Mr. Harelstad is a very nice guy, and it is clear that he is interested and knowledgeable about Biology. However, there is a major problem many students face in his class- he seems to put very little effort into teaching the class. He takes his tests from online, reads off of the screen, his lectures are confusing and off-topic and he provides no instruction in the labs. I know he could improve by planning out his lessons better, and give students more guidance through classwork.
He simply read what the powerpoints said, rarely if at all elaborating into the material that we were studying. In addition, he expected us to learn through the textbook, not through class, telling us that he wanted this to be a "self-directed learning experience." He frequently misspoke, confusing the class, and also had times where he didn't remember something, usually a key word or name that we were currently studying, stalling the class and detracting from our ability to learn the material.
Horrible teacher and not a nice person. When he lectures on a subject he expects memorization of the content without doing anything to reinforce it. If you have him for general bio, be prepared for a 10 minute rant every day about how stupid you and your classmates are and how technology is making our generation lazy. Does a terrible job explaining concepts and is incredibly snide and condescending when students ask questions. I recommend switching out of his class if possible (it's usually not)
If you pay attention he is a good teacher.
Pretty mediocre teacher, teaches more about life skills than biology.
Mark Harelstad is a super nice man, but a terrible teacher. He is on the other hand a very good salesman. The one time i'm trying to learn harelstad decides to pitch us a sale about dishwasher parts. I swear the whole class learned more about the secret room in sears then the human reproductive system. This man is very confusing. Long story short, decent teacher at best
AP Bio with Mr. Mark Harelstad sucks. I have no idea why he's still teaching AP Bio.
Doesn't teach much biology, but rather tries to give life lessons. He'll start off talking about something, then he'll start drifting into thing irrelevant to what we're learning. One time he was talking about mitosis, and then 5 minutes later was talking about how tough the real world is and how he had a friend who was selling toothpaste at one point, but is really rich now. His demeanor just bothers me, too. He says "K" after every sentence and just whines half the class. Horrible Teacher.
Okay. Mr. Harelstad is a god awful teacher. This class could be Arabic for all I know. He is extremely unhelpful and unapproachable. If you ask him if you can turn in homework the next day, he'll pull some bs and take points off. His tests are impossible and averages are around 70%. I don't understand anything that he says, and his powerpoints (which are taken directly from the publisher) are just blocks of text. If you have him, DROP. If you are going to have him, MOVE TO IRAQ. God help us :(
Absolutely horrible at teaching - he should not be teaching biology. He is a waste of EHS funds. I'd give him a zero for helpfulness, knowledgeable, and clarity if it was possible - but alas I can only give a one.
he's such a sweetheart, loved having him as a teacher (:
Horrible horrible teacher for AP Bio. He read straight off the power-point almost every day. He's very helpful when you come after school to ask questions, however.
The problem with his lectures is that he uses the exact terminologies for what hes talking about, so if you want to get anything out of the lectures, you need to read before class.
I liked him. And you come out of the class with lots of inside jokes.
Students need to be serious about biology and willing to work.He treats you very much like professors in college, you are responsible for your own learning.
Okay. Well, he is a pretty good teacher and okay at explaining things, but the thing is it gets really confusing. His tests are also pretty hard. Basically ok.
I do not like him! Enr. bio is hard because he does not know how to teach it, and everything I learn is by myself
Hi, my name is Mr. Mark HArlstad and I will be your biology instructor for the day.
