Interesting topics, interesting class, even more interesting and wonky teacher. Keep up with your assignments, study for your tests, and pay attention in class (especially during lectures), and you'll be absolutely fine. As long as you just do the work, an A is very attainable. Worthwhile class overall.
For the AP European History class
Dr. Ackerman is an awesome teacher! He's so enthusiastic about his subject and his students :) The class in itself isn't too difficult--it's quite manageable for an AP course. You have to make sure you're on top of things because a lot of the class is discussion and it helps to know what you're talking about. Make sure you turn your work in on time, especially in the 4th quarter. Great class. Great teacher. Learned a lot :)
Powerful, flamboyant, extravagant, a great man, wonderful. What hasn't been said about Carl that hasn't already been said about Steve Jobs, Carl Sagan, and Barack Obama. Carl Ackerman is a great teacher. Period.
My reasons for taking AP European History were numerous. Firstly, to be an AP European History student is an enviable distinction, and one that I sincerely hope I shall attain. Secondly, Dr. Ackerman is quite the character; nay, a legendary figure whose glory soars above all others. The stars in my heaven posed as the sand beneath his feet. He, who dwelled in the sacred temple of knowledge, bestowed upon me the opportunity to scrutinize its very architecture. It's a great course!
Dr. Ackerman is obviously really knowledgeable when it comes to European/Russian history. Although part of the class is self-taught, when he gives us lectures and review notes, they are very helpful and prepare us well for the exam.
Carl Ackerman (or Carl Leopoldovich as we like to call him) is a legend among men. He knows more about history (specifically Russian history) than everything I know (or will ever know, for that matter), combined. He's a fun teacher, he always keeps things interesting, and he makes every class extremely enjoyable. I'd highly recommend taking any of his classes (but mostly Euro History through Russian Eyes).
Passionate. Eccentric. Knowledgable. Great teacher!
Happy, Knowledgeable, Enthusiastic, Animated, Cool, Helpful, Forgiving
Dr. Ackerman is a very nice and funny guy. A little eccentric but theres nothing wrong with that. He cares very much about his subject and his students and he loves talking about past students and people in the community. His Russian History class is very good and I learned lots through his teaching. One thing you should be aware of is that he is a hard grader. He grades his essays and major papers hard but there are other things in his class that are fairly easy can most people still end with A
While he tends to be old fashioned in teaching methods, (a lot of lectures, a lot of writing, students do practically nothing but show up) he is a good teacher and is VERY knowledgeable in his area. He is legitimately interested in the subject he is teaching and often touches upon subjects not often discussed. He has high expectations for his students and seems to legitimately care about their work, especially essays. Overall, a very good teacher, just make a point to read and keep up with work.
Russian History was not a difficult class. Using a variety of mediums to teach like film, novels, and the textbook, Dr. Ackerman cares about making the subject matter as engaging for his students. His passion for Russia and its history is evident throughout the class. There are a lot of assignments and readings, so prepare to take the time to do the homework.
He was very energetic in European History Through Russian Eyes. I loved the lectures that he gave, but I felt like there weren't enough of them. He definitely knows what he is teaching and often goes off on tangents explaining things related to the subject. Would enjoy having him as a teacher again.
I had a great time taking his class and definitely learned a lot. He is a great teacher and obviously extremely knowledgable on the subjects that he teaches. He brought a lot of humour to the class and made every day enjoyable. Although he does spend a lot of time advertising for the Pu'eo program and trying to recruit you to work there, I would definitely recommend taking a class with this teacher.
Dr. Ackerman is an awesome teacher to be around. In European History Through Russian Eyes, he taught us how to speak Russian and so much more about Russian culture. His bubbly and boisterous spirit was perfect to wake us all up for a 7:30 class. He is a pretty tough grader when compared to other teachers at Punahou but through conferencing, it is pretty easy to get an A in this class. I'd highly recommend just because of how great Ackerman is and he is like a walking history book.
AP European History is a really fun, worthwhile class. With a subject as extensive as European history, Dr. Ackerman does a great job of explaining events with precision and detail; you can tell how passionate he is about his subject. Additionally, his boisterous and friendly nature makes the morning classes so fun. Do yourself a favor, and take AP EURO!
AP EURO This class is completely self-driven. There was little if no instruction. A good 90% of our class was discussion within our groups. Perhaps this is helpful for some people but I definitely prefer to have a form of instruction. The very little instruction we received were usually base-level lectures that could be condensed into a five minute lecture. While in APUSH I felt relatively confident walking in to take the exam, we have done little in ways of preparing for the AP exam this year.
Great person, outstanding educator, wonderful teacher. I truly enjoyed the AP European History course he taught.
I had a great time in this class. I learned so much and really enjoyed everything we did, from screaming Otto Von Bismarck to Dr. A's way of calling on students with extreme enthusiasm. PLEASE finish your work!! Just do it and turn it in! You will not regret it!!!
Dr. Ackerman is approachable and knowledgeable about European history. I felt as though he graded fairly. I am more than satisfied with my grade in the class. I recommend Carl.
Ackerman was overall a pretty good teacher, definitely learned a lot. He's very knowledgeable about Russia and European history in general. He's also very eccentric, if that's not your thing the class might not be for you. Overall, I'd recommend taking one of his classes if you're passionate about history.
Not the most traditional of teachers but extremely knowledgable about the history.
Dr. A is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced teachers on campus. He knows his subject inside and out, will respond to student's questions right away via email or in class, and returns homework with thorough feedback within a week. He is outgoing, loud, and boisterous during lectures and is always joking with students, however, he is also very thoughtful and caring. You can tell that he really cares about his family and that he thinks deeply about what will be best for his students.
not concentrated enough about his students and doesn't take any advice given even when he's the one asking for it.
He definitely is loud and obnoxious. He also grades really hard, so make sure to study before you take an essay tests or DBQ's. He ragged on me for a while, and definitely does play favorites.
Challenging, but he will definitely prepare you for college. He knows his stuff and teaches it in funny and memorable ways. Take AP, don't be a pleb.
Pretty awesome teacher in general... A little too loud sometimes
Dr. Ackerman has a PHD in Russian History and European history. Last year 1/2 of his APEH class received scores of 5 on their AP tests. His 'favorites' are friends who do not get better grades.
He is a great teacher. He really loves his subject. If you are not outspoken in class you may feel left out, but if you speak up you will be recognised.
Uncle Carl is the most enthusiastic and hilarious teacher imaginable. His presence is overwhelming, and he is very accomodating...not to mention that he knows his history!
I was on the first floor directly below him during summer school...sounded like a war was going on.
Tough grader when it comes to essays. Very loud at times...can get really annoying. Nice guy though. Makes some bad decisions when assigning work occasionally
He's cool, and really like to teach, and is really loud. Just do the homework and you'll do fine. However, does tend to cater to his favorite students.
Dr. Ackerman is awesome! He is a little loud at times..but you get used to it. He is a great teacher who really cares about student's work
Dr. Ackerman is a very biased teacher who regularly gives his favorites better grades. He also doesn't know much about the subjects he teaches.
Extremely enthusiastic teacher! A little loud at times, but he makes things very interesting and fun! He is also very approchable and friendly outside class.
he's a funny teacher, so he keeps class interesting. he gives us time in class 'cause he takes into account our other courses.
he does play favorites a little bit, but he is a fun guy. loud, a little tiresome, but always passionate, which makes everything a lot more interesting than it would be without. he is a gem of a teacher, despite his flaws.
He seems to pay attention to certain people more than others, and it seems like he plays favorites!
very strange.. yet interesting teacher. i think hes awesome.
never had him for a teacher but did have him for a substitute. he is so much fun! wish i had him as a teacher. you guys are lucky!
He spits all over and is really annoying if you have to listen for more than 5 seconds. But I still seem to think he's cool. He's just inwardly cool.
Very knowledgable and experienced teacher with a very animated personality.
I got a couple of D+ on reports, but ended up with an A.
He can't teach. Talks a lot, he quite compassionate though.
Mr. Ackerman was one of the best teachers I've ever had.
Mr. A. Rocks! He made Current Hawaiian Politics awesome!
