My son complains about him everyday. His grading is harsh, I don't think he notices how important grades are to the students. He just got his in-class essay back and I am outraged.Who says in-class essays should be graded as harshly as normal essays? Also, what's with him grading everything? He graded my son's outline on an essay, and gave him such a terrible score.Who knew there was a "right" way to write outlines. He needs to be more understanding to the students, I'm going to report him...
He is the best English teacher that I've ever had. If it's hard at first, do NOT switch out. He is a genius and perhaps the most knowledgeable person that I have ever met, he improved my writing exponentially and helped me to absquatulate out of ACP and into Honors. Talk to him more, he is super interesting and cool, quite an intellectual fellow. Although he may not be for everybody, you'll get way better at writing (especially analytical) by the end of the year.
Super easy B, impossible A. I sat there in A block sophomore honors and slept with my eyes open and got the easiest B of my life. I really don't think I learned anything, but he was mildly entertaining and didn't assign much work
He is not the best at conveying what he wants to say, and oftentimes I feel he either accepts answers that are at least partially wrong as though they were 100% right, just to spare feelings and not say "No". Nonetheless, he's a solid teacher if you can follow him, but not the best by any means.
I had Mr. Hill so sophomore honors. He's a nice person, and a teenager. Given, he's terribly disorganized (but it got me out of writing an essay on Tale of Two cities which i did not understand AT ALL), but I personally didn't mind. Now, he did have a lot of creative writing this year and I got fairly decent grades on those, although my analytical I can not say the say the same. His reading quizzes were wicked hard at first but got a lot easier. I'm pretty sure his MBTI is INTJ, if that helps.
Had him for 10th grade honors. Gets off topic and into rants very often in class. Not clear on expectations/curriculum. Not an easy class at all. In-class essay prompts were not particularly hard, but graded subjectively and harshly. Somewhat helpful if you go talk to him during J Block and decent classroom discussions (IF we had them at all). All in all, far from a great teacher, but I have probably had worse.
I had him in 10th honors and seriously he is the hardest teacher I ever had. His reading quizzes are very specific and you get it wrong for minor details (this is 30% of your grade), we wrote at least 5 in class writing before term 1 even ended, and he's such a harsh grader (oh and its 40% of your grade), he has difficulty of talking straight forward, makes odd reference to unknown sci-fi movies that no one can relate to, and thinks he is supposed to be hard because its honors english.
Writing essays for Mr. Hill is a hard thought-provoking task, yet it was one of the most enriching academic experiences of my freshman year. He reciprocates the kindness and attention he gets from his students and is just generally an amazing person.
Mr Hill has a temper, his grading is subjective and he spends more time being challenging students than teaching. He appears quite interested in proving his intelligence rather than encouraging students to think independently.
He's kind of quirky, but I absolutely love him and his class. He's very willing to help with my writing, even in other classes, and while he does lash out sometimes he makes up for it with all his random knowledge about life. He's just great.
An extremely knowledgeable and capable teacher, but some he definitely has some problems. I don't think his grading is random, but sometimes he doesn't give any comments, even on essays, just a couple of checks and a letter grade. He can suddenly lash out at students for odd reasons (once for a student putting on a jacket). I also heard he didn't give any A's on the Tale of Two Cities paper. One of the major problems of English: super subjective grading.
I love Mr.Hill!! I love how his class can get off topic but in a good way. We can talk about things and ask questions that might throw us off but, we get a lot of knowledge out of it! Even though he hates it when people talk(most teachers do), his class is really not bad on most days. It can get tiring sometimes but yeah
Not helpful, can hardly form sentences, very inconsistent and arbitrary grader, horribly boring classes, and hates people. Make judgments now, they won't change
I agree with everything the aforementioned poster wrote, he is bad at what he does. Though in comparison to many of the people in his particular department, he's good.
He is Avery tough grader and doesn't give very much feedback on what the student can do better for the next paper. He has sudden attacks on students where he yells at them then stares at them.
Smart guy, a bit questionable at times, but who isn't really. I liked him.
hard. serious. no sense of humor. doesn't help me much. even though he is very good in english, not very good in teaching
I think Mr. Hill is a very good teacher. Some may say he is hard, however, I think all it takes to succeed is a little extra effort. Taking extra time to review papers makes a huge difference because
He's not an easy teacher, but his class is fantastic. To get on his good side you just have to try, ask questions, seek help. It also helps if you're a tad nerdy.
very hard teacher, cool guy though very smart just get on his good side
I actually like his class cuz he's pretty funny. But soemtimes, i force myself to laugh so that I would get on his "good" side. One thing I hate about him is he's very unclear in instructions
I actually like him as a teacher....he helps a lot with grammar and mechanics! So far so good.
He is an ok teacher, but his grading is arbitrary. Although for freshman he will give everyone B's easily, he will rarely gve an A
If you have him Freshman year, feel lucky because he really prepares you, and is a good teacher! However, his "no A" policy obviously won't do you well later on, so sucks to be you if you have him after Freshman year.
Eh. He's a good teacher, but definitely too harsh to the point that it's just STUPID. His assignments are interesting, but honestly, he should grade nicer--- I despise the theory of "if everyone in the class is an A student, then the ones who are A-minus students should get B instead".
Mr.Hill is great. I had him in freshman year and I was more than prepared for sophomore honors. Challenging but you learn a lot and he always has an interesting spin on things! I say stay in his class
extremely hard grader, knows he is also which makes it better.
One of the best english teachers I've ever had. He only judges you if you don't do the work and don't contribute to class, and who can blame him? He seems to have a PhD in every area of the subject. Very impressive.
This guy needs to lighten up. He judges your character every single second, if you don't talk, if you try to be funny, if you don't want to do something that he loves he'll hold it against you. You'll learn a lot but you'll probably hate him the entire time.
he is unfair in his grading, does not understand students, and is easily sidetracked so you don't learn anything useful. switch out IMMEDIATELY or you will regret it
You just have to know how to deal with him, is all. He is def. a hard grader, but a really good teacher and really helped me understand. Classes are awesome if you get him. He's about my favorite teacher, honest.
He is soooo funny, English class is awesome if you have him as your teacher! Note: it helps if you know your basic fantasy (Harry Potter, LOTR, Philip Pullman, etc.)
He is the best . . . even if he is a tough grader. He is so funny and a really good person. He doesn't push his political views on you, like so many other Newton teachers. You are lucky if you get him
He's really smart and he's is a good teacher, but he gives occasional unfair quizzes, and he can be too harsh quite often. He also knows an insane amount about the English language, I think he knows where just about every word originally came from.
He never says hi, or even smile at you if you see him in the hall... or even if your early to class. However, he is soooo funny, and the anti-soc. thing is just something that ppl either get or they don't. WARNING: don't get on his bad side!!!
He's so funny and he's a good teacher but you have to work hard in his class
Mr.Hill is probably the best teacher I've ever had. You might have to work harder than in any other English class, but everything you do is incredibly rewarding. Plus, he is sooo nice.
Amazing. Just superb. He taught me most of what other English teachers didn't or couldn't. AND a surprisingly nice person. Real calm most of the time, unless you're being a dork and sleeping in class.
Very odd character, he can go from terrifying to your best friend. I really liked him though, he definatley averages out to a pretty neat guy.
pretty strict but he taught me alot but don't get on his bad side like I was for the better part of the year and do all the odyssey summeries
AWESOME! Tough grader, but teaches well and improved my writing! Great sense of humor and usually very nice ( I wish I had him every year!!!)
Jeremiah is an ok teacher, not my fav, the only scary part bout his class is the desk slamming...its gotta stop!!!
one of the funnest classes ever maybe just b/c of the ppl in my class but he really know how to get a great discussion going
Great Guy! Cares for his students. His grading system isnt hard, just write a clear essay. He forgives easily and wants to help. Great conversations in class.
mission impossible- i probably won't go to college because of his grading system, please put the E in easy!!!!!!!!
He's a good teacher, but definetly needs to revise his grading system - big time! I wonder if anyone has gotten an A in that class?...
While not an easy teacher, Mr. Hill taught me a lot, and improved my writing. Interesting class discussions covered diverse topics, from Iraq to Shakespeare.
Mr. Hill is great! He knows what he's doing and has a good vibe going. Don't be scared by the HUGE list of expectations and do's and dont's he gives out at the beginning, it's what every teacher won't allow, he just makes it clear from the beginning!
Ok, i haven't been in his class for long i am a frosh but he is a little hard. Hes ok but i really don't like him that much. Well i will give him a chance.
great controversial discussions during class.thought prevoking discussions. HW reading of intresting essays. sense of humor.
Mr. Hill is a good guy and a good teacher. His final this year had the worst essay questions ever. My BSing will come through though. Besides that, Hill- A
never thought i'd say this, but mr. hill is AIGHT. ive never been on his good side.. but when i think about it... hes not THAT bad... he has a lot of habbits...
Jem, lets call him, is a wonderful teacher. As many have said before...he is very smart. It truley frightens me how much useless stuff he knows. Overall good.
He is a good teacher, very smart. But he is a hard grader and gives alot of work.
he is a good teacher, its the class that is bad. he is very smart and doesnt underrate people for not knwoing as much as him. speak britishly more often please!
Class is a little boring, but a nice teacher, should give more feedback on papers.
Mr. Hill is a very hard teacher and a really harsh grader. He likes good movies though. He has no right to talk to us about the war or make us read Hiroshima.
Way too hard and pretty unfair. I like the way he runs his class but we don't learn very much.
has improved a HUGE amount since the beginning of the year, good amount of work, but not the best on giving back feedback
I liek his whole casual friday deal, hes trying to stay HIP, into it. His class isnt bad but can get really long, and he tells us to much useless info.
I REALLY like Mr. Hill. Yeah, he's a really hard teacher, but just deal. He's really good, just stay on his A-list.
