Awesome experience. Took composition and he could tell my abilities were above those of the class, and let me drop and do an independent study with him instead. He treats you like a college student and prepares you for university well.
I learned a lot from his classes, he's a brilliant teacher
all I can say is, the people who didn't like him didn't like him because they couldn't and probably still can't read and write.
Hindley should not be teaching. Though I can appreciate his love of literature and obvious success but he has absolutely no respect for his students and seems to take pleasure in belittling them.
At first he seems to be a very difficult teacher. Do not expect to do well on your first paper. However, once you master is simple formula, every paper becomes very easy.
Committed to the rigors and toil of writing, and the rewards inherent in mastering the form. Inspring, iconoclastic, irreverant, difficult, hilarious, vulnerable in a way, and unforgettable. Thank you
Easily the most inspiring teacher I have ever had. He will make you work for you grade but this is highly rewarding. I learned more from Mr. Hindley than from any other English teacher to date.
Mr. Hindley pulled our son's english education at Punahou together, taught him to care & work hard. Not easy, not nurturing, but awesome teacher for students willing to work and put their ego aside.
Just a response to the haters - grow a spine. Read the literature, take a stand, and back it up! Hindley's gauntlet builds character - a virtue sorely lacking among many a coddled Pun today.
One of the worst teachers I ever had. I dropped his class with pleasure. He's stuck-up, has a massive superiority complex and fails to inspire anything in his students except sneering resentment.
Although Norman Hindley is a very intelligent man, his neurosis get in the way of his potential teaching skills. He purposefully brings students down so he can then "fix" them and pat himself on the back. He is condescending and insecure, and the only way to get an A in his class is to parrot his beliefs.
i am now friends with the oxford english dictionary thanks to mr. hindley. he reminded me of grumpy the dwarf in snow white, but he is my favorite teacher of all time. he's the only teacher in punahou unafraid of giving people f's. give em what they deserve! i wish he was my grandpa... haahhaha. i'd be well versed in emerson, thats for sure.
great teacher, but i had nightmares the semester after his class! it was a necessary but painful experience. I'm glad I had the chance to be in his class, but didn't like him personally.
Should not be working with young people; his conduct and character are not those that one would wish in a teacher.M. Whitson
he doesnt play favorites, he recognizes effort. talk in class, do the reading, see him constantly, name drop etc and most importantly pay attention. show some interest.
I had him as an English teacher in Massachusetts in 1971 and he is still one of the best teacher I ever had. Good to see he's still at it. He is encouraging to writers and artists
Mr. HIndley thankyou soo much for having such patience and sharing your amazing incite. I want to go to Italy and tell them that I am a poet so that they will give me wine!
I love you, Mr. Hindley! You approach everything so freshly and directly, and it rubs off on your students. Buy yourself a duffel bag so I can tote you to college with me.
The best english teacher I've ever had. He really wants his students to succeed and prepares them well. You can't really appreciate Shakespeare until you read it with Hindley.
You'll really learn to write and read in his classes. By far, the best English teacher ever.
I don't know if he's teaching or not still but he is the best english teacher I EVER had. KEEP HIS HANDOUTS. THEY WILL HELP YOU. I'm a sophomore in college
a teacher. a mentor. he brings tears to my eyes. ALL HAIL THE KING!!! (says Ackerman)
uncle norman stylin w/tha burberry tie! he is the epitome of what a great english teacher should be like! i learnd sooo sooo much from him!:)
ah uncle norm, a good man but really should watch his back or he'll be joining his beloved emily, so says the norton anthology...
a very approachable understanding guy, willing to give extensions, and willing to help the student improve.
Hes a nice guy, hes kind of out there, and boy do you learn how to write
An A on a Hindley pap deserves a party!Remember the pizza pie not just the box!
hindley's awesome! u learn sooo much, its hard work but its worth it
super hard, calls you pathetic and makes you want to proove him wrong
Best teacher I've ever had. On the level of college professors.
I've never learned as much froma teacher... he grades you on YOUR best
Improved my writing, funny, smart, best english teach i ever had
Mr. Hindley turned english from worst to best subject.
coolest teacher i've ever had...makes me think and want to learn
He's super funny and doesn't call anyone by their first name.
He is hilarious, and if you know how to read him, EASY!
Hindley knows whats up. Incredible. Take his P&D class!
Although he is strict, he can teach you so much about English.
plays favorites, is close-minded about writing styles&literary interpretations.
one of the hardest teachers that taught me the most...he's awesome
Great teacher. Big heart. He is always willing to help. Conferences are a must
One of the best teachers i've ever had. taught me so much, great mentor :)
He is one of the hardest teachers out there, yet one of the best.
One of the hardest teachers I have ever had but he's one of the most intelligent
I liked him, even if the categlory ratings don't show it.
He has thaught me more about writting than any Prof. in college.
he's demanding, but the rewards make the effort well worth it
Mr. Hindley is a great teacher, unless you are easily angered! :)
Even though Mr. Hindley made my cry in class I still got a 4 on the AP test
