Johnston is the best math teacher at AMHS. Once I figured out I had to do my homework, even though he doesn't check it, everything got better and I learned more from that man than anyone. He made me responisble for my own work, which took some getting used to. Some of my classmates never got it. Negative comments below are ridiculously unfair. magnet has gone downhill since the move to the new campus. thank goodness for him.

I had Mr. Johnson for precalulus and calculus. He was hard and didn't give to many grades but he knew what he was doing and he made me work and I made a 5 on the AP test. He was a great teacher but I didn't realize it until I was in college. Comments below are unfair (sounds like my mom) and he didn't play the guitar enough IMO. He is underrated if anything.

He is a nice guy, but I hate his teaching style. He gives ok notes, but the assessments are nothing like the notes--much harder. He wants to be the cool friend who plays the guitar more than the teacher. He gives few grades and one low grade will drop you dramatically. I am glad to be done with him and the year. Go for Padgett if you can, best decision you will make. Also, very slow grader.

Johnston gives too few assignments. Consequently, one low grade places grades in peril. There is not a sense of pacing or series of smaller tasks culminating in a bigger assessments. Students never realize what they do not know fully until after the test. He seems lazy, doing what is easiest for himself without regard to what's best for students. He acts like he is a college professor and doesn't need to do any assessments beyond a midterm or final. He does as little as possible.

He is a good teacher, but he tells stories a lot and doesn't teach the whole time, making homework a bit difficult. I didn't feel very prepared for the tests all the time. You don't get many grades.
