Mr. Van Winkle teaches Biology, AP Chemistry, Physics, and AP Physics 1. Despite his constant boosts in class saying that he is a successful teacher, he is not. Many students despise his teaching methods, which can be seen as confusing and awkward. I understand that he tries and yes he does teach the material, he refuses to understand the needs of students. If you take any AP classes with him, make sure to get a study book. Overall, he is a good person (and advisor), but not a good teacher.

Honestly he is a very nice person. I like that he really tries. However he is just not good at teaching during class time. When I approached him ast science lab, he was much more thorough and in depth.
His biggest problem is at he can't cover everything or even the major topic on the tests. I had ap Chem with him and out of the 6 major topics, I would say he hit the lalast 3 such as equilibrium, acid and bases, and kinetics during April.
His labs aren't too hard, just time consuming.

There is no doubt that many students dislike Mr. Van Winkle because of his vagueness of teaching. I agree with them. No matter in AP Chemistry or AP Physics, he would not emphasize which part is important in AP exams rather went through all knowledge. Therefore, some AP kids, without self studying or being tutored, might have hard time doing well in the AP exams. However, you must go to his science lab after school if you do not understand the things he teaches. Overall, GOOD TEACHER.

He went on tangents at times but he is clearly knowledgeable but this class was very difficult for me not because of the material, rather he sometimes had trouble communicating or explaining processes leading to confusion.

In my opinion, he's a very cool teacher once you know how to talk to him. He'll teach but it best if you learn from the book instead since his lecture is so damn confusing, you'll be daydreaming in a matter of second. Be prepare to take notes on whatever come out of his mouth cause I guaranteed you, 80% of them is going to be on the test. Other than that have fun in his class and try to be friendly with him or he'll degrade you down faster than the acceleration of gravity :).

Had him for both AP Physics and chemistry. Chemistry was an easy-going class if you paid attention in class and did your work. His AP class however, was a disappointment to me. He never taught material we needed for the AP test itself, just general stuff. He thinks we understand all the concepts for it, but only a handful of people in the class actually care enough to study for the AP test. The rest of the class has given up, saying that physics was a lost cause

Van Winkle is awesome. Those who have problems with him are those who try to turn things in after they're due or those who he refuses to let manipulate him. Thank you, Mr. Van Winkle.

Well, he's like the only best Chemistry teacher around that actually teaches, even though he's boring. I think he teaches more clearly than learning from the book.
