Had him sophomore & senior year. He's a VERY intelligent man. Makes deep connections and stuff. Grades are based on essay. Not much discussion in class. It's basically him talking while everyone does something else. Try to listen to him once though, he makes very insightful comments. (Also, Be nice. He went to Stuy and has been teaching here since forever.) Really chill guy.
He digresses into meaningless topics and does not teach you how to improve in English. He is the worst English teacher I ever had. He doesn't have a grading system. He literally will give you any grade he feels like giving.
Mr. Gern was the only teacher at Stuy that managed to leave me with a deep impression. He met me during his free periods to improve my essays, consulted me about things, and was so enthusiastic about his work and his students. He showed me how to mechnically improve my writing and his class discussions were always so interesting and informative. The most excellent teacher in the English department.
He's super knowledgeable about English, is an easy grader, and is very lax about essays and class participation and all. Only problem I really had with him was the fact that a lot of the stuff he talked about really went nowhere, in my opinion. I often found it extremely frustrating (and boring) to listen to him monotonously talk about one specific line in a poem or sentence in a story for pretty much one whole period. And he spends WAY too much time on only one book/poem. Disappointing, really.
HE IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS STUFF. His topics are so interesting! We go into deep discussions about books in directions I would never go. He also really listens to his students and says he's always learning things. However, he doesn't really care what people do in class if they don't want to participate so a lot of kids do hw. His essay prompts are vague however and sometimes too quiet to understand. He's funny too! He created the no-plagiarism code that was the basis of the one now.
YES YES YES. Gern is the sort of person who should be teaching english. Just so full of literary knowledge. His Odyssey class was so enjoyable. He goes off into these deep cryptic orations about obscure literary passages. They're actually so interesting [if you manage to stay awake, some people just can't take it]. And he understands we're students and we have other classes and we're always tired and we oftentimes don't get things straight away. Very understanding and loved his class.
cutest old man u'll ever meet ! he's mad chill so u don't have to participate in class. sometimes he's boring but he can say some mindblowing things. he's also a very easy grader.
Mr. Gern is a pretty chill teacher. The class can be really interesting if students get involved, otherwise your just listening to a lecture.
i can't help but fall asleep in his class alot, but on the times i dont, i hear him say very thoughtful things. takes analysis to a whole new level. very relaxed:)
the wise, down-to-earth, and intersting (young) grandfather type teacher.
the wisest teacher i've ever had. he might seem boring at first, but if you listen, says the MOST mind blowing things. pretty nice and funny too. god i miss him.
He is really an English mastermind. He really is. He manages to make the most obscure connections between works of literature and bizarre themes, but it's really interesting at times. He's pretty unde
Without a doubt one of my best teachers in Stuyvesant thus far. Show competency in your papers and you will be rewarded. I just wish every teacher could just observe him. He taught in a way a lot of p
different kind of class. we move really slowly. we basically just sit there and talk about things that may not even be relevant to the book. very chill class. for papers, u need excellent grammar
A 3 for easiness only because I know of some people who have struggled in his class. If you write well (specifically have good grammar) he should not be a problem and overall he is brilliant/caring.
Gern serves the same functions as a textbook. Gives no guidance for assignments, yet assignment objectives are vague. Class discussions are mainly digressions. Has a hard time getting our attention.
He's pretty cool, i find his discussion really entertaining and he is really respectful and calm so we manage to have peaceful debates on topics. Also got an alarming amount of knowledge on things
very nice man. essays always on interesting topics. easy grader. doesnt care if you sleep in class.
Amazing! I had him for 2 yrs in a row; it's been 3 years since graduation, I still fondly remember his iliad/odyssey classes in college! also has a astonishing store of recondite knowledge.
I have Mr. Gern for sophomore English, and I have to say he is awesome. Even though I handed in EVERY essay ~2 weeks late, he graded me mostly on the quality. Great conversations, great teacher.
Mr. Gern has to be the smartest man I know. Everyone complains that he's boring but that's only because they don't want to listen to what he has to say. Much respect.
The greatest teacher I've ever had, no lie. He is open to just about any type of discussion. His grades are extremely fair. If you don't learn anything from him (academic or otherwise) I pity you.
Highly knowledgeable. Cares more about intelligence than delivery in essays. He really appreciates a student who can enlighten him in some way. If you didn't come away with anything, it's your fault.
His class was hard and boring, but he was a nice guy and tried to help his students.
Speaks at about .01 decibals (and not about anything too interesting I might add). Gives very little work becides occasional essays. Class discussions consist of him talking about 80% of the time.
His discussions are very strange and it seems he is talking to himself. Fell asleep in class at times, but at least stay awake. He only uses essay grades, so unless you're a great writer you will not do well in his class!!!
The closest thing I have to a college-level course (classical lit). Very interesting discussions. His essays have been more about a theme (scapegoating for example), rather than something specific from the books. Great class.
fell asleep in his class at least once a day, but didnt matter, he's GREAT
Truly an unusual man. The way his mind works is so strange. I have to admit, the class discussions in his class are the weirdest and most interesting i've ever had. ONLY essay grades, seriously.
nice guy, seemingly random assignments spark interesting class discussion. He's genuinely interested in hearing what you have to say. class was easy AND interesting, which is rare. I really want his class again next year
I honestly hated him. I really did. He taught nothing. I learned nothing. Graded pretty tough too. If you're not a fantastic writer, there's nothing you can really do.
Mr. Gern was the most influencial teacher I had at Stuy. He's class is hard, but you'll come away being better for it. I encourage everyone to take his class, once you get to college you'll be glad you did.
he is pure brilliance! he set the standards so high for an AP english class, now that im in college, even though eng classes are a breeze, its disappointing. really, take advantage of his class, his knowledge will amaze you.
def not an easy teacher and its hard to do well if you can't write...amazing knowledgable though..still, i haven't learned anything...
Although I know alot of people love him, I really can't stand him. He NEVER calls on me even though my hand is constantly up. I completely disagree with the way we are approaching the Iliad (and have no way to convey that).
he's cool and knows a lot of information but i do wish he was more clear-cut and all. he can be very ambiguous at times.
mr.gern was an AWESOME teacher, very wise and knowledgable
Very knowledgeable, I learned a lot of random, obscure facts in his class. He also gives an essay every week consecutively, but grades ez (and ur final grade is avg of ur essays)
I love him! He is a great teacher and he knows something about everything! Lol, his classes are so funny. Amazing man!
oh mr. Gern. Very much a poet. That should be enough.
Amazing man. Prepared me for college very well. Will always remember his class.
If i could have him for every class, i would. amazing teacher, teaches really amazing stuff, really cool guy, hes not that tough a grader, but he doesnt give 100s often
Hes so cool. He knows everything about his topic. He always tells you the more subtle information but so cool and so amazing.
if u listen in class, hes a pretty funny guy. a bit of a tough grader, but he doesn't mind that much when you hand in your papers late.
Prepared me for college-level writing and analytical thinking. If all teachers at Stuy were like him, it would be a truly great school.
Very hard teacher mainly because he would criticize my papers but then didn't really give me guidance in how to improve them. Still, he knew his stuff.
Not a teacher-- an EDUCATOR. One of the people that makes Stuyvesant so special.
what can i say? i fell asleep alot. hes very monotone. paper topics are very vague. you could hand in papers late and get a good grade. my grades= BAD
He is a teacher who demands a lot of his students, but in an AP class, you should expect that. He is so smart and so apt at teaching. Thank you Mr Gern
Nice guy. The way he teaches poetry is a little annoying--almost like solving a puzzle. Doesn't prepare you for the ap.
gives harsh grades..we accomplish very little in class
He frequently starts the class late and says, It's not whether we begin the class, it's whether we finish it. We once did four lines in one class.
Very laid back when I had him several years ago. Turned my thesis in two months late; got a top grade and accolades for it at graduation.
His freshman English class was one of the more challenging courses I've had to take at Stuyvesant. He is an excellent teacher, and did quite a bit to help my writing skills.
