Steve was/is? an amazing teacher and friend. He deserves a lifetime teaching award, no doubt. Through high school, Duke, and law school, Steve was the best teacher I had. Many thought physics was hard, but he made it easy. Thanks so much Steve!
Class of '92. Great man and a great teacher. He tried to teach you how to learn and apply that to every thing you do. He also made learning very fun. The reason I gave less than 5 stars for easiness is because the subject wasn't easy, and he expected you to work. But that's what you had to do to learn the subject. Mr Mathis became my gold standard for measuring other teachers. Very few ever measured up to his level of excellence as an educator
Mathis is one of the best teachers I ever had. Very good man. I could always tell he truly cared about his students. I'm greatful I got to learn physics and AP Physics from him. I hope one day I
as others have said, best teacher ever. am very glad to see he's still teaching, and getting awards for it. ben arthur, '88.
He was the best teacher I ever had, no question. I graduated in 2000. He taught me far more than my college courses. On top of that, he as well as his class was incredibly fun
My favorite teacher during high school. I am an 04 graduate and am glad to see that Mathis is still teaching.
Good sense of humor, knows the subject, is a great teacher. He also makes his own boomerangs... he is one hoopy frood.
Seriously, best teacher in the world. Don't know a soul who doesn't love him. Taught me well enough to major in physics at Princeton, without sacrificing clarity for everyone. Just plain amazing.
in'84, I'd Mr. Mathis for physics. I love what he taught. Plus, he cares so much for his students & helps them to learn, discover how the world is working 'by law of physics.' A dedicated teacher.
Great physics teacher who does everything he can to help you understand the material. Great guy all around.
