Edgar is the best ninth grade English teacher. His rants are hilarious, he keeps class interesting, and the books we read were mostly decent. (The only one I hated was The Odyssey). Sometimes he gets a bit biblical, but if someone calls him out he will chill with the bible references. Biggest suggestion- TAKE NOTES DURING HIS LECTURES FOR THE TEST B/C HE USES THE SAME EXAMPLES HE USES IN CLASS ON THE EXAMS. Mr. Edgar is great, and his class is super fun!
I love Mr. Edgar!!! He is my favorite English teacher, ever! I look forward to his class every day! I love his lectures and his jokes and his overall good attitude. He's taught me a lot, and is not afraid to say what he thinks!!!
Really great teacher who loves what he does. His lectures are so interesting and he is clearly really knowledgeable. He also can be funny
He is a great teacher! I look forward to his class. Although, he seems to grade things at a slow pace. Besides that, I love his class!
He's an amazing teacher and a person that you just know has a passion for learning and educating students
He was awesome! So knowledgeable on everything , his classes can feel a little like a lecture with all of his tangents but he still really taught me a lot, and far more than any other English teacher at Niskayuna High School has. He also always keeps you busy, we read a total of like 8 or 9 books and had a paper due around the same time. But he is always willing to offer you an extension. Just pay attention and actually read the books and you'll have a lot of fun and learn a lot in his class.
In my opinion, Mr.Edgar is one of those stereotypically bad teachers you see in movies and cringe at. His monologues are long and stale and he most often relates everything we read to either Twilight or the Bible. These long tangents he goes off on serve no purpose other than to prove that he knows more about anything than his students do. He often negatively corrects you when you're wrong and makes you feel really bad about it, unless you're one of the popular girls.
Mr. Edgar is the best English teacher you'll ever have. It is clear that he wants his students to get the most out of the books read in class and literature as a whole. During his lectures in class, he provides many examples which allow you to grasp concepts at a deeper level. I wish for the test essays I received feedback on how I could improve for the future. Other than that, the tests are fair, yet challenging. I also wish he would provide comments for class participation grades.
I found his class to be fun, and his lecture style lessons to be interesting and relevant. I had him last year and I hope I will get to have him again before high school ends.
He's very smart, extremely passionate about what he teaches, and very clearly loves his job. I have him for fantasy and whenever I ask him a question he gives a clear answer, plus background information which legitimizes the answer and answers any followup before it's even asked. I've had teachers with a hint of arrogance with their knowledge, Mr. Edgar is the clear opposite. If you love learning, fantasy, or want a teacher who'll help you while having fun at the same time, Mr. Edgar is the best
I have taken his classes and have been personally delighted to hear his insight on books and many other topics, as well as his ability to be "current", as in he is able to use technology and understand what's going on. I would recommend this teacher.
Mr. Edgar is the man. Sometimes he gets very boring and I need to leave class, but some days he makes some great points. He gets that we are seniors so he gives the perfect amount of homework. He has a great style in which he presents his points
Really good teacher. Definitely knows what he's talking about. Tests are as fair as can be, and essays are graded pretty generously (he rarely gives anything below 85 on an essay), so it's the pop reading quizzes that make or break your grade - but those are also pretty fair. The reading amount for homework isn't bad at all. He does, however, teach towards the more intelligent people, so I can see how it could be hard to follow if you're struggling.
He is quite knowledgeable and definitely knows his stuff. However, he could improve upon the fact that he talks all throughout class which kind of puts people to sleep. Otherwise, he's a great teacher.
Mr. Edgar isn't a terrible teacher, but he doesn't make me feel like I want to learn anything. Plus, he only appears to like the kids who are really good at critical thinking, and the kids who need help are kind of left in the dust.
Mr. Edger is the most boring teacher I ever had. I literally fall asleep in his class everyday. I have not learned anything this year because he just goes off topic and then doesn't even remember how it realates to the book we are reading.
Oh my goodness. James Edgar. Love him. He's a boss, best teacher ever. The only thing you need to do is laugh at his jokes and know how to have a good conversation with him and the class will be a piece of cake.
his writing assignments have nothing to do with the books we read. also, the assignments he gives out are THE SAME assignments he gave my older sister and she had him 6 years ago. i asked older kids and they had the exact assignments too. he know a lot of trivia but he certainly cannot teach.
His 9H class is one of my easiest classes, every class follows the same boring format: He lectures for half the block and then we discuss as a class. His assignments don't ask for much, and I mean it, he gave me an A on a report on a book I didn't even read. Overall, his class is easy but boring, he loves to go off on tangents and repeats the same stories over and over.
I personally loved Mr. Edgar, he didn't give out an obnoxious amount of homework, and if you could stay tuned into his discussions then you definitely learned a lot. 9H was pretty fun! If I had one thing I didn't like it would be that he didnt give you very much information on what to study for tests.
james edgar told our class "i would rather teach sunday school"
I'm in his freshmen honors english class, and I have not learned one thing this year. Every class is the exact same boring talking about books that are not interesting at all. He grades your essays and doesn't ever write any comments to help you improve. I feel like I missed a year of English.
he's a good teacher and his lectures are very interesting although sometimes they can get a bit tenuouse when he gets very into it....
Ahh his classes freshmen year were so interesting. He can be alittle boring while going over books because he gets really into them.
He's a great english teacher, but most of the people here that are complaining about grades recieved bad grades which is why they're saying 'edgar slapped on random grade'. He doesn't give many A's, that's true, but he does actually grade it. He does kinda go on 30 minute tangents tho...
mr. edgar is a great teacher. he's actually intelligent, and can be pretty entertaining.
He takes FOREVER to hand your freakin papers back! He's very smart and encouraging but I think he dosn't really grades papers.
He gets on 30 minutes tangents, but don't get me wrong, thats great and everything but his class really can be boring. I agree with the previous comments, I think that he just slams down a random grade for every paper... I mean, i loved edgar in the beginning of the year but he has became more boring lately.
Although many people think Mr. Edgar is an outstanding teacher I believe that he does not put as much effort into grading like others. I was an extremely bright student in English class before I went into his class and received B's on almost every assignment. I would sometimes question whether he actually graded those papers. Although I find these statements aboce true, he is very intelligent in English.
Mr. Edgar is very intelligent. He is a great teacher, and interesting. A bit tough, B's in his class are good (my opinion) makes class very fun and is very funny if you pay attention to him.
coolest dude ever, even if we get a lttle off topic :]
His test questions were opinionated. And I got almost the same grade on every paper with no comments. But he goes on the best tangents, which makes class fun. Interesting guy.
I have to say that he's really been there, he wasn't afraid to bring up the controversial issues. A little off-topic sometimes, but very good overall.
Rarely appreciated teaching style, focuses more on the student teaching themself. This has the effect of creating students who learn the subject, not just listen to it.
He makes great connections however he gives you the same grade all year and his class is very boring at times.
If you don't talk in class, you're pretty much screwed.
Great Teacher! Makes everything in class interesting!
Mr. Edgar-best teacher i've ever had in my life! people who complained must have been the ones who talk in class.he's really interesting, and he knows everything in the world!!
He make great connections between the 9H literature and our lives in the modern world
Every teacher needs to be like Mr. Edgar. Seriously.
If he says "success to me is helping you succeed" again i'll drop his class. Very unclear and has many irrelevant tangents in class.
his test questions are very specific, and when you try and get help, his answers do not answer the question. his grading criteria is questionable, but he knows his info!
is a good teacher, however i do not know his criteria. When i think i do bad, I do good. I don't really know what he wants. But is pretty easy so far.
I love how people on this page feel that they're more qualified to decide what deserves what grade than Mr. Edgar. He's a really smart guy, and if they'd let him help, they'd learn
Good teacher, but he is so pompous and rude it's ridiculous.
Biased toward stuff he likes, only gives good grades to sentimental stuff.
Makes class interesting, but tests are hard and grades tough.
At frist I didn't know what I thought of him, but as classes went on I realized that he was interesting to talk to and his lectures were interesting too.
His tests had opinionated questions, he gave u the same grade all year regardless of improvement, said 'uh' incessantly and had favorites.. but was ok overall.
Mr. Edgar was probobly the most inteligent and fascinating teacher I have ever had. I had him for honors english and he realy helped prepare me for later years
mr edgar is friggin awesome, we may not have learned all that much about english, but he is an interesting teacher and great guy. hellz ya for mr edgar!
He really needs to stop talking about Dartmouth cause no one cares.
Mr. Edgar's a great guy. His class isn't nearly as difficult as everyone says it is and he really cares about his students.
likes himself more than his students. when he doesn't like you it shows
in my opinion, the most fascinating individual at the school...All this negative feedback is a result of his difficulty. However, the man is brilliant.
favorites cuz he askes me why i don't say stuff, but he never calls on me when i raise my hand he picks on that same 4 people before anyone else. but he's cool
Maybe if he graded his papers as fast as how much he talks, then we'd actually get papers back within the same month!
excellent english teacher. freshmen ought not complain so much, as it is only 1 yr. into ur high school career -- comparison is important.
i dont have him for english but i did for study hall and all i did was talk about random things with him...hes great!
Never let me go to the bathroom, very boring, nice guy.
I think he's a good teacher. He made class interesting and I actually learned a lot in his class. Plus, we had fun, but that was because of the kids...
How could you say something bad about Edgar. He is awesome is very funny and in Ninth grade we always had interesting convos during class about everythig
Mr. Edgar is a sweet heart and has so much to teach students! I love the man!
Fantasticly funny guy. Says Um alot, but don't hold it against him. Very difficult grader.
(i've heard he's gotten better) when i had him, the grade you got on your first paper was the same for the rest of them. once a kid wrote gibberish and got an A
