Such a good teacher. Really sad to see him go. He knew so much about history, and the class was always fun.
I had him for Am World and I thought that he was one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is so knowledgeable in the topics we discuss, he makes class fun, and we learn so much without having to do pointless busy work. If you put a little effort into his class, you will find it to be a fun class with many hilarious anecdotes.
Before, I didn't like him because he'd always go on tangents and I didn't think was learning anything. His class has NO structure and it was hard for me to follow along and stay organized. After taking the AP, I have way more respect for him. When I wasn't sure on some questions, I found myself remembering little snippets of his tangents and discussions. His teaching method was surprisingly effective: he always told stories to help us remember. Turns out, I actually learned a LOT. Thanks Kummer!
DA BEST. Seriously take a class with him - you will not regret it. Such an awesome guy to get to know.
Had him for world history, and he clearly didnt know the first thing. I took ap euro at the same time, and for good portions of the year, i knew more than him. Gets sidetracked really easily. His writing assignments seem lengthy and challenging but most of the time u can either bs them, directly copy them from someone else, or not do them at all and turn it in 2 weeks late for no penalty
He is CHILL. Just make sure to study a reasonable amount for quizzes, because every point counts. He digresses a lot about current events and gov...he's probably great for gov or 20th century, but I didn't learn much about world history. =/
Ah Mr. Kummer. Easiest the oddest teacher I have ever had at TJ. There is absolutely NO structure, but we learn about stuff that actually matters. Be careful about the quizzes, there are so few grades a quarter that if you get 1 point off your screwedddd. He randomly goes off on tangents which are interesting but sometimes i felt like i was actually going to fail the SOL
he knows his gov better than his world history, he can get sidetracked if you mention a current event or something, or if you blatantly ask him to give you a gov lesson one day. very laid back, class is easy, but i feel like we didn't learn anything. i don't think he gives us tests. like our quarter exam was actually a quest.
If you set out to completely learn world history 100%, better off with sacks. if you dont want huge tests/daily 20 page reading/essays, this is the man. Kummer defines chill. Most students screw up cuz they get so used to the chillness of his class and dont study at ALL (its still possible to wing quizzes well). The only bad thing is he has like 90-120 points in a quarter, so every little assignme
The guy is nice, but he's a pretty bad teacher. It takes nearly half the class before we actually learn anything related to Government, and even then he goes off on many tangents. He shared way too much of his personal life and was incredibly unprofessional at times. He also doesn't give "filler" assignments, so if you flunk a quiz because he poorly taught the material, your grade is shot.
One of the best teachers I've had, treats his students like fellow adults. Doesn't hold your hand every step of the way (as it should be), but very helpful if you ask him for help. Highly sociable, funny, and great to know.
His arrogant demeanor and the way he picks on certain students makes me dislike him as a person. His teaching isn't terrible though, and its a fairly easy class. If you want to avoid teachers with bad personalities however, avoid Kummer.
By far the best teacher I have ever had; I hope that the profs in college are half as good as he is. I had him for Gov and AmWorld. He knows his stuff (and he'll make sure to lord that over you). If you appreciate sarcasm, pay attention and take decent notes, you'll like his classes. He must have changed his grading system since the earlier posts, because I heard few complaints from my peers.
He is such a great teacher! He's very funny, and teaches so you actually understand the concepts. His Am/World class were awesome. Great teacher. :]
The classes I took from Kummer were my most useful at TJ. during my year abroad I was constantly thinking about what I learned in Am/Wld. teaches us to see different perspectives on internat. affairs.
Really knows his stuff. Being a humanities teacher at TJ is difficult, and he does it with ease. I feel that I am more worldly after taking his Am. World Class. Take this class FOOLZ!
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. Getting an A is hard as hell, but he is so funny and I love the subject. Good stories and he really makes you think about our system and how it works. WIsh we had more points.
I'm in two classes with him and he is an amazing teacher! Am/Wld is a must-take for anyone interested in international relations or current affairs. Best class I've taken at TJ. Gov rocks too.
He's pretty much the best gov teacher ever. Getting an A is hard due to the few amount of points per quarter, but the class is hard to hate with him teaching 'cause he's really funny and awesome. :D
Gov is my favorite humanities class at TJ. I look forward to every lesson because everything Mr. Kummer says is interesting. He also does not waste our time w/busy work. can't wait for Am/Wld!
He's a good guy, and he teaches well. Something about his class didn't sit well with me though. I'd say he's second best to Mr. Majeske.
kummer is amazing... make me want to major in political science after going into the class with no background whatsoever! yeah... so not gonna major in it since not all teachers are like him! thbest
Okay, been meaning to post this for awhile since I believe Mr. Kummer does read this... I left him a few complaints about the way he led his class a few months ago and he apologized to the class and vowed to make an effort to change that. He really has, and I have to give him props for really taking that to heart (and succeeding in making the class so much more enjoyable!)
great guy. knows what he's talking about. he keeps us going at a good speed as far as covering material, but still manages to tell lots of great stories. He seems to really care about teaching the students, not only for the AP but for college and the rest of our lives.
Not a bad teacher at all - he makes the class quite funny - but from time to time he needs to realize that he is not above the students.
Had him for Econ. He's a really interesting guy, and has some great stories to tell (my favorite was the Bike-a-thon one), though he can frequently get side-tracked, which could be problematic for a semester course like Econ. His grading system definitely makes every point matter, but it wasn't too hard to get an A if you just did the work and paid attention, since he practically told you the test questions. I'm taking his post-1989 history class this year, so there must be something I liked!
Kummer is the coolest ever, but having so few points per quarter makes it hard to get an A.
didnt like grading system... he discouraged extra credit, even though there were VERY few points each quarter... hard to do the grades i wanted
Keeps class pretty easy-going. Funny. Doesn't play favorites. No hwk
no homework, but not many grades for an entire quarter, so each assignment is really important...good class discussions
best teacher ive ever had - quick, funny, kind. knows and loves his subjects and connects with students-we pay attention and learn through discussion. no hwk.
Great guy, tries to be friends with everyone. Very easy to get a B (I never studied & I always got at least that), harder to get an A. Not much hw! Good teach.
He doesn't choose favorites, which is good. But his grading system is nuts. Random jokes. Makes hard attempts to find the opportunity to curse in class.
He's a cool guy, his side stories are fun, cuz he's teaching us to pass the AP
too full of himself. plays favoritism. grading system wack. keep changing mind
