Mr. Rose is honestly an amazing teacher. He knows so much about computer science and I love how he relates to his many experiences which gives us context on how we can use compsci. His foundations class is pretty easy and he has a lot of respect for students who do well on tests, even congratulating them in front of the class. His rules are reasonable (like no water in the lab, don't be late, etc.) but people just get scared of him because he gets to angry if you don't follow them. Hes great tbh
Mr. Rose, surprisingly, is one of the nicest teachers I've ever had yet, believe it or not! This is coming from a student who has him in Summer School Foundations of Computer Science. I love him because(at least during the summer) he always puts on a smile everyday(but sometimes has a serious face, ofc) is really supportive because he comes around and checks if we're ok on the labs, we are ALLOWED ask him any type of question anytime. Follow and keep his RULES, he's quite serious about them!
He makes cs very difficult because of his teaching style. Will not help with any assignments.
Mr. Rose is one of the best cs teachers! He's helpful and really knows what he's doing, plus his class is fair and theres not much homework. I really enjoyed cs with him, and I'm really happy I got to have him!
He was an ok teacher. He does not explain much, so you need to teach yourself a lot of the topics. I enjoyed computer team, though, as he was much more relaxed in that setting.
At first I was absolutely terrified of him... But throughout the year I realized what a cool guy he actually is. He is extremely fair and will give help if you need it. I personally learned a lot from him. Just a little advice for incoming students - NEVER pull out your phone, NEVER have an food or drinks in his line of sight, and the labs will save you.
Not a very helpful teacher...very strict on rules and has no regard for student advocacy of any kind. Only cares about wumpus
Mr. Rose is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He makes asking a question so difficult that people don't do it. For a CS teacher he is very close minded to personal devices and will leave u outside in sub freezing weather if you are a second late to class. He doesn't teach at all and all he does during class is sit on his computer and look at pictures of planes and boots.
If you take Accelerated, the class takes the daily quiz, then he hands out papers, talks for a minute or two, and then everyone goes to the lab. Beware of the tests (KD's) after the 1st unit he stops announcing them and just gives them randomly. He is pretty strict, (don't be late, don't ever pull out your phone) and measures everything in seconds.
Can't speak for foundations, but Accelerated is basically all labs so his teaching style doesn't really matter. Don't expect any help on the labs.
like a previous review said, don't judge mr. rose on what he acts like on the outside. just from the way he structures quizzes it's very obvious that he genuinely cares about our grades and is a fair teacher (i heard another compsci teacher always made their students memorize methods' code; mr. rose would never do that). he gives tons of opportunities for extra credit on daily quizzes, gives blue moons fairly regularly, but don't ever ask him questions about your code; better to ask a classmate
Don't listen to the hate reviews-- those tend to be people that are always late or aren't specific enough when asking for help. He offers to let you come to his eighth periods, and explains things more elaborately there if you need help. He is definitely a fair teacher, one of my favorites actually, and all the things he is strict about make sense, like not being late to class. He really cares about his students.
He doesn't really help you with any labs that you have. He will answer any question of your's with another question. Make sure to be ready when he comes to check your labs, because he will skip you if you delay a second. Also his voice makes you want to sleep. OFF TO THE SALT MINES.
You need help with a lab? "Let me try this again". You have approximately 300 seconds for this KD. Is that a cellular device? Hand it over.
Mr. Rose is a fair teacher. His class is pretty easy as long as you do the required tasks and I got a over a 100% for all of the quarters. He gives a lot of extra credit. He makes occasional jokes that sometimes are funny, but he is not really helpful when it comes to questions, but he is ultimately FAIR. He acknowledges his mistakes and grades well. He's pretty strict about being on time to class, but once at Freshmen Computer Team he let 3 people in late and all he said was, "Wanna a cookie?"
He is a fine teacher for those who are raging, it is just that Mr. Rose doesn't really help much. Just sitting down and talking gets students nowhere. He knows what he is talking about, is nice, and is fairly lenient on grades.
Mr. Rose has been teaching for a long, long time. He must be doing something right with the county. However, he's no help at all if you go to him with a question; expect to hear "Let me try this again." Always be on your best behavior, because he is always looking for an opportunity to enforce rules.
He knows his stuff, but doesn't devote time to the students. Needs to actually lecture so that students can write their own programs and understand the material, not just copy of his program.
mr.rose seems very intimidating at first and doesn't explain very well. i personally hated comp sci so i sort of gave up on the class but still ended up with an A. he gives TONS i mean TONS of extra credit. one warning. NEVER BE LATE TO CLASS.
I was getting a pie out of my locker for pi day during math class. He heard me opening my locker, came into the hallway, and asked me which class I was skipping. Oh yeah, also can't teach. Most of the class ends up copying all the labs by the end of the year; normally I would consider this cheating but in this case in which the teacher gives no USEFUL help it is kind of necessary. Not the worst
Mr. Rose actually is a really good teacher. People always hate on him because of his sense of humor, and because they want him to baby them and he always tells them to go to the API. Which is actually really good of him. The API will become your best friend during the final project and if you continue on because the biggest way you learn more CS is from that. Just give him a chance, pay attention,
I took comp sci in the summer and had Mr. Rose. Honestly, he makes no sense and all his notes come directly from the packet. Just read the packet before he lectures and you'll be fine.
He knows his stuff, but is just kinda old and no one gets him cuz of that.
mr. rose is a sarcastic cruel person who delights in the ignorance of others to his subject. reading this review, he'd most likely enjoy it. doesn't seem to be accepting of others or their ideas, constantly puts you down and teaches only the bare minimum, expecting you to learn practiacally the entire class using your own devices.
Told me I was a terrible writer when I submitted an essay for geometry (2003) to which I'd devoted much effort. Now I'm published in the Huffington Post, Mr Rose. He was a mean, arbitrary teacher.
He's a very traditional person, so he can get really mad at you if you don't follow his rules. Also, he's really nice, and even though he doesn't show it at all times, he does have the best interest of his students at hand. He can't really teach, and if you don't get compsci, you're going to have a tough time. He won't help you at all unless you have a plan, so always make one before you ask for h
I don't understand why people thinks he's mean when he's actually very nice/caring for his students. True, he might get irked by some little things such as coming in late, but if you actually give him a chance and ask some questions, you'll be surprise. Oh, and awesome Frosh' Comp Team coach!!!
He is a mean person who is super strict and doesn't care for children.
Hates children. I have no idea why he became a teacher. Don't ever be late to class, and always strictly follow all class rules. He can be mean. That said, if you stay on his good side you'll be fine. He is also easier than Billington for APCS. Intro CS is easy in general so I wouldn't worry if you have him for that.
I really enjoyed Mr. Rose's class. Some people had a more difficult time, but it was mostly because they did not apply themselves and didn't try. He can be confusing at times, but really has the students' best interests in mind. Sort of quirky, but altogether an enjoyable class.
The class is easy, then again i already knew compsci. NEVER BE LATE TO CLASS. he doesnt teach much, teach yourself the material
he actually is nice but make sure you're on his good side. the class really isn't all that hard but he seems really intimidating. DONT EVER COME LATE.
I had him for APCS- not as bad as I thought. He's very traditional and not that great at explaining... Also plays favorites. Just do the labs and participate and laugh at his jokes.
as a person he is very strict and intimidating but his class wasn't too hard, as long as you did the labs and did well on the tests you got an A
he's a bit old-fashioned, but his class isn't as bad as you think. the tests are pretty easy, but he does grade labs a lot stricter than most other teachers. He WILL help you... if you have a plan for you lab
his tests are hard, but quizzes are easy. very unapproachable especially if you don't have a plan for the lab and you better not be late for class or do anything disruptive in the hallway by his classroom
Do not be late to class. Your initial grade is okay, but with extra credit, an A is easy to attain. He seems unapproachable but he IS helpful. Some don't like his teaching style. I thought he was hard to understand, but as soon i started catching onto his teaching style, I found it much easier and the class much more enjoyable.
his quizzes everyday are generally easy bcause they r open note. when in a bad mood beware. nicer to girls. at the end of each unit there are tons, TONS of extra credit. just do those. but dont be late to class
I had him for APCS. Be respectful at all times, follow every school rule to the letter and NEVER EVER be late, and you'll be okay. He treats the girls a little less harshly than he treats the boys in class. Not a good lecturer, but he is pretty helpful one on one. Just ask for help. From what I've heard, he is better for APCS than Billington, but terrible if you're in regular CS.
He's...a bad teacher overall. I really dislike his attitude towards everyone. I say hi, he grunts.
He really isn't a bad teacher. He doesn't teach you a lot in his lectures, but he'll help if you go see him. He gives EC. BE ON TIME, raise your hand, and don't interrupt him. Then you'll be fine
If you're good at compsci, he will LOVE you. I wasn't so lucky. His lectures are just basically reading the packet aloud. Doesn't help you with labs unless you have a plan for them.
Kind of scary at first. Don't be late to his class. However, if you show effort, he'll give you an A. He told me he'd give me an A after I sought help a lot and I heard other similar storeis.
He reads the packets to us. Overall boring class. He talks about his life way too much. He doesn't really like getting out of his shell and anything out of ordinary is bad...
Good teacher if you make allowances for his eccentricity. If you actually try on tests and turn in your labs, you'll do fine. A (usually) fair person.
had him for apcs (i'm very bad).he is a strange man.class exactly the same as billington's though.strict.but nice if you talk to him.easy if you're good at cs, hard otherwise
One of those people who enforces rules just for the sake of enforcing them. He terrorizes people over trivial transgressions. Hard-hearted, even more so as a teacher. Basically my worst class at TJ.
Get on his good side and he will be one of the nicest people ever. He's very funny if you can get his jokes.
Mr. Rose wastes half of period reading the text to you. If I had to take the course with just the text, and no teacher, I'd be no worse off. Wide range reviews because ppl somehow got on good side
I'm failing at his class, but I really can't hate him for it, I mean I don't try and he's still very patient and caring.
I Didn't Get On his Good Side, and I Payed Dearly. Listen To His Lectures; His Writing Is Ilegible. He Doesn't Know His Subject To Well .Is Not Good At Explaining Concepts.
Mr. Rose is not hard for CompSci as long as you try, use logic, and take notes. Open notebook quizzes almost every day. Don't get intimidated by him; he's actually a nice person. Follow his rules.
This is my third class with this teacher (Geometry, Intro to CS, and APCS). I suppose overall, he's a decent teacher. However, don't expect him to help you all the time. He's very patient, but has relatively strict rules. Just be sure to listen and you'll be fine. Easy teacher.
He's a great teacher if you are able to get on his good side. He's pretty helpful and humorous in his own way. Overall, despite the rumors, I think he's a good teacher.
Get on his good side the first week. Do your homework, and DONT BE LATE! Pay attention in class. Take good notes whenever he writes on the board- you need them for your quizzes. Pay attention to everything he says and you'll do well in his class. And whatever you do, DON'T ASK HIM TO USE THE RESTROOM- apparantly he told us the first day that there is a sign-out sheet for it, so dont ask. I learned that the hard way. Back to the "pay attention to what he says" bit again.
It takes a bit of time to understand exactly what he's trying to teach you, and a bit of time to get used to the fact that he counts time in seconds, but he is an excellent teacher, and definetly knows what he's doing.
If you don't try at all in his class, and don't pay attention, and don't ask questions when you need to, of course you'll hate him. For all those people with normal intelligence/ ability to not get teacher to explain same thing AGAIN, he rocks. He's really nice if you're not a slacker, and the class is REALLY EASY. Get him for compsci, because you learn stuff but its easy.
Hey hes not a bad teacher and he will actually help you after class! He is really nice if you try and do your work and not be lazy. He is actually really easy and if you do the work you'll get it. Doesn't descriminate at all.
i had him for the first half of the year. he really isnt as bad as everyone says! i went into his class expecting to hate it and left loving cs!
I hate the guy. very interested in the topic but cant keep me interested. I go ahead just to avoid his talks
Really confusing and scary sometimes. Doesn't teach well, but he's not that bad. He talks in seconds and is a killer for attendance.
not the best at explaining concepts but he does his best to help. if you work hard you can get on his good side. humorous in an eccentric way
He's kinda odd and confusing. It wasn't that hard but it was annoying when he was going too fast and about half the class was behind
He'll get good feedback if the person is smart. He'll get bad if the person is not smart. Why? FAVORITISM. I aced his class but com'on. Teach, not discriminate!
i knew a lot about computer science before i came in to this class so it was easy. Have to be on time or you get a zero. not too helpful either
I had Mr. Rose 8 years ago for Computer Science, and the fact that he passed our tests back in descending order still annoys me. That's just mean.
really nice if you try and ask lots of questions. hes also really undersantding about stuff. love his crazy tangents in the middle of class. great to imitate.
his handwriting made it so hard for me to learn anything in that class. i had people who already knew it or had different teachers teach me
Tuuurtle!! and GREAT shoes hehe. Not a bad teacher and very nice man.
he tends to be very strict about some things- you HAVE to be on time, and you can't eat (no water). as long as you do work and are respectful, it's an ok class.
he was a very nice teacher, and he really cared about his students. im glad i got him again.
He's a bit strange, but I've never received so much respect from you. He's very calm and understanding. Not too much work, you'll get an A if try.
Nice guy, and I learned a lot from his Geometry class. However, he often confused a lot of people when he answered questions.
The old turtle:his lectures are so boring. The only good thing was that I got my bio hw done. didnt learn a thing, bombed all KDs but managed an A?!?!
weird guy, try to make an effort of learning something in his geometry class, he'll like u. apparently his geom classes know the most compared tot he others
Mr. Rose is an easy teacher. Other than that I think he doesn't even know a thing about Java and Geometry. There is a reason why his 8th Period Lab is empty.
i had him last year for geometry as well as this year for comp sci. when he says time, he says it in seconds (so annoying) and he doesn't really know java.
He always thinks he is right. Whenever a student asks for help, he says to bring a plan. Like he has anything to do. I always see him playing games on his comp!
dont ever sign up for his lab 8th- ull notice its the only one not full.. for good reason
Unpopular, but not a bad teacher. Easy A, and I actually understood the material
Odd-Gives time in seconds. Has shoes that squeek so you can hear him coming.
Would've been better if he knew more Java, but explained better than the packets.
Easiest A -ever-. I was sad that I didn't break 100 ;_;. Pretty nice too!
Didn't teach, went off on random tangents. Glad I only had him for a quarter.
nice guy if you give him a chance, and great to imitate years after
I cannot begin to describe, with what fiery passion I hated comp sci
