Mr. Kennedy's class was the hardest I took at South. I had him in 2015-16 and his class vastly improved my writing. People who switch out are those who do not want to try. People who complain don't work hard enough. If you meet with him, he will help you. Listen to what he says in class - it's the key to success. He's brilliant. He doesn't want you to have "his" answer, he wants you to think critically. Work hard and accept his writing techniques, because he's developed them for a reason.
I had Mr. Kennedy in 2011 and let me tell you the comments about how hard he is are accurate. However, his class made getting a Bachelors in English a piece of cake. If you talk to Mr. Kennedy one on one you'll realize he really isn't that bad as a person. But as a teacher he expects nothing but perfection that even her can not live up to.
Mr.Kennedy's class is like Sparta for English students. Taking an English class has never been so agonizing. Mr.K's Honors Junior English class made me curse my own art form daily. I had mental breakdowns every single week. I despised the class so much. HOWEVER, Mr.Kennedy is not a bad person. He's very genuine, extremely intelligent, and passionate as all hell about what he teaches. I would say drop out if you get him, but I've never improved so much in a single year. It's hard, but worth it.
Mr.Kennedy, more like Mr.Oswald cuz he assassinated my GPA. But on a more serious note here are some tips.
1.Actually have done the summer reading and more importantly extra reading (the extra books you read over the summer which he makes write about)
2.If you have the opportunity to switch out of his class, do it (even moving up to honors is better than him)
3.His first term is the only time he's nice, so that no one switches out. So if you don't hate him at first in 3 months you will
He is an english teacher that actually teaches his students how to write. He made me a better writer. The grade will come, listen to what he says during class... everything is important and helpful

Hands down the best teacher at Newton South. Not only does he teach you relevant materials in class that builds on each past assignment, but he understands the bigger picture and trains each student not only to grow as a writer and reader but to prepare for SAT's and ACT's. His understanding of the college admissions process allows students to better prepare for this important step in their student careers. I will forever be thankful for Mr. Kennedy and his teaching.
To anyone who reads these comments, do not heed the negative ones. This is one of the best teachers at Newton South, and you should be fortunate to have him. I took his class my Junior year and it has paid dividends. Mr. Kennedy taught me how to write coherently, using a variety of writing techniques, to push my learning, and others' learning, to a new level. He is a nice guy, he wrote my college letter of recommendation, and he is deserving of higher marks then what has been given to him here.
Probably the worst teacher and person I have ever encountered. An extremely lazy grader as he has his students grade many tests and quizes. He also provides no direction on assignments and students are often scrambling to figure out what we even have to turn in. Class time is often a waste as he uses it to connect books to his political views and tries to inflict them on the students. Arrogant and pretentious we have learned more about his stupid political groups (Eg: KONY 2012) than english.
I really enjoyed being in Mr. Kennedys class this year, since he really helped me become a better writer and even though some people say that he's somewhat harder than all the other teachers, I like that since it enables me to challenge myself in a way that i only could in Mr. Kennedy's class. From reading 1984 to watching the Dead poets society, it has bee a huge pleasure to be in Mr. Kennedy's class.
A very stuck-up, arrogant and often self-contradictory person. If you have him as a teacher you will hate your life. It seems like you learn a lot in his class, but in reality you do not. He has the ability to fill up class time by going on seemingly relevant topics, which provide no help/use.
Mr Kennedy is actually amazing. People always complain because he can be tough, but he helps us soo much.
I had Mr. Kennedy while I was in high school. I hated him more than any teacher I had ever had, and wished every bad thing upon him. But looking back on it 2 years later, Kennedy made a great writer and reader out of me. I learned to comprehend writing in ways I never had before, and my writing became flawless and articulate. He helped me to score highly on my SAT's and ace my college writing class. Take this class; you'll hate your life, but it will all pay off in the long run.
I have never liked English, but after going through junior year with him, my reading and writing skills improved drastically. You'll realize how much you've learned by the end of the year. I wish he t
I had heard he was the hardest teacher at South, while he is hard, I don't think I have ever learned more in an English class. He is also extremely smart, kind, and wants you to succeed, even if he do
I like Mr. Kennedy, but he can be very unclear, and like all English teachers at South, is bery A-stingy.
hes really not a bad teacher! hes very tough and he rarely follows his syllabus, but he really cares for his students and wants them to succeed! hes always very helpful when you go j block
can be a bit tough at times but he is a good teacher despite his attitude. he really cares for students getting into colleges, and really pushes us hard to succeed
Worst teacher I have ever had. He is inappropriate with his students, picks favorites, and basically does grades randomly. GET OUT OF HIS CLASS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
Mr.. Kennedy is a difficult teacher but it is all in our best interest.out of my 12 yrs of school he is definitely the one i learned the most from.he is also really helpful when it comes to talking about college...2 thumbs up
This guy is the worst teacher I've ever had. Doesn't respect students, his teaching is useless. Has some serious personality problems, he refused to meet with parents over a serious issue. Avoid!
Upon entering his classroom, the sight of analyzing literature terrified myslef, causing much distress. My experience - including writing essays - were great. Us, as a class, also learned grammmar to.
he was probably the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. He wants everything done his way and wants everyone to think like him and be like him. I HATE HIM
Mr. Kennedy came back and people are complaining? Kennedy is definately not easy, but some of the best things never are. Goes outside the text, always enlightening..
a smart man who intends to help. overuses the "graduated harvard" card to try to convince the students that he is right. he usually isn't. self-centered. avoid him like the plague.
Watch out what you listen to in his class. Most of his "literary analysis" is stuff he makes up that has nothing to do with the author's intention; not everything has deeper meanin
use your brain. he's a great person and helped me learn to comprehend and write better. he also helped me through some tough times. be honest and don't be afraid to speak up.
I learned SO much from this man--a wonderful, erudite teacher. He is indeed moody, but I am as well; I can't complain.
I miss Kennedy! Even though I'm not at south anymore, I hope he comes back. And the swim team could really use him back too!
Mr. Kennedy is an awesome guy. I had him as a coach as well and is not only is he helpful, but he's funny too. I can't wait until he comes back.
