Richard and I spoke regarding my daughter's ability to succeed in the class initially as she never took a CS class, as I am also a computer science graduate and wanted to engage where needed. I was hoping we would communicate if there were concerns. I contacted Richard once when my I heard a student TA shared her low grades with other students. I didn't hear anything until she received a D at the end. Richard kindly responded he was sorry not to connect, but it didn't change her grade.

I truly believe this teacher does not deserve a job at Amador. He does not teach at all and while computer science can be learned on your own, getting the syntax down can be hard. He never helped me and pushed me away from computer science, and it was only in college, did I get a professor who actually cared about his students and taught to the class. To anyone who thinks Computer science isn't for them, take it from me, that Mr. Hanson is not a good teacher, and you should still try CS later on

People ask you sometimes, "Do you have any regrets?"
well my answer would be that taking this class is the biggest regret I've ever had
Honestly, he rarely teaches and he roasts students for not knowing something when called on.
Also i wish we had more points in the gradebook because were almost done with first semester and we barely have 60 points in the gradebook. We do alot of work in class but nothing in the gradebook. Also the tests are very hard

Not helpful. Teaches close to nothing, and treats his students terribly. Scared multiple kids in my period out of wanting to major in Computer Science.

He explains things if you don't know. I feel like I am actually learning in his AP Comp Sci class. I do have experience, but not Java. I don't know what everyone else is talking about.

Does not have a textbook, does not give homework, and does not have any sort of structure in his class. If you do not know programming dont think that he will teach it to you because he wont. He hardly lectures and usually just gives coding projects for you to figure out on your own, and often times if you have a question he will belittle it, and half answer it. Do not take this class there are far better teachers than him.

I would definitely recommend taking regular compsci first. He gives us basic outlines for projects and will help you if you need it, but he tries to get you to figure out assignments on your own first. I haven't had to look at any outside help this year. The pacing is good, and the tests were pretty simple.

If you don't have any prior knowledge of java, I recommend not taking this class because he won't teach you anything. I have been trying to self-study this entire semester and I'm failing the class. You won't learn anything and this class is a horrible way to be introduced to computer science. If you really like computer science take the class somewhere else, because Mr. Hanson will not teach you anything.

He really knows his stuff. For me it helped a lot to watch his warm up problems which would take up the entire class period. If you're not paying attention to the warmups, that's why you're failing the class. He designs the warmups so that they encompass everything you would learn in notes. I actually remember the things I learned in that class. Also his signature is HUGE.

Mr. Hanson is great, I've had him for Computer Science and now for AP Computer Science. I've been reading most of the entries here and most of them seem to miss the point of his help and lectures, the class isn't structured so you read some notes and memorize them like you do in other classes, he structures the class so you figure out the logic on your own and learn how to well learn on your own like you do in the real world. The fact that it has a very different approach makes it difficult.

hanson doesn't really teach. you MUST be a self-directed learner (or a natural engineer) if you want to pass the AP exam. he looks like a better version of george clooney :D

I suggest you switch out to a more competent teacher if possible. He knows a lot about the subject, but clearly can't teach well. I usually end up learning out of the book. Incredibly difficult tests.

I have him for AP computer science and the class is ridiculously hard. most of my classmates already know Java, but anyone who doesn't have prior experience is completely lost. I have to learn everything on my own at home, because Hanson cannot teach at all. He might know the info really well, but he isn't very good at teaching it clearly to students. I will be lucky to pass the AP exam this May, given his subpar teaching skills. Otherwisely cool person.

nice guy, no doubt, but his teaching methods are just so janky. everyday is a lecture with many useless, confusing rants in between. his intent is to teach the reasoning behind the math we're doing, but he explains it in a terribly poor way. sometimes his methods of solving problems conflict with the book, and its hard to tell which method we should use because they occasionally produce different answers! his quizzes and tests are designed so you “apply” what you learned, but often they’re just super
