One of the hardest classes you'll take simply based on work load but the most useful class I've ever taken. I would work 3-5 hours a night on homework, but due to this I became a much better writer, and more thoughtful person. Hekler forces you to look at everything from a different view, develop new views, not the views your parents taught you. I attribute my college success to this man.
Mr. Hekler is an extremely intelligent man. Although he takes months to grade essays and papers, he gives a ton of feedback and comments when he does hand them back, which is extremely helpful towards helping understand why you received the grade you did and what you need to work on in the future.
While he is prone to terrible mood swings that can sometimes make him impossible to deal with. He usually is a very smart person who is easy to talk to 1 on 1.
I scored a perfect 5 on the AP exam last year. All of my friends got 5s, too. I heard his classes did the best of all the other sections. (4.25) We had an amazing year of deep discussions about difficult topics. It's a class on rhetoric, and he often plays devil's advocate, & if you didn't get that, it's on you. The work load was not so crushing as APush. If by moody you mean he gets annoyed when half the class doesn't do the reading, then yes. But also hilarious, and caring! Be fair! He is.
Mr. Hekler has been incredibly fair and understanding of the individual needs of my child. He has been extremely accessible and proactive. He has always been available to my child for extra help after school, and his online syllabus which he updates daily has been extremely helpful, unlike so many teacher websites that are not kept up.
Mr. Hekler is moody and unpredictable. He doesn't grade on a timely basis. While he he witty and charming, this doesn't make up for true work. Teachers need to work as hard as their students.
Talks A LOT. You can tell he wants all his students to succeed, but classes are boring and essay instructions are either unclear or too rigid. Go after school to get help, he's much less intimidating in person. Takes months to grade each essay. I hope you like lectures.
He likes to hear the sound of his own voice. I've had multiple classes where he stands at the front and talks at us. Sometimes has interesting lessons, but ruins them w/ pointless busy work, or his constant need to share his opinion and prove how smart he his. Can be tempremental. Assigns lots of work and grades 10% of it. Doesn't really teach the AP concepts needed for the test. Considers himself (straight, white, Christian, male w/ a job) unprivileged which is a problem considering the course
Hekler's the kind of guy you're either gonna love or hate as a teacher. Yes, he can be a little quirky, but there's no doubting his brilliance. He had an extremely tough assignment with what my class was (Senior standard, kids can't read, and different assistant teacher every month.) But he was able to get through it and make a lot of kids happy who aren't used to success in the classroom. Very honest, liberal man who will tell you how the world really works.
Mr. Hekler is very smart and willing to help students. He is a bit of a tough grader, but he will teach you a TON. He is nice and his class is always interesting. The worst thing is that he is super slow at grading things (it could take a few months for him to grade papers), but overall he is a great teacher
Fair. Creative. Spontaneous. Funny. A great class in which I learned so much, particularly how to articulate a well-argued position which helped me even through law school!
A great class! Class was always interesting. My writing improved so much, which really prepared me for college. He was very understanding when I needed help or an extension.
I have a lot of respect for this man. He's brilliant, a great human being, and if you make it out of his class you'll learn an incredible amount. He makes you work hard, but it's worth it. He's also very helpful one-on-one, I recommend going after school as he can be intimidating in class but he's super sweet in person
One of the best teachers I've had, including my college professors. He taught me not only how to write with precision, he taught me how to think and articulate those thoughts with precision. Seriousl
he grades with emotion. one day, he'll give the whole class an A, and another he'll give everyone Cs just because he's angry about something. he should leave his personal life out of teaching.
Hekler is the man, really funny and an individual. He's a tough teacher but deal with it, he doesn't give us work we can't handle.. expect for the JRP (was harder than my college english class essays)
bad time management and mood swings, not a great combo
Class taught me how to analyze, how to write, and a boat load about American Lit. and culture. Need I say more?
I loved Mr. Hekler. A lot of people say he's tough, but you've just got to work hard. Hands down best English teacher I've ever had. He's a riot, and his class is a lot of fun.
heckler gets a bad rap hes a good but tough teacher, my class went through alot that year and my college entrance essay is the only thing that got me into school
I love mr hekler. he is harshly realistic, but i'm a much better writer upon finishing his course. He will love you if you have strong opinions about something, even if they aren't similar to his own.
I have him for a study. Sometimes he is funny, but sometimes he is upright nasty and thinks he is the most important person in the room. He tells us not to talk while he talks loud and is disruptive.
Great and knowledgeable teacher overall, very cynical and liberal, he often goes on rants against "the man" and modern culture which are interesting. Take it all with a grain of salt, though.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. Fair, tough, funny, compassionate. I feel a sense of accomplishment for having worked hard in his class.
he threw a desk at someone today and it broke in half...BUTi loved his class hes da man!!!!!!!!!!
great teacher but gpa ruiner. a very talented teacher but needs to cut down on the homework load and grade more easily
mr hekler is hilarious. he does have a weirdish personality and can be a little intimidating and awkard, but he is a really good human being in my opinion. good values and rightfully opinionated. LOVE
after mrs leonard, hes one of the BEST english teachers out there. Hes funny and probably one of the smartest teachers in that building. He makes english AMAZING!
Hilariously merciless, but genuinely wants you to do well. He's a great guy and extremely helpful once you get past his in-class intimidation. You'll do well if you work hard and take his criticism.
great sense of humor, great teacher, and great guy overall. he wants to help you succeed in life, it's teachers like him who have enabled me to write so well than so many of my classmates in college.
He has two personnas: one in class and one in person. One-on-one he's extremely helpful. In class he's ruthless. He doesn't give anything away; you have to EARN it. I'm a much better writer now!
Tough grader, good luck getting an A. Sarcastic and hillarious. His class is very fun. Not going to help your GPA though. You will come out of his class knowing how to read into things and write well.
very cool guy. Even better class...not so good at directing...
HIS AP ENGLISH COURSE WAS TOUGH BUT HE IS A OVERRALL A GREAT TEACHER! LEARNED A LOT BUT HE DEF HAS TO WORK ON GRADING PAPERS ON TIME! HEAVY WORKLOAD BUT AWESOME CLASS!
An awesome class. Much work but very worthwhile. Sooooooo funny! I'll miss tha class.
He helped my writing immensely. He taught me how to look at things critically. He is ridicuously funny, too. I loved that class.
very funyn guy...does keep class interesting - can get a little moody and rabid though. but hek-dawg is the man
Best english teacher I've ever had wish i could've had him for more than 4 months but a bit too much work. Great discussions, best i've heard in school so far
Didn't like him at the start of school cuz he gave a ton of work and his class is hard, but help after school from him is fantastic and i've grown to like him.
I have never learned so much or been so challenged by any other teacher. I think he enables us to do all the work he assigns since we know he works so hard, too
nice guy out of class, gets offended easily, and assigns a ridiculous amount of homework
He's helped me sooo much. My writting will actuallly get me into college.
Funny guy, and makes the class interesting. Was my favorite class last year. He said out loud to a girl Your average is four times ten
70 pages a night and if you complain... a lecture too
heklers class was the most fun class i had last year. ive never laughed that much in any of the classes ive ever had. i heard he changed though :( thast too bad
