His class was very difficult... if I had had Mr. Powers I definitely would've gotten an A, but I'm glad I had Mr. Valassidis because he taught me more than any other teacher I've ever had :)
Although my essaying writing did get a whole lot better, i sacrificed my GPA by getting b's both semester. Since i'm more a math person, i personally do recommend to take this class if u are talkative and consider urself a writer, but if you are more like me, maybe reconsider it. It was very stressful, but, in the end, i think i learned a bunch on how to write good essays.
Literally the best teacher at LCHS. He is tough, has hard classes but motivates his students to learn. He believes in his student's capabilities and lets them know he believes in them. He challenges them and leads them to believe they can and will be able to meet his high standards. But he is caring and supportive, too. Kind and warm. He is the epitome of a great teacher.
I had Mr. V a year ago (2015/2016) and I could easily say that he was the best teacher I've ever had. I was pretty quiet in class, as I preferred to just listen to others debate. He is tough with essay-grading, but he does it to prepare you for his "two-year" project -- he wishes everyone to succeed not only in his class and high school in general, but also in the workforce. He challenged me to think hard and to be brave, while also keeping the classroom atmosphere comfortable. Thank you, Mr. V!
Mr. V is a teacher who wants to teach you to think and he is willing to help you get there. But if you aren't one of the smart kids in the beginning of the year, your life will be over. Even a B will not be within your range. However, he will prepare you better than anything you've ever had. But I mean are we all going to major in Political science or philosophy or literature?
Best teacher I've had at LC. He is very different from your average English teacher in that he actually analyzes the text in depth, and provokes analytical thinking in a Socratic seminar style class. Do your homework well, RESEARCH THE TOPICS, and participate and take notes in class. The assessments are essays and quizzes which occur quite often. If you have a coherent argument with sufficient evidence and advanced style, you will do well. Keep in mind, one will build their style with time.
He is so hard to understand. Most of the time I have no idea what is going on. Idk if this is a me problem but I think I'm going to fail the AP test.
Mr. V's class is the most thought-provoking, refreshing English class I've had. His format - discussion-oriented, analytical teaching - carries over in our essays, and the depth of knowledge he encourages has truly helped me develop my argumentation.
5 assignments for the quarter - really? Nothing graded in over a month - how is that fair Mr. V?
Mr. Valassidis is an amazing teacher.
Words literally cannot describe how amazing he is. I've had him both sophomore and junior year and he's without a doubt helped me grow into a great writer and more importantly thinker. He goes above and beyond in so many ways and even though he does grade harshly, you can tell it comes from a place of respect because he truly believes in our abilities. He treats every student and their opinion with an absolute respect so rarely found, even if he does show it through debate sometimes. DONT GO PLZ
As an LCHS graduate looking back on my time in high school, Mr. V was the best teacher i've ever had in all of my years of schooling. He facilitates meaningful discussion about pressing and relevant topics. Teaching students how to write is really hard because it's a matter of teaching people how to think and Mr. V is the best teacher for that job. Yes his class is challenging but trust me you'll be thankful you were challenged in the future.
I have Mr. V right now for Honors English & I had Ms. Pelletier last year for 9th grade. I would say that I was intimidated by Mr. V on the first day of school, but never again! He cares for his students and is willing to help them succeed. His teaching style is similar to Ms. Pelletier's, but they have different personalities -- I cannot say which one is kinder, because they are both excellent teachers who leave lasting impacts on their students.
Mr. V and his class have been two of the greatest experiences in my life. I truly thank him for all that he has done for me. He is a great great great great GREAT teacher and friend. People complain about how hard his class is and how mean he is but he is an amazing person. The secrets to his class are to work hard, keep improving, talk in class, and be open minded.
Mr. V is a great guy and he has taught me so much. Yeah, people will say he's too hard and mean and arrogant, but a lot of times it's because they're not willing to put in the extra work. I love JV!
Ok yeah he's smart and your English does improve, BUT he can be a bit mean. He's just harsh, loosen up?
He has a reputation to be the best teacher ever buy he is so full of himself. I hate him he's so damn arrogant.
I love V. If you want to improve as a writer, he is willing to help you, but only if you put in the time. He is very smart, but a tad self-conscious. I will never forget him.
Mr. V is a very hard teacher. He is probably the smartest teacher on campus but he does have his downfalls. Although he is a very good writer, he doesn't really teach his students HOW to write. All he does is gives us in-class essays... basically trial and error. he also plays favorites with grading essays and projects. but he is a great teacher and definitely an experience to have if you go to LCHS.
Mr V is by far and away one of the most intelligent people I know. For his AP class, it's almost impossible to receive an A first semester, but a handful of students manage in his honors class. It may be a lot of work, but trust me, do not switch out of his class. You are much more prepared for future english classes with experience in his class. Although he is very intimidating at first, the key is to volunteer and to ask for help. His favorite students are the ones that challenge themselves.
This is the best class I have ever taken. All you need to do is work hard/care and you will do well in his class. He pretty much taught me to write and sincerely cares about his students.
It's a good class if you're willing to learn. V taught us so much, not only English, but life lessons as well. He's a great teacher and person to get to know! Must take his class before you graduate!
Mr. V. is truly amazing! He has made me a great writer and I am so grateful for that. He is always there to talk to, as a teacher and as a friend.
Best English teacher I've ever had. I'm not degrading the other English teachers, but I'm just saying he's that great. My English has improved a ton.
V is an amazing teacher! I've had him for two years (9th grade and 11th grade) and I've learned more than I ever thought I could. He inspired me to not only love English but also appreciate learning.
V is the most complex person I have ever met. He has a casual, almost joking side, but can also dominate a class with ease. He is an expert on everything, but that could just be his debating skills. Intimidating at first, but once you get past that, you will see he is one of the nicest teachers at LC. He is always there for you, before school, after school, during school, whenever you need him. What he teaches goes so much farther than what he is paid for. He doesnt just teach English. He changes lives. but
Absolutely the most influential and moving teacher i have ever had. His lessons captivate you on your most exhausting days. Even though he may seem a little (jk, a lot) intimidating at first, you will grow to love him and his class. He has allowed me to explore the world of literature with a whole new perspective. Dedication to the class is a requirement. If you don't have the time for V, don't even bother being in his class!
Inspirational and impelling! Not only have my English skills soared, but he has also expanded my views on everything. He has taught me how to write, analyze, argue, and articulate my points beyond doubt. If you can dedicate the time, you take away so much more than what you can even envision.
Either you love V or you hate him. He shows how much he likes you by arguing with you because he respects your opinion. It's V's way or the highway, but he forces you to start caring, which is good.
Amazing teacher, but is a very challenging class. After his class, my english grade in star increased so much and was higher than my math for the first time. Very helpful, very engaging, knows what he is talking about. However, he is a bit intimidating./
Mr. V is a phenomenal English teacher. I've learned so much from him throughout the course of this year. Although he may pick you out and rip you apart at times, you come out more enlightened and brighter. He helps you realize things that you might never have caught and truly elaborates on the topic to make positive that you fully grasp it. By far, the greatest teacher I have ever had. I've never learned so much about English, life, and myself in all my years as a student. Thank you Mr. V!!!!
This man is a revolutionary english teacher who, without a doubt, goes beyond the requirements of the classroom.
Mr. V is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He doesn't do any of the stupid busywork that other teachers do (for example statues). He is very flexible and willing to work with you if you are having a problem. He's so nice so don't be intimidated by him at first! He's young so he's easy to relate to, which is nice. Love you Mr. V!
The man is hard especially in first semester, but you are well prepared for the essay once the AP exam comes up. He's always in his classroom for help although he didn't go to him much. Also note that his class is really interesting. There are days that I sleep at 3 or 4 AM and while I'm struggling to stay awake in other classes, I'm wide awake in his class (and it's not because he'll wake you up !)
He is a great teacher. Although he might be one of the hardest english teachers, i still look forward to his class each day. I used to be afraid of doing an essay a month, but now thanks to Mr. V, I am used to writing essays, they are better, and I even look forward to them some times. Great job Mr. V, you're a great teacher. Keep it up!
He is most definitely the best English teacher i have ever had. although we write a lot of essays, it has improved my writing and made me more confident. YAY MR. V!!!!!!!!!!! he makes junior year a whole lot more tolerable and i look forward to his class everyday :-)
justin valassidis is the most reasonable and incredible teacher I'VE EVER had in my whole learning career. i am so glad he came when i was a jr. he made me thrive to work my hardest. it's not an easy class, but it's one i looked forward to every day. i hope to find a professor like him in college. he's definitely and unforgettable teacher. love you v! yaso! or however you spell it in greek. haha :) expect another christmas present even tho i've graduated!
Wow! If you have Mr. V, consider yourself lucky. He's an inspiration to writers and non-writers alike. His approach is unique and wonderfully improvised. I'm so sorry not to have him next year. Don't be intimidated by him! He can be very understanding and fun.
best there is. i wish i were still in his class. i love V!
best english teacher ever, in fact best everyhting teacher ever. great class with hardly any busywork. he explains everythnig very clearl y too.
He is SUCH a great teacher. He makes the class really exciting. Even though there are a lot of essays, I think that we will all be prepared for Honors and AP classes.
good teacher. nice and kind. class is intersting. a lot of essays
in class essays were tough, but he's the greatest teacher i've had so far. my writing skills have improved so much, essays are easier to write now, ABSOLUTELY NO BUSYWORK. all work has a purpose, there's no wasted time spent filling out worksheets or anything. NO GRAMMAR. awesome. just essays and novels, no problems there.... and extra credit for bringing in creatively related foods on movie days!
Mr. V is a GREAT teacher. A few years ago, Mr. V had inspirated my son to work hard and achieve to his full potential. Thanks to Mr. V, my son is going to Caltech this fall.
it's a challenging class but he is a great teacher and awesome person.
OMG he is the best! We have soo much fun with him teaching English! I hope he stays forever... or a least until i'm out of high school. HE knows when to have fun and when to focus on work. We always have great conversations with him when discusing our books... i really like that we get really into the book and analize everything about it.
Mr. V is a fantastic teacher. He knows his subject and you can learn lots from him. Eventhough he makes you write a lot in class, it's all for the better in the long run.
Mr. V was the best English teacher at Arcadia High School. A great teacher. We all miss him. The students at La Canada High School are so lucky to have Mr. V as their English teacher.
Mr. V is a great teacher. We all love and respect him.
He is the best. He makes us write alot of essays though. But other tha that he is the best. I really love him. And cuz he is younger than other teachers he is still able to relate to us. I great funtalking to him. THE BEST ENLGISH TEACHER EVER AWARD goes to.... drum role please.... MR.V!!!! YEAH!

Yes! I agree that Mr. Valassidia is a great teacher! We learn a lot from him.
