I graduated in 1973 and the only teacher I really remember is "Mr. Sawaya". He used to give me reading lists of interesting and challenging books and initiated my love of philosophy. I returned to college after a long hiatus and graduated from UCI with a degree in Philosophy; honestly, that began in his Intro to Philosophy class. I am thrilled that so many other students feel the same way.
Easy? Are you kidding me? Mr. Sawaya had us write an essay on a novel every week in AP English. Back in those days I really didn't get what he was trying to do. But the mark he made on me was indelible. He made me the philosophic fruitcake I am. Without his setting me on track as a writer I doubt if I would have ever made it into publication. I don't recommend Mr. Sawaya because he was easy. I recommend him because he makes you think.
Mr. Sawaya changed my life (this is apparently not something new regarding him in relation to his students, old and new). His unorthodox way of teaching was both refreshing and challenging. He wasn't easy by any means but he made you think and helped you in every way possible. He had us listen to music in order to open our minds. Instead of telling us how to do things, he taught us to think for ourselves. If it wasn't for him, my life would be so different right now.
Fantastic teacher; cares about students; VERY knowledgeable about literature & film. Laid-back with deadlines and helpful with essays. You won't do projects but will write essays that will improve your writing. Lenient grader
you'll see the true brilliance of his teaching only when you enter college; you'll recognize the same expectation for mature thinking but sorely miss the compassion
He is definitely one of the best teachers at Troy. It's worth taking philosophy even in you don't like the subject just to have him as a teacher. He enriched my life.
A legend at Troy. The wisest, coolest teacher many people ever have. His popularity is due to both his ability to make learning both fun and knowleadgable.
Sawaya is AWESOME. You learn so much from his class and it's sooo fun at the same time. He really cares for his students. Plus there are teddy bears!
RECOMMENDED -- One of Troy's proven best teachers. Great at English and Philosophy. Has the feel of a college class. Cares about students and what they think
Sawaya is so cultured and cool. You get the feeling in his class he not only loves English/Phil, but his students as well. A truly awesome teacher.
You made me a philosophy person!! Great books... when I wasn't frustrated by them. Bistro 522, long may you stand... even though there are earthquakes.
sawaya is the BEST ever.. he is STILL my most fave teacher, even while in college. he is AWESOME, you learn so much from him - not only school stuff.
Sawaya, you're actually making people do work now??? we need to straighten you out.
Great teacher, i actually learned from him even though we watched movies all day
Really cool teacher, one of the best teachers I have ever had
oh so so... who cares, anyway? "would you like to see a film on that?"
