She is a smart lady, but a poor teacher. Mrs. Esslinger assigns a large amount of pointless busywork and grades it harshly. She is also very hypocritical about attendance- she will yell at students for missing school for sports or a field trip, yet she and her forensics club take field trips and miss school very often. The class is unhelpful, boring, difficult, and hellish.
She may be the best teacher I've ever had. The connection she was able to form with me and the rest of the class was truly jaw dropping. When I visit Syosset high school, she will be one of the only teachers I will miss- Srini Jigglypuff Kumar
Mrs. Esslinger was my English teacher some 30+ years ago. She was among my very favorite teachers. I'm rating her as a parent because I can't remember how much homework she assigned or how hard her tests were.
What I remember is how incredibly engaging her classes were, how dedicated she was to developing in us a love of literature, how open minded she was, and how much she cared about her students. She loved us, particularly those who showed interest and appreciation. Phenomenal lady. A++
The savage. Nuff said
She's nice and in ap lit she doesn't really give much work besides readings just don't get on her bad side and do all the work.
Here's a view from a student of Ms. Esslinger's nearly 40 years ago. She was hard on me, and I was on her; God knows I wasn't a favorite. I didn't want a role model, and I didn't want some English teacher to direct my reading, MY writing, and my communication style. But in my gray years (and hers), I owe her a real debt. I don't meet many people who can discuss Calvino or Garcia Marquez with any clarity, but I can. And it's not because I'm some intellectual jewel. Learn from her while you can.
Be prepared to do annotations the whole year. It drives everyone crazy. She's very knowledgeable but intimidating. She's nice one on one but does play favorites a lot and will point you out. Also, never not do homework she will be so mad at you. You don't want her mad. Her courses are very boring also.
The worst teacher I have ever had. She's not a dumb person but she discourages creative thinking and wants you to do it her way all the time. Plays favorites. She is an intimidating, pessimistic woman who will control your life. Switch out ASAP.
old crazy cat lady that gives quizzes on a public speaking textbook, btw the quizzes are incredibly hard
She's very knowledgeable and her classes were never boring. However the work she assigns is very monotonous, time consuming, and boring. But in terms of grading, she's fairly lenient if you do your work on time and participate in class with INTELLECTUAL ideas/opinions. Yes she did put people on spot, but thats only because they brought up the most unintelligent and incoherent remarks.
She is a horrible teacher. She is constantly putting you on the spot and putting you down
Everyone is scared of her, she literally will take charge of ur life, call ur house daily and u wont be able to do anything about it because of the subtle remarks she makes that bring absolute terror. Honestly if she doesnt like u, ur screwed, extremely elitist and although she will question ur commitment she will make u drop everything and do something thats only convenient for her. Regardless, shes extremely smart and knowledgeable and if she likes u, u will learn a tremendous amount.
I actually don't have her as a teacher... i just know her through Forensics. She does pick favorites, even on the team, but not necessarily those who do well. She just cares about dedication. I heard she's a tough teacher/grader and doesn't really encourage creative thinking. I don't agree with that, but if you care about doing well, just do it her way. You guys should really give her a break. She's been working here over 40 yrs.
Ms. Esslinger was my teacher in the 70s, probably before most of you were born. She was young and fiercely smart. She didn't take any crap, and I certainly tried to hand out some--I considered myself rather fierce and smart,
A beautiful talented woman, She is an expert in her field, Although she is intimidating at times, aren't all powerful confident women?
HORRIBLE! I cannot stress this point enough SHE IS A TERRIBLE TEACHER! Yes you learn a good amount in her class, but her teaching/grading mentality is "I'm right, you're wrong. Deal with it, B"
Rude, judgmental, and generally obnoxious. She will tell you your opinoin is wrong. She is a terrible teacher whose grades depend entirely on if she likes you or not. Avoid her class at all costs.
don't EVER get in a car with her. I was in a car with her during tournament week and she went the wrong way on a ONE WAY street. the police was right behind us. she got out of it using speechskillz
Wake up folks, this is one teacher who has coached some amazing talents on their way to the top: Idina Menzel, Adam Pascal, Natalie Portman, other Broadway actors and actresses also... I mean, c'mon gang, she might have a str
She gives ridiculous amounts of work, believes her opinion is the only one that matters, and never gets anything done. She picks excellent books, but gives impossibly hard quizzes. Also, she just gives you the grade she "thin
I had Mrs. Esslinger in '02/'03. She was one of my favorite, most memorable teachers. Her class was challenging, but she really made us work and think. She is one of the few who truly cares about teaching.
Haha what a unique person! She does pick favorites,is somewhat judgmental, strong willed, and very strict. But she definitely is a good person at heart. It's a big plus for you to get on her good side-she's really a great teacher.
Had Mrs. E. in 1970. She encouraged us to get out of our shell and took the class out to manhattan theater I now see bdwy shows every chance i get and live in los angeles.. Rzabb
The BEST teacher ever! I have learned so much in her class. work hard and she will love you. She truly has a heart of gold
Well Lydia a very mixed character. She has her pros and cons. As a teacher, she is opionated which is no good, but she is nice in most cases and fair when it comes to grading.
Its obvious she picks favorites, and I'm one of them, but I think 11 Honors is awsome with her.
Tends to play favorites, doesn't really encourage creative thinking, likes people to interpret everything HER way.
Heard "interesting" stories about her back in the day.
Lydia!!! What a character. Well, I happened to be one of her favorites, so maybe you'll take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I thought AP Lit was awesome with her.
A real class act. Not an easy teacher or coach, but makes learning and the pursuit of excellence a pleasure. I will never forget her. She is truly special.
A teacher I will never forget. She is tough but deep inside is a heart of gold. The harder you work the more she cares. She's a forensics goddess.I'll miss her!
Has a tremendous problem separating her personal feelings from the classroom. She clearly treats her senior play and forensics people very differently.
people get hung up that she does have favorites... but she is a great teacher who is passionate about english.. yes you will like her after going to college
the queen of favoritism. very hung up on appearances and manners and superficial stuff like that.
The kind of teacher you once hate, then love after getting to college. Never thought I'd say this - I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR MRS. E.
eh..esslinger..i cant say i liked her..go for either Stolz or Miss.N people!!! dont get blank either!
