Crazy loving person
I had Mr Bates from 1979-1982 and he changed my artistic life- one of the greatest mentors I have ever known. Great teacher and sense of humor, knows how to motivate and challenge. I went into industrial design because if him and owe much of my success to him- one of a kind
Mr. Bates is a phenomenal teacher, I still think about his crazy stories. I actually chose to spite myself and not have a career in art because I couldn't have him as my teacher in my last year of high school. I was lucky to have him. -J.Parisi
Wow! How grateful I am to publicly acknowledge the ONE teacher who saw in me what I, and all around me, did not. Mr. Bates... my priceless mentor. I owe my success in fulfilling my objectives as an artist. Thank you for your infinite commitment, contributions, guidance and compassion. I am delighted to see us, your students, sharing our gratitude to you. You did change our lives for the BETTER. God bless you. Love
Mr. Bates was my mentor not just teacher. He had such an impact on my life and I will forever be grateful to him. He gave my the courage to express my inner artist without out embarrassment. He opened doors to my creative mind that would have never been noticed. It has been 14 years since I sat in his classroom and I still remember every lesson he taught me all those years ago. One lesson I will always cherish:"There are no mistakes in art, only opportunities" -T.Orazi '99 God Bless Mr.Bates
I'm writing FORTY years late, but that's only because we didn't have computers back then. (Image that.) Mr. Bates is an amazing artist, but he is SO much more. He inspires students to THINK. He influenced my life in more ways than he will ever know. As a former student, I occasionally returned to still seek out his advice. The only request he ever made was that when it was MY turn to help a fellow artist, to do so in his stead. Be thankful if you find yourself in his class. Thank you Mr. Bates.
Truly the best art teacher out there. He would go out of his way just to help you out. I remember the countless times I spent in that room after school working on my photography. And if anyone's wondering, yes, I'm the one who was always working on the photographs in the middle of the hallway during the semesters. Learned soooo much from this man! He inspired me to become a great photographer. He pushed me over the edge which was great!! If he were teaching at college, I'd take him again!
He was my favorite teacher of all time. YARFTPYAI was his favorite saying. You are responsible for the position you are in.
One of the best teachers I have ever had, in public school and college. And I have 4 degrees....this man can change a life! He certainly changed mine.

A was truely inspiration to me and the reason I became a teacher. He taught me a great deal about art and life. He was one of the biggest influences in my life. His passion for teaching and his humor is what allows him to make such a powerful connection with his students and is what makes him a great teacher. Thank you sir, for changing my life.
