I loved Mr. Amarillas. While many on this page are lambasting him for his un-American views, I don't think they understand that many of the things he brought up in the class are relevant to the current political climate. The views and opinions he brought into the class are valid and really helped me understand my role in society.
Honestly, his class is the only reason why I don't want to go to school. He's not a bad person per se, however, I feel that he is a rather incompetent history teacher. He doesn't clarify ANYTHING at all. He forces you take notes and the worst part is that they can be completely wrong and he wouldn't care. Anti-American, so you are basically forced to be biased all the damn time. His grading system is even worse. Nothing is ever in your favor. Honestly, he should just be a coach.
Incompetent/unable to properly formulate questions/hyper-controlling
Easily the worst teacher at Bellarmine
I got an A without taking notes and just raising my hand all the time. Just ask good questions and figure out what he's looking for on the tests and the class is a cakewalk. Once you figure out what he wants, it's honestly a pretty interesting class. The textbook gives a new and interesting perspective on American history and you get to watch a lot of interesting documentaries on things like rock music and lsd.
Had him for US History, as most people do. Hard class, you gotta figure out how he thinks, which is basically anti - America; so basically focus on all the flaws of the government in US history and you'll be pretty set. Also MAKE SURE to do a nightly review of your notes. There is a TON of info packaged in the reading and course and you should be taking two pages (one sheet) of notes at least. You have to have as much as you can memorized, but you especially need to know how to use that in test.
Take APUSH. That class will make a lot more sense. In Amo's class, you get punished for being unclear about material you weren't really taught. He knows a lot about history, and his lectures are informative, but he almost never covers or clarifies the material that you really need to know.
Awesome teacher who provides an honest description of US History. Very cool guy if you give him the time of day. Also very funny. Do your work and raise your hand In class.
He's a great teacher and generally a great guy. While people might claim him to be unfair in grading, he's actually quite fair. He gives good grades to those who answer his questions, ask questions and study for his class and he gives good grades to tests to those who deserve it. Some might claim that he's bias and this is true; however, as he said, "history is a biased viewpoint." Teaching it is no different. He's very knowledgeable and does teach well. If you study, you will get a good grade.
People give him a lot of undeserved stick. He is a great teacher, and an all around good guy. Is he bias? Yes, but to the people who ask questions and do the work completely. Is he hard? Yes, the tests are hard but he tells you how to study and get at least a B "Nightly Review"
Most people don't like Amo. He comes off as abrasive, nepotistic, and biased (which he is), but he is very knowledgeable. His class does teach you to question things, be it authority, motives, etc. As long as he likes you, you'll do fine in his class
I'll give him this much, he definitely knows what he's talking about on most areas of US History, but he's just so terrible at being a teacher. He definitely plays favorites, and his grading scale is completely inconsistent and completely unrelated to how well written your essays are. I've spent 4 hours studying for a quiz before and got a 17/25, while the next time I wrote things that were factually wrong and FROM THE WRONG TIME PERIOD and gotten a 23/25. Drop this class if you can.
After first semester, I honestly considered transferring to APUSH (at least there I would be graded fairly)...he definitely teaches clearly and presents all the material, but no matter how well I wrote the essays on tests, the grade would always be random. The corrections on the paper are totally unreadable. To give you some perspective, I used to study like crazy and end up getting Cs and Bs...for the final I lost all my notes, didnt study one bit, BSed everything and got a 94. Makes me crazy!!
Mr. Amarillas can't grade well. He grades on a bias towards students he personally likes that are on the football team and that has nothing to do with knowledge of history or in-class skills. He needs to re evaluate his teaching strategy and be a lot more lenient...
He is an extremely biased teacher and if you dont get on his good side then you are screwed for the entire school year
Not a good person. Not a class to look forward to. I don't know what is wrong with Mr. Amarillas, be friendly for once. Nobody likes him.
I just couldn't stand looking at him everyday. It was nauseating. He is a threat to my health and I don't like being subjected to cruel and unusual punishment.
john amarillas is the root of all evil. he's a commie and hes got tiny legs Hes ignorant, and whatever you say is only right when he says it, until then you are wrong He says demeaning things like "give up your seat at bellarmine" and says that soccer is a communist sport Many people are offended by his views In reality he is dumb as a rock and regurgitates Peoples History by Zinn and in order to get a good grade he expects you to do the same I got better grades when i slept in class than when participating
Easy, just regugitate what he says in class and say that capitalism is the root of all evil. Don't learn anything useful from him though.
There's no reason why he should have such a bad reputation. Just regurgitate the material and participate He'll grade you on how smart he thinks you are, so if you speak up a lot, you'll be fine.
He isnt really that hard. at times it may seem that his class is all about his political ideals worth while class. gives you a different perspective/way to look at things. hes such a funny guy.
i had this guy back in 1992. He was not a very good teacher back then. I felt like he had us read back and regurgitate rather than thinking things through.
Really pushes you to learn and really eveluate what's really going on. This class isn't just knowing facts - it's learning from the past and determining what was right or wrong.
there are other books than A People's History of the United States. Read some quality literature. Perhaps dont pick someone who doesnt have a socialist agenda.
Pretty good teacher -- a lot of reading and quizzes. Good guy.
Alright... learn alot, but i dont know if thats a good thing
