He cares little for his students. He bullies, chastises a definitely plays favorites. He expects collage proficiency yet does not give any instruction on the curricular. Why go to school if I'm supposed to know it already. Gosh he is the worst human being I have ever been in contact with.

Smailes is a great teacher. The students who don't like him are the ones that don't do their work and don't pay attention in class. He has great respect for the students who are willing to learn and ask for help. He's one of few teachers who doesn't tolerate the laziness and disrespect high school students seem to always carry with them. I am thankful for his harsh grading because it has grown me as a writer immensely. I have a lot of respect for him as a teacher.

Tom Smailes is conceited and is not a good teacher. It seems that he teaches for self gratifying reasons rather than to help students learn and think. His methods of teaching out of packets he hands out do not work and make me, the student feel like he is telling us he has more important things to deal with than helping his students and that the packet he handed out should be help enough. He also favors athletes and expects an asinine amount of work.

Yes apparently some people think he was helpful; I mean I agree he's not 100% useless as a teacher. So to the people who said he was great, I'm glad you learned something from him. But the rest of us who gave him bad reviews just think we could have learned much more from him if he was a little smarter and a little less obsessed with himself.
I also think he treats girls a little inappropriately at times but I guess a lot of teachers do that these days.

As a former Smailes' student, college has been much more ejoyable and successful due to his teaching and mentoring. I've read some of the negative posts, and I've come to a few realizations: 1. Some of you could not handle the challenge. 2. Some of you can't complete a sentence or words for that matter so you could not have been paying much attention in his class. 3. Some of you are just "soft."

Mr Smailes is a condescending a?#. If you question him or say anything negative he gets really defensive and will punish you the rest of the semester. Don't really feel like i am learning as we are ju

I don't know why everyone is so harsh on Smailes. He has helped me and others improve their writing style and test taking skills. He is a wonderful teacher, who cares immensely about his students.

Really an arrogant person. Not interested in helping students, just belittling them and criticizing without giving any contructive help or suggestions. Definitely plays favorites.

He gives the impression of knowing what he's talking about, but doesn't really. However, his AP class will absolutely help you on the AP exam and throughout college. Overall, an awful lit teacher but a great comp teacher.

I have nothing but respect for Smailes. I was not "popular" but he and I got along just fine--its not about who is cool or not, but if he gives you a hard time, give it back! He will respect you for your mind and your wit.
