I had Mr.Friedland for Functional Programming and Objected-Oriented Programming and he was a great teacher. He invests a lot of time to make his lectures detailed and thorough and is very patient when answering questions. He cares about his students and prioritizes learning, which makes class difficult, but doable.
He started teaching AP Calc AB this year and my experience in his class has been wonderful. The tests are hard, yes, but he is probably the best teacher I've ever had in terms of knowledge of the subject (Calc in this case). He also doesn't waste time talking about personal problems like so many other Paly teachers. He will beat you at poker and at wiffle ball so be ready. :D Work hard y'all and he'll respect you.
Awesome teacher. Can't recommend enough. He treats his students like adults and he really knows what he teaches.
Because he treats his students very maturely, he also won't chase after you. If you want/need help, you'll get it, but he's not going to hound you to give it.
Also gave us icecream tacos on the final day. Major plus.
Love ya scott.
Mr. Friedland has a keen sense of how smart his students are. If you're not trying your best, he'll know. However, it is up to you to take full advantage of everything he offers. He's tech-savvy, he posts the notes on the website diligently, and he's one of the most flexible teachers I've had. BUT CHECK HIS TWITTER FEED REGULARLY OR YOU WILL MISS IMPORTANT UPDATES.
As with all math teachers, his tests will have you ripping your balls off if you didn't study. So STUDY, DAMMIT.
I had Friedland for AP Statistics and damn he knows his stuff. He's a really good teacher, but you can't slack off at all and like everyone says, the tests are hard. In class he's really funny and connects with the students so well, and outside of class, he's always there to help you get better. He impacted my college major decision, and now I want to pursue research in which I can design experiments and use them for statistical analysis. Overall an amazing and inspiring teacher!
Mr. Friedland is a great teacher his programming class is very well structured and expectations are clear. He grades fairly and is always very reasonable to students, and has good humor. Class is difficult but he's highly qualified to teach a hard subject like programming
Mr Friedland is pretty nice, I have him for Functional Programming. He teaches in a lecture based format, which works for some people, but not others. Mr Friedland generally tries to help you do your best in the class, but he does make his test tough, so beware.
For lectures, it is much easier to understand when written and solved out (with students developing questions) rather than read, otherwise it is equivalent to reading a textbook blindly. As for finals reviewing, calculus teachers are going through the examples we have done throughout the year on the board rather than giving us 2 periods to work on a packet and then reading the key for it. There is a huge comprehension gap b/w the Calculus clases and AP STATS because differences such as this.
AP STATS IMHO it is not in the best interest of the students to have everything from class examples to homework answers all pre-typed and simply read off of. While it saves lots of time, It would be far more beneficial, if similarly to EVERY other math class at PALY, HE COULD USE THE WHITE BOARD AND SOLVE PROBLEMS STEP BY STEP. I feel there is a huge missed oppurtunity to actually engage the students in the course rather than just teaching by the book.
He is a nice, reasonable, knowledgeable guy, but I wish the class wasn't by the book as much. He teaches right to the test, but i wish he could make the class a bit more exciting- even using "COLOR" and "powerpoints" would help (said no one before). Also instead of just reading the answers for the homework it would be helpful if he could do them out on the board or overhead like in a regular math class.
Re: AP Stats. Nice and funny sense of humor. Does Powerpoints, posts online. My son was an "A/B" student in AB math lane and dropped his class after bombing the first test, which was very difficult.Class might be more appropriate for BC lane students
Had him for AP Stats. He is VERY knowledgeable about stats - it's clearly his favorite class to teach. While his lectures do get boring sometimes, he can be funny sometimes! (He's not really arrogant - he just jokes about it). Won't tolerate BS.
Mr. Friedland is amazing. He knows the curriculum COLD, and is a much better source then the textbook. His lecture notes have gone through 13 years worth of revisions. Very personable and funny during class. His pseudo-arrogance jokes are always fun.
He gives 10 pages of review on every test, 35 pages of finals, grades unfairly, and is bad at teaching. He is arrogant, thinking his class is hard, and will not listen to the opinions of students.
AP Stats with Friedland is one of the most useful courses taught at Paly, both for and post-college. AP Stats should be a required course for all Paly grads. He is extremely knowledge, helpful, and able to communicate statistics in simple ways (surprisingly difficult for most college professors to do the same).
he sucks at teaching analysis. I was only able to get by because i studied my **** of every night a week before the test.
Really helpful in preparing you for the AP Statistics test
I wish if I gave you a good review you would give me an A. Really hard tests! Otherwise, this is like every other math class.
I really hate math in general, but Mr. Friedland makes the class somewhat interesting with all his jokes. He's hilarious and his teaching style is really clear. Although he is really hard!
hard of course but it's worth it in the end. His sense of humor makes it somewhat enjoyable for a first period class but don't mess with him because he will mess with you right back
he actually is a pretty smart teacher and knows his stuff really well...but he does have somewhat of hard tests..
Mr. Friedland is outstanding - very clear, very smart, appropriately demanding and a lot of charisma. He worked hard to get my son through the AP exams.
funny guy which is great b/c i stay awake. he makes fun of me the most out of our class but it's funny b/c he's super nice outside of class and just a smart guy in general
A statistics teacher who really understood his field. A very funny man, but his humor can be a bit excessive.
Arguably the worst math teacher at paly and unluckily i had him twice!
hes a cool guy and once you get to know him can be very helpful, and i dont know about u guys but notes online are very nice
good teacher, but his sense of humor can be a little vicious. if you work hard he'll respect you. his teaching style is VERY clear (better than lim)
Mr. Friedland is tough, but if you give effort, you can earn his respect.
he's cool as a person....needs to lighten up as a teacher and be nicer
Needs to lighten up and just become a nicer person in general.
Pretty tough, pretty fair. Teaching is clear and straightforward, if uncreative.
Notes posted online, same as in class overheads. Reads directly off them, rarely deviates from them. Not very interesting. Definitely needs to lighten up.
Good, effective teacher. Difficulty is based on whether or not you do your homework.
Don't like that class so much... he's okay, pretty smart, but he needs to loosen up. Lighten up on those jokes please!
his great sense of humor makes class fun and keeps students attentive so they don't fall behind.
Passionate about math, but too sensitive, takes things too personally, lighten up!
