Mr. Barry is easily the smartest teacher who has ever taught me. The class has also become one of the most consequential in my student career, challenging me to discuss my interpretations of history more and analyze events in depth. Some will try to tell you the class is super hard and it's not worth taking, but even if you get a bad grade, every moment in that class is a moment you challenge your mind and push your limits. If you do the work, put in the thought, and love debate, you'll love it.
APUSH and sociology are entirely worth taking. They're rigorous and intimidating (you're in a room with peers who will go on to do incredible things, maybe already do). But you're being challenged like you never have been at school and you've never had a smarter teacher, who believes in your intelligence like no other adult in your life ever has. And his assignments are often unclear and you might not survive the class... but in college you'll wonder why most of your profs just don't measure up.
The hardest teacher at the school, but also the best. He will make you work extremely hard, but in the process you will learn a ton and become a much better writer and critical thinker. His AP U.S. class is by far the most interesting class in the school, everyone should take it.
It's been 9 years and Mr. Barry's APUSH is the greatest class I have ever taken. His teaching style is heavily Socratic and those dare to express opinions, in response to his controversial topics, are rewarded intellectually. The first APUSH exam may cause a cognitive dissonance for many because unlike his humorous personality, the exams are systemically created and graded—Scantron back then. This class teaches you how to think, a skill much more valuable in life than your exam grades.
Mr. Barry is really kind and funny, but his teaching is very bad. He goes off on tangents unrelated to the topic, expects people to memorize things he said once two weeks ago, and wants you to take extensive notes every class. His assignments can be confusing as well. If you're out too often, he's extremely unhelpful and almost rude, acting as if it's your fault you're out. I only recommend him to students that haven't missed a day of school since 2nd grade and who really like reading textbooks.
Though I understand that he teaches an AP course and therefore the stakes must be high, I feel like the man could do a hell of a lot more for his students. Yes, I know that in taking an AP course we take on a responsibility, but he really does nothing to help. His comments on essays are rather unhelpful and when I get a bad grade I don't feel he gives me constructive criticism on what I'm doing wrong exactly. Very funny but wastes a lot of class time and the way he talks is genuinely confusing.
APUSH is by far the most difficult course I have taken, however it is also the course that has taught me the most. Mr. Barry poses engaging questions, and his opinions, though sometimes extensive, are intriguing. His essay grading is very tough, but, in a class full of kids who are accustomed to getting A's for rote memorization, this is beneficial in the long run. Take his class if you're up for a challenge, but don't expect it to be your typical high school history course.
pay attention in class, show good effort, and Mr.Barry will help ypu become the best A.P student you can be. Also, he's very funny and he was a wonderful teacher even though he can sometimes state things in complex ways.
Mr. Barry is the best social studies teacher in the school, hands down. H's extremely knowledgeable and insightful. Also as the adviser to the debate club, he's dedicated and helpful.
Which he would stick with what he says and not change is mind. other than that he is great
He is a great teacher and I'm very glade it was he that taught me APUSH.
Mr. Barry is one of the best teachers at Algonquin. He clearly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He teaches the APUSH class as a college level class. If you aren't interested in history, don't take it as there's a huge amount of work. I think the only students who should take this class are those committed to doing the work and are willing to share their opinions and insights. This is not a class for introverted or shy students. This class is well worth the effort!
I had to transfer out of the class because of schedule reasons, so I never got to experience the final projects that everyone seems to be complaining about. But he seemed like a really great, entertaining teacher during the time that I had him. One of my favorites. And of course the class is going to be hard, it's an AP class!
He will work to help you if you want to be helped. He doesn't go easy and expects you to push yourself. So in short, he'll put effort into helping you if you put effort in yourself
*also has a tendency to ramble.
He'll give you whatever grade you earn, good or bad. Honestly interested in history, loves teaching, and makes the class fun. Be prepared to be mercilessly mocked if you don't study and try to ad-lib!
Very cool guy, awesome class. Insanely funny too and he get's personal with students, like he actually talks to you like you aren't a kid.
Mr. Barry is a great teacher and helps you prepare for the APUSH test, but Mr. Barry really lost my respect when he assigned the final project, 3 essays in 4 weeks on huge topics.
his class=really interesting. he on the other hand, was infuriating (not because of the grades; i did pretty well in his class B /A-). He had a habit of stating his opinions as if they were fact >.<
Mr. Barry taught the one class you could always do better in. You really have to think and apply yourself. Class never got boring, but it was only as hard as you made it. Awesome teacher.
Pedagogical genius. Treats you like you're in college where you can't cry and get an A. That's life, get over it. Or don't take AP US and find out a few years later in college.
I took his sociology class last simester. Unbelievable. Entertaining, He actually made me look forward to his class!
hes cool, but ive heard rumors that he thinks were the worst class hes ever had in his 15 years of teaching...
mr. barry is an amazing guy & StuCo advisor. cool cool dude if i dont get him ill be angry
Best teacher at the school. He can come off as impersonal, but he's not really. His AP will make you think more so than any other class, and teach you how to write. He's also quite entertaining.
I enjoy the sarcasm and shall I say *slight* cynicism. I look forward to this class over all my others. I wish we had longer periods b/c we just get into things and have to leave. Awesome teacher.
I love AP-the highlight of my day both for the info and Barry. He is very entertaining and explains things in a way that makes it all make sense. def worth my time and effort. outlining sucks though
Good teacher that will make you think and analyze things. Good challenge. But now that I am in college I know that he his nothing like a college professor. Oh well. '05
Very smart man, very witty. He holds his AP classes to a very high standard, to a point where it's a little unfair. You're expected to do the reading and studying completely outside of class in AP US History, and classtime is more of a complement to your studying. I opened the book three times the entire year and got a B and didn't do well on the test, but that part's on me.
Does look down upon students who are not Albert Einsteins. Maybe some of us take AP for the challenge and to learn something, not to be put down because we arent geniuses
GREAT teacher. Anyone who does not succeed in his classes just is not putting in the effort. Makes you actually want to learn for once instead of just going through the exercises of passing a class. If I were grading, an easy A+. Class of 99'.
Cool guy. Hes realistic about his expectations although he does grade pretty hard. I failed his final and got a D in the class, but i didn't really try. still a good guy
I had AP US with Barry in '00. He was an enthusiastic teacher, but often times seemed to look down upon the students that didn't do as well in his class. With time, most of our class started to resent him, because of this condescending attitude.
Mr. barry is possibly the greatest teacher in the school. I am tired of those who say he is a "jerk." Lighten up and get a sense of humor. Sorry. He is engaging, challenging and brings humor to the class. He makes AP fun!
Def a great teacher, i enjoyed World history II with him so much that i took sociology just to have him and i def don't regret it. Great teacher and great teaching style.
i took ap us with him in '99 and came out knowing more facts about his personal life than about history. difficult class though. i think he knew that i hated hi
Awesome teacher, gets stuff done, but he does waste some time, not always a bad thing
I had Barry for AP US History around 1994. I remember him as tremedously enthusastic, engaging, and an overall pretty funny guy. I never liked History until I
John Barry is the best teacher I've ever had at any level. To go to ARHS and not take AP History with him is a sin against your own education. Class of 97.
Took sociology....Interesting course, Barry's a really good guy, has alot to teach. This course wasn't bad, but I hear AP History is a beast
the cringing chicken...he brings the Jesus...and so much tomato sauce that we will all PERISH!!! good guy overall
i took barry for sociology, and it was one of the best courses i've ever taken. he was interesting and personal, though sometimes he shared too much.
His class was really tough but his intense AP test review session helped me earn a 5.
a teacher can be fun, challenging, and interesting without being arrogant and mean. Not this 1!
The only teacher who teaches an AP class like a true college course.. but it is sooo hard! Still, he is a phenomenal teacher
Ingaging, passionate, humourous.Obviously loves his job. Most students are polarised, but I think all can appreciate his passion for history & most are swayed by it
I've been out of school fo r5 years, but this guy was my fav!! Glad to know he is still around, enjoy!!
Great Guy, a fun and challenging college-prep class.
very fun class--- almost entirely a class of debate---but very challenging
