Mr. Duncan actually teaches physics. The course is only hard if you aren't smart enough to understand physics. If you show a genuine interest he will help you for as long as it takes for you to understand it. His teaching methods aren't standard, but they will be extremely useful when you want to actually recall the information. Don't expect to get A's on every test. If you can get an A on every test, you will get a 5 on the AP exam.
An A in the class is a 85%, so it's not impossible like some people make it out to be. Almost every single test question is free-response, so beware. Although AP Physics 1 is based on Algebra/Trig skills, if you're bad at math, DON'T TAKE IT JUST DON'T. Duncan is available to help afterschool, but he can be rather condescending at times if you're not one of the smart kids in class (you know, the 100% and didn't even study people). Lecture-wise, he mainly just solves problems to explain concepts.
Not only is he arrogant and rude, but he doesn't even teach physics well. He makes students feel worthless and not want to ask him for help. He makes you feel bad about not doing well on tests. When the average grade in that class is a C and there are multiple students get 0% on their tests, it may be something to do with the teaching. Thanks for ruining physics Duncan.
Physics is tough. Looking back at high school, I memorized things. That doesn't work in physics. I had to do the homework for understanding, not just completion. Most students are getting killed in physics. I am acing college physics.
Mr. Duncan has a reputation of a hard teacher. It's not that he is hard, rather, he is rigorous. Now that I am in college, it is clear that he really did teach me physics and how to reason things out. It is like the "mean parent" that makes you eat your vegetable, enforces a curfew, and makes you earn money for your Ipod, car, etc. That being said, if you listen, he tells you what is on the test. Many times the quiz questions come directly from the homework, word-for-word other than the numbers
If you are looking for an easy A, wrong teacher. He doesn't give busy work. Most of the whiners in my class weren't willing to actually work. 80% of the students in our AP Physics B class ended up with an A. All but one student in AP C got an A. The pass rate for both AP classes is over 85%. 85% pass rate but gets some students say he doesn't teach. Really???? It is physics. It is supposed to be hard. Maybe there is reason no other teacher at VHS is willing to teach AP Physics or AP chemistry.
Nice guy, but you'll hear the same ten stories the whole semester. A few of the tests are impossible, but the subject itself is difficult. Get Spann if possible, his class is much, much easier.
I thought Mr. Duncan was an OK teacher when I had him for physics, then I took physics in college. Most of the other students in my college class were lost. They had simply learned to memorize equations. Mr. Duncan helped us "understand the why's" of physics. If you want to actually LEARN, not just MEMORIZE stuff, take Mr. Duncan for physics.
Mr. Duncan met with me after I expressed concern about my son not doing well in the class. He showed me the last two tests. There were 28 homework questions. 16 of the 20 were on the test (almost word for word). That is a lot easier than my physics teacher. He meets with students on Thursdays after school and sometimes even on Saturdays.
He won't baby you. If you want help outside of class, you can get it. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take Duncan.
He is there for 2.5 after school and sometimes on Saturdays to help students. Most questions come right from the homework. If you aren't getting an A or B in his class, something is wrong with you. Ha
You have to work hard. Most of the questions come stright from the homework. Many complain, but come on people, it's Physcics, not a puffball class. He stays after school two days a week.
Really will help if you work at all. If not, good luck.
Okay Mr.Duncan frikken rocks all we did in AP physics was screw around and say innuendos and sometimes learn. Miraculously a lot of us including me got 5's on the AP test we dont know how but w/c!
Very knowledgable in everything. He will get off topic, that's a guarantee. Can be a challenging class but I usually enjoyed the class. He really wants his students to do good in his class.
You can learn if you want, but he won't force you to learn physics. Life is full of whiners who want to be spoon-fed, but won't do anything to help themselves. Seriously, try cracking open a book.
Physics is tough stuff. It doesn't come easy. He tells you what is going to be on the test and quiz. Some whine about how he doesn't teach, but then talk during class instead of practing the problems.
DON'T DISS THE GURU!! If you don't know how to read a textbook, or study on your own, or you're BAD AT MATH. Then yeah, PHYSICS MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU. Cry more about your B's you overachieving asians.
His class spaned across every topic: Land Before Time to his famous 'first-date at Magic Mountain' stories... everything except physics. An enjoyable person, DREADFUL teacher. Please, beware.
this guy is really cool and you'll really learn a lot if he actually teaches. thats the problem, he goes off on random stories and you learn nothing. but when you do learn, you learn. weighs grades
He knows the subject but doesn't teach it well to the class. It would help if he spent more time explaining all the homework problems in class instead of going off on some un related lecture.
His class was a lot of fun. The field trip to Magic and the labs were all enjoyable. I had a group of 4 friends in the back corner and we all talked the entire time.
Nice guy, but goes off on too many tangents..would be better teacher if he did more problems
HE IS A VERY SMART MAN WHO I BELIEVE WANTS TO HELP HIS STUDENTS SUCCEED.HE HOLDS REVIEW SESSIONS OFTEN AND HAS GREAT DEMOS TO HELP THOSE WHO LEARN BY SEEING.
Awesome guy, but not a great teacher. He's fun and friendly, but his teaching methods are a little odd. He's not very clear and rarely makes sense.
He works us very hard. Duncan cares about his students. He's not an easy A, but you can get an A if you work hard.
If you want to be a slacker ... wrong teacher to take. He wants us to learn. He gives out his cell phone and home phone in case we have questions!!!! Reviews were held on Sat.
He is a very cool teacher. However not a great teacher
He knows his stuff, and is a very smart guy. But he can't teach, he tries to teach, but digresses so much. Class is easy though, i just hate how he crams at the end
His teaching method will only work for certain people. It didn't work for me but he's a great guy. He let me pass with C- although I had D something.
He really cares about the students. He even gives us his home phone number and holds Saturday study sessions before finals and midterms.
Very cool guy, awesome attitude, best class discussions ever, but... u will hate physics forever!!! Cool guy!!!
cool guy, teaches in ways people can learn, makes it interesting and is quite helpful when you need it.
hard(its ap class) but very cool he is smart knows what he is talking about
Mr. Duncan is fun and he offers a lot of help you just have to ask for it.
He is an amazing teacher if you are willing to put in the work. It's easier if this is your only H/AP class so that you can really focus on this and only this.
He does talk down to students, and is very prone to going off on tangents. Very smart person, but unable to teach us his knowledge.
curses at students. talks down to them. ap students not succeeding.
