class if you survive it and take it seriously. I didn't understand why she instructed the class to watch Meet the Press or go to local community board meetings but it opened up new worlds. I wrote her a thank you note a few years ago when I was working for a politician and got a lovely reply from her. Serious!
She is strict. She is mean. She is everything you would hate from a teacher. She legitimately yelled at me for closing a window. I sit right next to the window and it was around DECEMBER so the cold winds were making me sneeze and have a runny nose. She glares at me and then repeatedly calls on me to answer questions and gives me 2 seconds to answer them. If I don't answer in two seconds, she marks a 'unprepared' for me. However, she knows her material but she seriously needs to chill...
She need EVERYTHING to go her way. she also give wrong information. she is everything you DON'T want in a teacher. I know in ranting, but she is just a horrible teacher. its awesome she just got fired
very strict teacher, and everything has to go according to her. but then again, i believe she is fair. no doubt she hates some students more than others, just dnt get on her bad side
Shes harsh, but fair. She has a short temper, but doesn't lower your self esteem. SHES BACK IN TECH GUYS. No, but compared to who I got this term after Arcuri, Arcuri is alot more calm.
Apparently she's gone. Very bad teacher. Doesn't teach, only terrorizes. After I realized that a horrible teacher she was, I stopped going to class. I self studied and received a 98 on the regents. I was the highest in her class, proof that she does not teach even to pass the regents, which is what she's supposed to do. She dropped my GPA dramatically and cost me a scholarship resulting in a loss of over $2000 in my college semester. Glad to know she's gone, and others wont have to suffer her ra
You really have to work hard in her class. Tests are alright so long as review the material. The essay (on her tests) may be hard to write since she cares about the content AND spelling/grammar. Make sure your homeworks are thorough and make outlines; it helps. Oh, you gotta be able to ignore all her shouting at the people who don't know the answer to her questions too. Try not to get on her bad side or she'll pick u on for year, usually for questions nobody knows and you'll get yelled at.
I agree that I don't think a teacher has to emotionally put down a student in order for them to succeed. Instead of giving constructive criticism on essays, she just goes and writes a bunch of sarcastic comments that don't help at all in her intimidating red pen. In class, when she calls on you, she gives you half a millisecond to answer and if you're not quick enough, she'll come up to your desk, lean on your desk, get up in your face or she'll give you an unprepared. Who hired her?
i dont believe that a teacher needs to literally be putting her students down in order for them to succeed. That is just the easier way to do it. A great teacher would try to work with peoples emotions instead of completly ripping out any love children had for a subject in exchange for high grades. It truely feels like she is whoring out history... I had a 99 average in global and loved it to death. Now i struggle to pass every test due to the fact that i just cant stand the material anymore.
This class requires a tremendous amount of participation and effort. She loves to put students on the spot to answer questions and then give them "unprepared-s" when they don't answer correctly. Even though I can still hear her screaming and see her charging across the classroom in my head, I don't think i've ever learned more history from any other teacher.
I know her class is intense. It's not a hard class in terms of workload, yes her homework does take a while, but the content is pretty easy to understand. She does yell a lot and can put you down at times, but she is a very good teacher and knows her stuff quite well. She is really funny and is sweet. Trust me, she'll like you if you do the work and PARTICIPATE. I got a 90 in the class, with mediocre tests grades. Do all your homework! seriously. I love USH now and it's all thanks to her.
Lol..never had to work harder for another teacher, but i dont regret it at all. Shes as mean as everyone says but she really does have a sweet and even funny side if everyone does what theyre supposed to. Do all of your homework WELL and youre almost guaranteed a very high score. Tests are hard, but shes actually lenient in report card grading. I had about a 75% test grade average and got a 90 in her class. ily miss arcuri<3
wonderful teacher.. a bit scary at first, and she might spit on you while talking but..great great teacher i got high regents score
I graduated in 2003 and Laura Arcuri is one of the few teachers I remember. I know the woman yells and is tough but in some ways it's entertaining. Ms. Arcuri keep you on your toes and if you know your stuff it's not bad. Whats funny is when I think back to HS I can still hear her yelling ringing in my ears. Arcuri used to work in finance and became a teacher instead. I think thats kinda cool.If your looking to coast it sure as heck wasnt with her. I was a total slacker but I liked her class.
Lots of work....low grades...not the teacher you'll want, especially when you're college bound students. Prepared to get yelled.
It's funny... sometimes you would see the human side of her wonder how it might be if she had an ounce of respect for her students and just people in general. I completely disagree with the idea that it has to be this way so you can learn. In fact, I remember her but don't remember a thing a learned in her class. That to me is a sign that a teacher places more importance on his/herself than on the subject. That, to me, is not the sign of a good teacher
I've never studied for a test in all 11 years of my life in school, until I met this teacher. I can't say she's a good US history teacher, but she is a good life teacher. No other teacher has ever motivated me by failing me, pushed me, or completely changed how I study notes and review my work. To her, I have to give her props for changing the way I think about school. It is a shame I did not meet you earlier in life.
She is an awesome teacher! I learned a lot from her class despite of the tantrums that she throws sometimes. She only wants for us to learn. Go Team Arcuri! =)
i don't understand these people under me complaining to me that she's "evil" and "mean". i think the better term is, strict. she is only like that because she cares about us. she actually wants us to learn something and pass. sure she might lower your self-esteem to -1 but in the end, you actually learn a thing or two from her.
She is the mother of evil. Her tests are evil. Her classes are evil. Why is she so evil?
one of the best teachers at tech. but her tests are insane... but now i'd have her as a teacher over other boring history teachers at tech...
When she asked my class a question, none of us would answer. Then she started yelling at us, and I wanted her to stop so I raised my hand and answered the question. Then she yelled at me for not participating sooner.. I bet she finds the tiniest habits of her students and tries to use that excuse to yell at us. ;-;
Although I haven't met Laura Arcuri personally, I have heard that she is quite the unpopular teacher. However, I hear she knows her material and teaches it well. I disagree with the "teaches it well" part. If she is extremely rude and mean to her students while she teaches, then she teaches wrongly. The greatest teacher in existance would never have yelled at his students: Jesus. A good teacher is good both through material AND emotion. Show love to your students, and they'll learn even more.
LOL. Ms. Arucri is someone.. I've grown to love over the past few months. She's a brute, but she does it for our better. The funniest things I remember are her constant rants about how the Asians need English tutoring and how "it's a sad day in America." But, really guys! We all know we come out of her class as if we're coming out of a hell hole that taught us how to actually understand one of the suckiest concepts on earth- the study of History. :) I love you Ms. Arcuri, either or. xD!
One of the best teachers, yet one of the most scariest too. She is one of those good teachers who really want s you to learn. I have learned a lot, and every student should thank, and respect her for all the things she does for us.
If you're one of those simple "get-by'ers", then good luck to you. You will face a makeover. even if you're running a 98 on transcript, you'll be forced to work harder. Hey, i copied homeworks during lunch during my fresh & sophomore years, but im actually starting to study a lot harder 'at home' now. Ms arcuri yells alot, but it's never personal. she does so that you will learn
She's mean but she can definitely teach. All your hard work evenutally pays off. I got a 99 on the Regents and a 4 on the AP.
Ms. Arcuri will scare you into working your hardest. I think it's part of her plan in having students excell; however, she really knows her material. She is very unreasonable during class. Like many mentioned, she yells at you for reasons such as twirling your pen, having poor penmanship, having poor speech, giving the wrong answer etcetc. But at the end of class, she is much nicer and understanding. She once appologized to me (in a sincere tone) for scaring me.
the worst mistake i have ever done in my whole life was that i didnt transfer out of her class asap when i got her. i absolutely hate her. she failed me because i failed a test. i was absent on the test date cause i had a fever and flu but i came in with a doctors note. she gave me 20 minutes to make up a 45 minute test with 20 multiple choice questions and an essay. i got a 96 on the u.s. history regents and did almost all of the homework (each about 2 pages typed).
Ms. Arcuri is a character. You can't help but enjoy her snare comments and sarcastic attitude sometimes. She is very moody, and ocassionally fun an easy to deal with. Most of the time, however she crosses the line, and pokes fun at particular students ( the quiet Asian kids). If you participate from the start, she will like you for the entire year and not pick on you. Only strong students who are confident and outspoken can survive (not be bothered much) in her class. Simply put....PARTICIPATE!!
Probably the hardest teacher that I have. Which is fine and all, because she is doing more then teaching American History. I have her for the AP class and she is very knowledgable at history. Though admittedly not a people person, she is great when it comes to teaching. Strict, and a lot of hard work, but I'm confident that because of her I'll get a 100 on the Regents and a 5 on the AP.
I graduated, but I will admit that while she is very scary and intimidating, she just wants you to learn. If you are prepared in her class, and participates once in a while, you should be ok. But she is a nice lady despite her yelling and everything. You learn a lot and appreciate her class afterwards.
Very, very scary lady. I have very little respect for her because I don't think it's necessary to intimidate your students to the point that they can't answer when called on. However, this woman knows her stuff. My best advice: make outlines that you bring to class everyday, they are extremely helpful and she loves people who participate. With that said, don't participate if you don't know the answer. She gets very agitated if you try and fail.
You definately have to be prepared for her class every single day. Make sure you read the textbook carefully and remember everything for her tests. She is very knowledgable about history and you'll learn alot. But she is quite strict, mean, and unpleasant. She yells a lot and makes people cry.
Very strict teacher who always yelled at students when they answered the questions wrong, arrived late, and didn't do homework. She expected students to know everything and be on their feet, which was good, but her constant reminders about late notes weren't necessary. If she just relaxed a bit, she would've been an alright teacher. Her teaching style made me do extra studying.
i came into her class expecting a total nutcase (from what i've heard) but she's actually a really good teacher in terms of how much you learn. she can be overly demanding but it really forces you to understand history & see the connections between everything in the past & now. (i thank her for my 99 on the regents) she has favorites (just people she's more lenient on because they are already good students), but it doesnt affect how she grades you from what i've experienced. work hard!
She's definitely the best teacher I've had so far, in terms of the material that you learn in the class. One thing she could improve on is to really stop yelling so much and even at the smallest mistakes. Not everyone is perfect and she shouldn't expect them to be. Overall though, even if her class wasn't enjoyable due to the constant yelling and high tension you get from it, it was a valuable experience. Just work hard in her class, do the right thing and you'll get high grades.
shes incredibly condescending, but you'll be forced to develop good learning habits since she has such high expectance from her students. she can be nice, just get on her good side, participate, and brush up your vocabulary.
I had her freshman year and I have her yet again...I hate how she dislikes you once you answer an opinion question with an opinion that differs from hers. I really, really despise her. She can be nice, depending on your race and gender. She has favorites.
she's ok.. if she likes you then you're pretty much set, she isnt that bad
she isnt too bad actually, if you get on her good side she offers to help you out.
There is never a correct answer to a question, she says you're never going to make it in life, study and pay attention and you'll at least do well on the Regents.
Man, does she ever have a set of lungs on her! If you don't participate, she yells at you. If you participate, she yells at you. Save the court case handouts, they REALLY help on the regent.
if she stoped yelling and insulting people, maby just maby the class could get through a whole lesson in one day.
I used to have students in AP US govt asking me for answers to their homework, while I got a 75 for Arcuri. An A is possible, but the details she wants us to have is unrealistic for a regular class.
I regret taking US History Honors and end up with Arcuri for a year :-(
she teaches with detail, but its beyond the scope of the US history regents tests. She's a good teacher if your the kind of student that will do good when your criticized constantly.
Its clear that she's not here to be your friend which hurts. She is though willing to help you academically if you ask (for the most part). The regents really is a breze after being in her class.
She's very demanding and sometimes unfair, but she does teacher you a lot. Just be prepared.
If you give the wrong answer or don't know the answer, you're given a ZERO for the day. Once you get marked unprepared once, she'll be targeting you for the rest of the year. Have fun, you're screwed!
She's a scary person sometimes, but you do learn everything you need and more. the regents exams are walks in parks after learning in her classes. I would recommend her if your the hardworking type.
she is pure evil. i usually get 80s-90s in history, and i'm getting a 65 or lower in her class. she hates people who well in her class. she also won't teach- you have to tell her answers.transfer out!
I think you guys are all wrong! she is the best teacher I ever had! I have been very succesfull in life so far because of her. So don't make her sound bad...SHE'S THE BEST!!!
If you get her for a teacher, just transfer out immediately! She looks at her students with contempt. Everyday, you would walk out of her class with low self esteem and wishing you shot yourself.
I gotta say, she is the worst teacher i have ever had. It is not because she is hard or anything, she is just a mean person and she gave me a 75...every other s.studies class at tech was a high 90!!!!
this woman hates students, she should not be allowed to teach. she derives joy from people failing, she cant take fault in her students not doing well. cold bitter unhappy, i hate her with a passion.
She is not that bad. Just don't look at her directly and she won't pick on you. Study her notes and read the textbook. Doing this will get you a good grade in her class.
My son was scared to death of her and complained constantly but I noticed that his homework came back with detailed feedback. He worked hard and, in the end, she gave him a good grade.
Ok people are saying that she scares you into learning, but is that the point?! There are good teachers out there that aren't scary and they teach well :P
I had her 4 semesters in a row....She memorized my name called me by my last..sat me at the same seat in the same room every time. Haunting and chilling, but non-the-less memorable. She'll scare you into learning...she made this person cry one time =/
this woman is EVIL.man, she is so EVIL. she complains that we dont parrticipate, but she yells at everyone who does participate. then when people tell her why they dont participate, she YELLS that she doesnt bite. well, you sure are barking a lot and i already hear enough of that at home and i dont want to deal with it at school, too. AND she wastes my time to get to my other class by calling me up just to tell me i missed a homework. yeah, i know. i was there.
I had Ms. Arcuri in Spring 2001 for Global History 4. It was the second term of my freshman year. Everyday I would run to her class just to not be late. I was so stressed in her class. Shes a superb teacher, but its just too much. Everybody is afraid that she'll yell at any moment. I received a 93 on the Global History Regents and I credit it all to her. As others have said, you'll appreciate her class much more once you are done with it. I will never forget her or her teaching methods!
I have to say that this woman was probably one of the most amazing history teachers i ever had. Sure you hate her class while you are in it but after having her twice for honors american and going of to college it has made me realize how much i really got form her class. She really prepared me for the type of work that i encountered in college. If you happen to get her put up with the yelling, study really hard, and consider yourself lucky for being able to have such a great oppurtunity.
Mean, SCreams for no reason, little hw, usually every night but only about two questions. moderate mult choice sections on test, but killer essay parts, they have to be perfect for anythign near a good grade.
I really don't know what to say about her, one day I hate her, the other she's alright. In terms of tests, she is the least forgiving teacher I've ever had. She expects us to memorize all 50 pages of her notes for her essays, or else it won't be "detailed" enough. Also, this is not english class, why are you penalizing us for spelling mistakes? I can assure you that you weren't perfect growing up either. Her excessive yelling is more annoying than it is scary.
haha i love arcuri. her class is hard but i learned so much from her. hers is the only class where i actually learned something about history in six years of having social studies. she's a lot nicer this term. i think her yelling is very effective like some kid said we learn because we're too scared not to know the stuff. i've never gotten an unprepared in her class so far. the only complaint is her hwk. she doesnt give a lot but ugh we have to be so detailed and stuff.
very scary, had nightmares but i got a 99 of the history regents
Slightly frightening. I mean, school is supposed to be educational, structured, a lot of things... its not supposed to be unpleasant or scary. I had a headache 4 oout of every 5 days I had her... she just yelled a lot. HOWEVER, I did learn in that class... I just didn't enjoy a single minute of it.
Her class is very structured and you do learn a lot. You get so scared of her that you actually make an attempt to learn the stuff so she won`t yell at you.. She yells a lot!!! i feel kinda bad for her sometimes cuz it must be sad to always be in a bad mood.
what is wrong with this woman!? she yells at everything! she would give you an "unprepared" when you dont know the answer to her question. she likes to put "See Me" or say "see me after class!" when she thinks you do poorly on the homework! (and you will most likely get yelled.) she takes out on the students when she's in a mood! (especially 1st period)...there's too much to say! good luck if you get her! i suggest you to get a program change! no kidding. good luck!
Ms. Arcuri is very nice to us. She is inspiring but strict at the same time.
Her class isnt as bad as everyone says it is, it may be challenging but thats the way to learn. Her class is fine and she is somewhat considerate in assigning homework. The only thing that I can't stand is the fact that she would yell at the smallest mistake. I'm pretty sure that the reason many kids do not participate is because of her yelling. If she stops yelling so much she would be the perfect teacher for this class. Mr.Ostrin has a class much like her's but without the constant screaming, you learn.
She is an amazing Social Studies teacher, I learned so much from her class. Her honors class was difficult but rewarding in the end.
I think shes a good teacher. She may be hard but hey i got a 93 on the regents.
