Had Toma for AB Calc back in 2011-2012. One of the best educators I've ever had. Hilarious in class and a one of my favorite teachers to run into in my post-Paly life. A straight-shooter who challenges his students and expects a lot from them. I struggled with calc all year...thought the AP test would be pointless and when I didn't register, Toma tracked me down and encouraged me to take it...I thought I'd learned nothing and ended up with a 4 and college credit. One of Paly's finest!
Mr. Toma is truly one of the teachers that makes PALY amazing! He is extremely knowledgeable, made us think beyond the textbook, and really challenged us. I would recommend staying a lesson ahead of the class, as in doing the homework the night before it will be covered in class. That way, you don't have to rush to get the content and you can appreciate the lesson more.
Beyond being a great teacher, Mr. Toma is a fantastic person and I am very lucky to know him.
Mr Toma is highly knowledgeable, but makes himself very difficult to approach and can be abrasive and demeaning in class.
Such a funny teacher. Laugh at his jokes. "God bless America. For gods sake. At this stage of my life this class was a "piece of cake" WOOHOO! Huh? My grandmother! For heavens sake. Rubbish! Splendid. Genius!"
The king. I had Toma back in 09-10 for AB Calc. God, what a teacher. Paly is blessed with great teachers, but Toma is awesome. It was one of my favorite classes ever, and I came out of it with a mastery of the material. If you get Radu, you've lucked out.
Strict but great teacher.
Mr. Toma is the best. He's extremely funny and also a very good teacher. He can seem strict at times, but he's a good guy. Also, his classes are pretty hard.
he is a good teacher and pretty funny and knowledgeable.
god bless america
Mr. Toma makes BC Calculus fun and more importantly, intuitive. He encourages us to understand the derivations of certain formulas instead of just memorizing them. Additionally, he is very lively and occasionally cracks the whole class up. All in all, knowledgeable and funny math teacher.
Mr. Toma gets the job done. He lectures well and provides exams that are more on the challenging side but still a relief after the tests last year. Don't be intimidated by him or the class, study and you'll do fine.
I both dread and adore this class. While BC is by no means an easy course (getting tests back is typically not very fun), Mr. Toma makes class entertaining while still explaining material well; I understood concepts from last year significantly more clearly this year, largely due to Toma's teaching. The class is challenging but pretty fair, and I feel like we're being well prepared for the AP test. He obviously loves math, and his enthusiasm in general is much appreciated. God bless, Radu <3
Funny. Class is definitely fair. Good at explaining math.
Challenging, but rewarding class. I feel like I am learning a lot, though it means there tons of homework and tough tests.
Terrible Advisor - does not help students. Intimidating, impatient, and only cares about teaching math. He won't allow students to make changes to their schedules so go around him and speak to a counselor for help.
Best math teacher at Paly. Proves crystal clear all the meaningful theorems in Calc BC and manages to be funny at it too! Everyone I know in our class passed the BC Calc exam with a 5...
I had mixed feelings about Calc AB overall (simultaneously fascinating and frustrating), but I loved Mr. Toma. This is a guy who knows what he's doing and teaches with real enthusiasm, conveying the beauty of mathematics like few can. His coursework is difficult, but it's worth it. The man is also very good for a laugh.
My experience in Mr. Toma's AB Calc class was one of my best at Paly. He can be intense, but once you get the chance to know him, you'll see he is one of the most funny and thoughtful teachers at Paly. He is beyond knowledgable and sees his students performance as a reflection of his teaching, so he sets the bar high. However, as a non-star student, I can attest to his attentiveness to my struggles and subsequent encouragement and helpfulness. Truly a class act, you are lucky if you have him.
Best math teacher I ever had. His AB Calc course is not easy, but you'll learn more in it than in any other math class you've ever taken.
Mr. Toma is someone that other teachers, who are just difficult because they think that's what makes a quality educator, aspire to be. His class is hard, but he obviously mastered the subject and can
FANTASTIC MATH TEACHER! one of, if not, the best. He's intimidating, but once you get to know him, he has the best personality ever.
hes an amazing teacher and a really good advisor as well
A challenging and motivating math teacher. Students should expect to work hard in his class, but to learn a lot as well as to gain a deep appreciation for math.
I love Mr. Toma because he says Mathemathics. and i luv it.
I am soon to finish my degree in electrical engineering and feel safe in saying Toma gave the most challenging course I ever have taken (BC Calc). Get a solid foundation in this material with Toma!
by far the best math teacher i have EVER had. definitely knows what he is doing. teaches conceptually, a foreign language to most math teachers born here. hard, but if you work, it's fine. funny guy.
His daily lectures and handwriting are an eyesore. drone can lead to drowsiness. difficult tests. only good part about his class is the occasional joke.
Mr. Toma is arrogant and totally unhelpful. He is never available during his prep periods and brushes you off when you ask for help. His grading is not particualry fair either.
He's the kind of teacher who lets you kind of goof off in his class, as long as you realize you're getting a C on the next test. He's very demanding but very nice. Funny, too.
used to this think guy was the scariest person at paly; probably the worst student in his class but I'm SO grateful i had him 'cause college math is a joke compared to his class.
This guy is awesome, once I got to UCSB I got A's in every math class through part dif eq's(6 quarters). If you have any interest in science or engineering pay attention, brilliant
calc is a hard class, but he does all he can to help and teach you. willing to help. You can't really blame him for not doing well because calc is just FREAKSIHLY HARD.
mr tomas really cool, i like his class and hes pretty helpful. he can be pretty helpful and i love his accent! lol.
He's a good teacher if you're smart even tho he;s intimidating but its hard to ask him questions.. especially if you're not smart.
Mr. Toma is the best math teacher in Paly. His classes aren't supposed to be easy, and that's why he'll make fun of you if you whine.
Very funny teacher. Does anyone notice his sarcasm when someone complains. His style of teaching is very much accomplished and I wouldn't want another teacher
He lets you do whatever you want and doesn't care if you pay attention because everything he says is in the book anyways.
don't pick this guy as your advisor unless you take his class or are a math nerd. he scares me.
Very hard, and he doesn't explain things too well. If you are struggling, he doesn't know how to explain things in a different way so that you can understand.
he is an awesome teacher, you can understand what he is talking about, and they way he explains things are easy to understand.. guaranted A in his class...
